WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, OCTOBER 23, 2021
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, October 21, 2021
This weekend we are back at Doomben with the track rated ‘soft’ and the rail is out in the 3 metres position for the entire circuit. The track may get worse as there is rain forecast in Brisbane. With that in mind it may be wise to consider runners who like wet ground.
The WS COX Plate is on – the feature race today – all eyes will be on Melbourne.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
A distance race to start us off here.
Honorable Spirit (2) and Irish Sequel (3) have been racing well and winning. I think it comes down to the 3-kilogram claim for Jaden Lloyd on Honorable Spirit, so I will stick with this runner who is trained by John Smerdon.
Irish Sequel (3) won last weekend and is on the quick back up for Chris Waller Racing. Jim Byrne retains the ride. He has won his past two starts impressively – if we get into the heavy range I would swap my tip.
Selections:
2 – Honorable Spirit 3 – Irish Sequel 6 – Nemingah 5 – Chocolatier
Race 2
The two-year-old runners line up here.
Exo Lady (3) won on debut for Desleigh Forster and looked good in doing so. Jim Byrne rides her again. Can see no reason why she cannot post another win here.
Honkytonk Diva (4) ran a good second on debut – trained by Kelly Schweida – Stephanie Thornton stays aboard.
There are big wraps on the filly trained by Kacy Fogden making her debut here – Flora Oasis with Ryan Maloney to ride – I thought the trial had some merit in it – drawn barrier 1 as well – maybe she can win and frank the early market support that has be shown here.
Selections:
3 – Exo Lady 4 – Honkytonk Diva 6 – Flora Oasis 5 – Spanish Angels
Race 3
The first leg of the early Quaddie on this ten race program.
Shamaton (11) was too good for them last time out for Gollan Racing – meets some of the same opposition better here at the weights. Looks a solid bet – Ryan Maloney will ride.
Zinagalong (3) raced in the same race as Shamaton (11) and was caught wide and got no luck. This weekend an important gear change with blinkers going on and a 3 kilogram claim for apprentice Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) should see him improve on a track where he has a good record – maybe we should overlook the effort at Eagle Farm – there are some horses that just resent that track surface.
Frozen In Time (4) is a Kris Lees Racing runner. Was unlucky at Toowoomba and has had a four week freshen up – will sprint well fresh – Andrew Mallyon to ride her again.
Winside (12) is a NSW runner trained by Mark Schmetzer. She has posted two wins from a spell and in some good times – looks like she can sprint – added bonus with Leah Kilner aboard – could cause an upset first time in the big smoke.
Selections:
11 – Shamaton 3 – Zinaglong 4 – Frozen In Time 12 – Winside Rough chance – (8) Lyrical Girl
Race 4
A race over 1350 metres.
Tony Gollan has had some good results in recent weeks and he saddles up Run For Glory (8) with Jim Byrne in the saddle. Dropping back from a mile to the 1350 metres – I think that he will be better suited here this weekend at this distance – will handle a soft track as well.
At Witz End (4) strung a hat trick of wins together last preparation – all at decent prices. This weekend looks like he will start favourite here – something new for him – Ryan Maloney will ride the gelding for Owen Glue. He has had a solid hit out on his home track at Grafton.
Catesby (5) never wins out of turn – he needs everything to go right in the race – but if he gets the right speed in the race, he could make a mess of these – I see Michael Hellyer gets back aboard this runner. He has a good strike rate on this gelding.
Prioritise (7) led them up last weekend and he got his own way in front. He will probably go forward again this weekend with KWT aboard and no weight on his back.
Selections: 8 – Run For Glory
4 – At Witz End 5 – Catesby 7 – Prioritise
Race 5
Three-year-old race over 1200 metres.
Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted train Birriecart (2) who has won both career starts – both times with Boris Thornton aboard – he keeps the ride here this weekend. They look like they will be very difficult to beat here despite the rise in class.
Bad Education (5) is a Robert Heathcote runner who is on a quick back up after winning impressively last weekend at the Sunshine Coast. Despite the $17 on offer I give him a good “educated” rough chance here.
