DOOM NOV 05 - HALF-SISTER TO TYPHOON TRACY WINS ON DEBUT
By Graham Potter | Saturday, November 7, 2009
Doomben, November 5, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 4m. Maiden Handicap (Fillies And Mares) - 1020m. Time: 58.88. 1 Tracy's Choice; 2 Flinders City; 3 La Chance Finale.
Tracy’s Choice, a half-sister to the mighty Typhoon Tracy*, did enough to go home with a debut win here. Jockey Glen Colless produced the filly with a finely timed run over the final 200m to get the better of the game Flinders City to score going away by a half-length.
It was in essence an unspectacular victory, but an important one which was achieved in a no-nonsense matter. This run should bring her on and it seems certain Tracy’s Choice will attract more attention next time out then the luke-warm response she received from punters on this occasion.
*Typhoon Tracy, who won the Group 1 Myer Classic at Flemington by five lengths on October 31, is a seven-time winner from only ten starts. The four-year-old, who has already banked more than a $1 in prize-money, is by Red Ransom out of the Tracy’s Element, the mother of Tracy’s Choice. Tracy’s Choice was sired by Redoute’s Choice.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Michael Lakey: “We were a bit nervous. I haven’t done a lot with it. The owners bred it. She is a half-sister to Typhoon Tracy and Red Element. I think her mom was a champion South African mare.
“Yeah, I was just lucky enough to get the phone call. They said, ah ... you can have the Redoute’s Choice. I’ve been training for (owner) John (Hutchins) since I started training. Yeah, so he’s always had one or two in work with us whether we are pre-training them to go down south or not. I’d say this one will probably go down there ... but we won its Maiden anyway.”
Jockey Glen Colless: “Yeah she is a nice horse ... probably looking for a mile. Just her class got her through today.
“From the ten gate she sort of got over into a pretty good spot on the fence. Then she over-raced for a touch. Once I got her out about three wide and sort of tracked into the race she hit the line good and got the job done.”
PRICE FLUTUATIONS: Winner (Tracy’s Choice): 3.00 out to 4.20. Favourite (Alberton Park): 2.60 steady. Finished sixth.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: The start of this race was delayed when Twin Sisters broke through the barriers and galloped for a short distance before being restrained. Twin Sisters was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. Twin Sisters (J. Taylor) was slow to begin.
Abode (K. Sawyers) was hampered at the start by Flinders City (S. Katsidis), which shifted in. After passing the 900m, Abode was momentarily hampered by La Chance Finale (A. Spinks) which shifted in when laying in.
Nearing the 600m, Tracy’s Choice (G. Colless) improved up on to the heels of Alberton Park (M. Speers) and had to be steadied. Alberton Park (M. Speers) was held up when unable to obtain clear running rounding the home turn and for the entire home straight, and subsequently went to the line not fully tested by its rider
A post-race veterinary examination of Ocean Of Emotion, which weakened badly in the home straight revealed the filly to have a laceration to the off-foreleg.
G. Colless, rider of Tracy’s Choice, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that approaching the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when not fully clear of La Chance Finale (A. Spinks), which was taken in across the rightful running of Ocean Of Emotion (B. Stewart) which had to be checked and as a result Abode, which was following, was also checked. G. Colless was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 8 meetings, to commence at midnight, 7 November and and to expire at midnight 20 November 2009.
