WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, OCTOBER 30, 2021
By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 29, 2021
Eagle Farm this Saturday where the track is rated “good” and the rail is out 5.5 metres for the entire circuit. That sometimes means that horses on the speed do better and it may pay to watch the first few races to see if this factor will turn out to be correct – we do have ten races to think about!
Must be that time of the year as well - Melbourne Cup time! The anti-whip, anti horse racing fraternity has found some air and are running around and posting on social media – they make me sick – crawl back into your stalls or better still just GO AWAY!
I must give a shout out to the Queenslanders – Desleigh Forster and Jim Byrne who have taken the fight to NSW with Apache Chase (Rosehill race 7) in the Golden Eagle. They are looking to bring back some of the $7.35 million prizemoney on offer in this race. A staggering $4.1 million to the winner. They have had this race in mind for this gelding since he resumed this preparation – I hope that they can win the race – good luck guys!
Lots of small fields this weekend – so I will try and keep it brief.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
Tony Gollan runner Big Muskie (2) looks well placed here. Last time out was storming home late over 1400 metres. The mile looks like it is right up his alley here – Stephanie Thornton will ride.
It’s All Talk (3) was second up last time out for Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted. Just think the tempo of the race didn’t suit this filly and back to a small field and where it looks like there is some speed engaged, I expect Jaden Lloyd to probably stick to the rail early and ride for luck in the small field.
Brad Stewart will partner with Rochelle Pereira with Crack of Doom (1). Comes out of the same race as Big Muskie (2) and could improve here.
Selections:
2 – Big Muskie 3 – It’s All Talk 1 – Crack Of Doom 5 – Du Maurier
Race 2
A small field of seven runners to face the starter over 2131 metres.
Another nice chance for Gollan Racing with Youngblood (3) who has won his past two starts. Jimmy Orman retains the ride and despite the step up in distance rates a solid winner of this event.
I think there were some excuses for the Robert Heathcote runner Aswaat (4) last time out in the race won by Youngblood (3). Look for Taylor Marshall to ride this mare closer to the speed this weekend on the minimum weight and put it to the favourite late.
Hostage of War (2) is trained by Brenton Andrew and will have Billie-Rose Andrew riding in search of a hat trick of wins here this weekend. He did post a solid effort behind Honorable Spirit four starts ago – I think that if there is a leader’s bias at the track on Saturday you may see Billie-Rose riding hard and screaming at her horse to get him over the line. Either way it will be great to see her back in town riding a live chance.
Selections:
3 – Youngblood 4 – Aswaat 2 – Hostage Of War 5 – Southern Rock
Race 3
The first leg of the Early Quaddie as we have ten races today. The two-year-old runners front up here.
Les Ross has Mishani Persuasion (1) and Mishani Welfare (2) in the race. Mishani Persuasion (1) won here last time out and survived a protest – Brad Stewart to ride this weekend with Jackson “Wack” Morris to ride the stable mate Mishani Welfare (2).
There is some strong mail for the debutant from the Kacy Fodgen yard – Battledance (3). Jimmy Orman takes the sit on this colt. A recent trial winner on the Gold Coast – maybe he can lower the colours of the Les Ross stable. Let’s see who wins the BATTLE!
Zouson Boy (2) is trained by John Moore – first start here – may need the run, but keep your eyes on the markets. If the support comes for this son of Zoustar leading into the race it may be well advised to follow the money.
Selections:
1 – Mishani Persuasion 3 – Battledance 2 – Mishani Welfare 4 – Zouson Boy
Race 4
A 1000 metre sprint here.
Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted have Baylee Nothdurft riding Stellar Magic (1) here. She was sent out favourite last start and was hitting the line strongly late in a race that was run at a muddling speed and probably didn’t assist her. I think second-up here she will strip fitter and be difficult to hold out.
Refero (1), from Gollan Racing, won first up this preparation on the Sunshine Coast. A repeat of that effort will also see him hard to hold out – Stephanie Thornton picks up another nice ride for this stable.
Fierce Warrior (1) resumed on the Gold Coast on a heavy surface for Stuart Kendrick. He got the job done in strong fashion – he could be the upset chance here to lower the colours of these more favoured runners. He like to jump and lead and set the tempo in his races – that could just bring the other runners unstuck here – Kyle Wilson Taylor’s three-kilogram claim could be vital over the last 100 metres.