Tony Gollan has two good chances as well – Tiger Heart (1) and Devastating (6).
Tiger Heart (1) I thought was disappointing first up from a spell when beaten at Eagle Farm – did he just not handle the track – that is the question? He has won here – so he could well come out and slay this field this weekend – Ryan Maloney will ride him.
The stable mate is Devastating (6) and Jim Byrne will ride. He broke through for his maiden victory a month ago at the Sunshine Coast – since then he has won a trial in good fashion.
Selections:
2 – Birriecart 5 – Bad Education 1 – Tiger Heart 6 – Devasting
Race 6
Will the Heathcote – Kilner juggernaut keep rolling on here with Rayjen (4)? Has won here and a placing. A solid recent barrier trial would suggest she is ready to go well here first up. The claim for Leah as well enhances her chances.
Invisible Tears (1) is trained on the Gold Coast by Gillian Heinrich. She is still a maiden but raced in Listed and Group races in her first preparation. I think that she could race well fresh and her recent barrier trial win on the home track would support this notion – Michael Cahill will ride.
Fetch (5) is a Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted runner. She resumed at Eagle Farm – I think she didn’t handle the track. Back at Doomben I think she is a different proposition – boom apprentice Jaden Lloyd remains aboard.
Selections:
4 – Rayjen 1 – Invisible Tears 5 – Fetch 6 – Putontheredlight
Race 7
First leg of the Quaddie is an open race over the 1615 metres. This is a strong field.
Green Jacket (6) is an Edmonds Racing runner. Last time out was a very good winner at this track with Jim Byrne aboard. A repeat of that effort would see him winning again. Jim Byrne is riding in superb form since the commencement of the new season – Cameron Partington keeps on getting him aboard some nice runners each weekend.
Enterprise Keren (9) won at Eagle Farm last time out with Jaden Lloyd aboard. This weekend Kyle Wilson Taylor claims the ride for trainer Mick Lakey. This mare has always shown ability – I am just just too confident of her running a solid mile. She has never won third up as well.
Deep Sceiva (8) drops back to the mile and has the claim for apprentice Leah Kilner. She led them up last time out over 1805 metres and dropped out noticeably. I think the drop back in distance and drop in weight will see her extremely competitive this weekend.
Montez (4) trained by Maryanne Brosnan – has Jaden Lloyd aboard and there has been some money for him since the markets have opened – keep your eye on the markets in case the money trail continues.
Nyami (7) is a Waller Racing runner. Steps up to a mile here this weekend – Jimmy Orman aboard. Keep safe. Money has come for the stable mate as well – So Taken (11) who finished second to Green Jacket (6) last time out – Ronnie Stewart rides this one.
Selections:
6 – Green Jacket 9 – Enterprise Keren 8 – Deep Sceiva 4 – Montez Rough chance – (7) Nyami & (11) So Taken
Race 8
First leg of the treble this weekend. This is a tough race – it may pay to play wide.
Rob Heathcote has a couple of runners here – they both have genuine chances. I like the longer priced one of them (surprise – surprise). I think that now Phantom Court (18) has made the field with several scratchings she looks well placed in this grade – drawn nicely and has apprentice Jaden Lloyd to ride. She can probably sit in behind the speed that is drawn around her and get a nice run and then put in an effort late.
The stable mate is Danezel (13) who has Leah Kilner aboard for the stable. She stormed home last time out to narrowly be beaten by Enterprise Keren (race 7 number 9). She has drawn terrible in barrier 15 – so she can probably let them go hard in front and flash late. Heathcote could quinella the race.
Jack The Lad (10) has drawn terrible as well in barrier 18. Jim Byrne rides for Chris Waller Racing – he ran a good third last start at Eagle Farm – prior to that won a midweek race at this track and distance.
