DOOM NOV 05 - TOO EASY FOR MASTER WINNER
By Graham Potter | Saturday, November 7, 2009
Doomben, November 5, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 4m. 3yo Maiden Plate (C, G & E - Set Weights) - 1350m. Time: 1-20.42. 1 Master Winner; 2 Millenium Hawk; 3 King Capo.
The Lennie Wheeler trained Master Winner easily outgunned his rivals here winning with plenty in hand. The colt had put the writing on the wall in his previous start when only beaten into second placing by a head in his first attempt beyond 1200m.
The 1350m trip was again very much to his liking. Master winner took charge very early in the contest and raced untroubled all the way to the line where he scored by a comfortable two length margin to claim his first success in his sixth career start.
While the quality of the opposition was questionable, all you can do is win your race and Master Winner is now on the scoreboard.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Jockey Glen Colless: “We came out of the gates and we were going to try to take a sit ... but we were sort of going to be trapped a little bit deep, so, once they steadied I just slipped around and had a pretty easy time of it is front and then just dictated things from there.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Master Winner): 2.70 out to 3.00. Favourite (Snakesonaplane): 1.80 out to 2.50. Finished seventh.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Break The Ice (J. Bowditch) was slow to begin. Snakesonaplane (S. Katsidis) and Indigo Lad (L. Cassidy) over-raced in the middle stages. J. Bowditch, rider of Break The Ice, was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out right to the finish line.
When questioned regarding the poor performance of Snakesonaplane, S. Katsidis stated that he was not satisfied with the colt's breathing throughout the race and when leading approaching the 800m he surrendered that position to Master Winner (G. Colless) in an attempt to get Snakesonaplane to relax. Snakesonaplane then had a tendency to over-race after obtaining cover, and as a result was unable to finish the race off as expected. S. Katsidis recommended to connections that the blinkers and crossover noseband be removed from the gear of Snakesonaplane as he was of the view that the colt resents this gear.
A post-race veterinary examination of Snakesonaplane revealed it to be making a slightly abnormal respiratory sound and had bled from the off-side nostril. Trainer M. Thexton was advised that she must provide a veterinary clearance, along with the results of an endoscopic examination, and that the colt must gallop over 1000m to the stewards' satisfaction prior to racing again.