Toujours Lamour (15) is a seven-year-old mare trained by Barry Baldwin – she is $26 and will have Michael Hellyer to ride. This mare loves the wet tracks – if the storms continue in the lead up to this meeting and track gets downgraded, she comes right into contention here. Plus, the pesky Hellyer has a habit of destroying my exotic bets – Quaddies and Trebles – so I had better not leave him out.
It would be remiss of me not to make mention of Billy Healey Racing’s runner – Dominarcher (7) – no chance for mine – that should get an appropriate message from him at some point!
Selections:
18 – Phantom Court 10 – Jack The Lad 13 – Danezel 15 – Toujours Lamour Rough chance – (7) Dominarcher
Race 9
Several early scratchings here.
Gollan Racing steps out here with Big Bad Bruce (2) who franked some good recent placings with a win last time out here over the same distance where jockey Stephanie Thornton found herself out in front and able to dominate the tempo of the race. I don’t think it really mattered to be honest – I think he could have raced in behind them and still got the chocolates. He does rise sharply in the weights this weekend for that win – but should be still competitive.
Sir Warwick (8) has posted three wins in a row now for trainer Jake Capewell. Last time out it was here at this track and distance midweek with Jim Byrne in the saddle. Why break up a winning formula – so they are back on a Saturday to attempt to frank that win here.
Neutron (12) has met some good support in the early markets and is trained by Kacy Fogden with Ryan Maloney in the saddle. Has a wonderful record here but is stepping up to Saturday grade.
Rebel Salute (3) – do I have to apologise this weekend as well? Poor Bryan & Daniel Guy – they still technically haven’t trained a Saturday winner in town – well maybe – they did dead-head – went to the steward’s room and got beaten there as well – but still a dead heat ‘winner’ last weekend – well done boys! They have kept winning jockey Kyle Wilson Taylor from last weekend aboard – this runner has never been out of a placing at Doomben in eight starts. Well, the WINNO mock is on here – he will run fourth this weekend – maybe beaten by a half neck for third!
Selections:
8 – Sir Warwick 2 – Big Bad Bruce 12 – Neutron 3 – Rebel Salute Rough chance – (6) Oriental Princess
Race 10
The last race of the day – oh my legs are aching already!
Let’s hope the favourite gets the win in the last – trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted and will be ridden by Jaden Lloyd – Contemptuous (2). He has won his last two starts – looks like he can post a hat trick here. Likes this 1200 metres at Doomben and looks well placed by the stable.
Gillian Heinrich trains at ex-Godolphin runner in Phaistos (1) who has won a trial since relocating to her Gold Coast yards. He does have a good first up record – but having to carry 64 kilograms – less 3 kilograms for apprentice KW, he may just struggle late with the weight. His form in NSW would suggest he should be competitive here.
One thing is for sure – I am hoping to see the two male apprentices go hard late at each the other if the race pans out that way – keep them straight boys – I want a fair fight!
Sir Rocket (10) is looking to post a hat trick of wins here for Michael Costa. Is well weighted and ideally drawn – Michael Cahill to ride. In each of his starts from a spell he has been smashed into favourite and has won each time. There has been some support here early for this gelding – he is weighted to get the job done.
Rucca (9), as I keep saying, if he ever puts it together on race day would destroy a field like this. It just depends on what five-year-old gelding turns up here this weekend – granted he is drawn barrier 15.
Boom Spender (3) was heavily backed last time out for Desleigh Forster – she trained a winning treble on that occasion with Jim Byrne riding them all. I think he goes better at Eagle Farm, however, do not overlook.
Selections:
2 – Contemptuous 1 – Phaistos 10 – Sir Rocket 9 – Ruuca Rough chance – (3) Boom Spender _____________________________________________________________________

WINNO V FLEMO
WINNO beat FLEMO last weekend – we still managed another 5 winners and some close seconds at massive odds! In a WINNO and HRO exclusive I hear that FLEMO is going to change camps in 2023 and follow the DOLPHINS and dump his useless BRONCOS! Maybe this is a precursor to becoming a NSW BLUE as well!
Be sure to check Facebook on Saturday morning for our updated information where I will post our selections and any late mail!