Selections:
1 – Stellar Magic 4 – Refero 2 – Fierce Warrior 8 – Pearls N Pimms Rough chances – (5) Princess Bojack & Finsceal (7)
Race 5
A Class 3 – 1200 metres – these can be tough races to find the winner!
So Clever (8) is the best runner in the race. He is trained by John Moore – but be warned he is quirky. IF he jumps from the barriers cleanly and races true, he wins this race. He has so much ability and was unlucky in several runs last preparation. I see they have elected to put a senior jockey on this weekend after his freshen up – Robbie Fradd will ride. His recent trial win on the Gold Coast would suggest he is going to be hard to beat.
The Big Goodbye (3) raced true last time here behind Acrobatic. Was making ground late and went down narrowly in a blanket finish. Heathcote Racing has put their stable apprentice on this weekend in Leah Kilner – her claim of 2 kilograms will assist him this weekend.
On the other hand, Maryann Brosnan will be seeking to upset these other runners with Brave Warrior (4) who has won his past two starts. I note that in the ownership is Nicola Lloyd – and her son Jaden Lloyd will ride him for the team. I am certain that there will be some celebrations if he can get a hat trick of wins this weekend, especially winning for his mum!
This is a very open race – despite the small field – may prove to be a knockout race for our multiples.
Selections:
8 – So Clever 3 – The Big Goodbye 4 – Brave Warrior 1 – Confidant Rough chance – (2) Dominarcher
Race 6
Last leg of the Early Quaddie – I hope we are still alive!
Another small field of only eight runners over 1825 metres.
The Toowoomba Cup winner Wapiti (1) drops back in distance. He does like this track – Taylor Marshall will ride him again for Gary Duncan. I am just concerned with the big weight he will have to carry here. There is no doubt the speed in this race will be genuine and this still could ensure he wins in such a small field.
Tears Of Love (5) is trained by Matt Kropp and Alex Patis rides the gelding this weekend. He won last time out at Warwick over 1500 metres and has a solid record at this track and distance. I would think that he does represent good value here in this open field.
Prioritise (3) is a Steve Tregea runner who led and left the field lamenting last time out here. Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) stays aboard this eight-year-old – probably will adopt the same tactics this weekend taking up the lead. Looks well placed and should be in the finish.
Milk Man (6) is a Matthew Smith runner who has a habit of hit and run missions to QLD. A last start winner over the mile at Warwick Farm and Jimmy Orman booked to ride – keep safe.
Selections:
5– Tears of Love 1 – Wapiti 3 – Prioritise 6 – Milk Man
Race 7
First leg of the Quaddie due to the ten races – a 1000 metres sprint.
Gollan Racing has a new runner in the stable, Black Magnum (4). The trial recently was not that flattering, however, this runner always goes well fresh, so I am banking on his sprinting well here fresh for the new stable. Stephanie Thornton will ride him. It is not an overly strong race – maybe he can get away with it.
Larry Cassidy (fresh off a winning double last weekend) is aboard the Barry Lockwood trained Hidden Hail (6). He does race well at Eagle Farm and looks the likely leader this weekend. He may just get away with some cheap sectionals and get the job done.
The David Murphy trained pair of Genzai The Wolf (1) and Archer’s Paradox (2) both are not without a serious chance. He has elected to claim with both runners allocated huge weights. Jaden Lloyd will ride Genzai The Wolf (1) whilst Alex Patis will partner Archer’s Paradox (2). If they go too hard in front here watch out for the WOLF to stalk his pray and get home!
Selections:
4 – Black Magnum 6 – Hidden Hail 1 – Genzai The Wolf 2 – Archer’s Paradox
Race 8
First leg of the treble. A race over 1600 metres.
This is very open – could be a rough result.
Last time out Vendidit (4) dead heated for Bryan & Daniel Guy with Kyle Wilson Taylor in the saddle. They threw in a protest and didn’t get that result either. On the flip side – they did get a Saturday winner in town after I had been putting the WINNO curse on them (all in jest). This gelding fronts up here this weekend over the mile – a slight step up in distance which I think will be to his benefit. The claim for KWT is important as well – he gets in well at the weights – but sorry boys I think you may just get pipped this weekend!
Cosmic Gossip (5) can mix her form. She put it all together last time out at the Sunshine Coast over the mile for trainer Stuart Kendrick. A jockey change with Leah Kilner being booked to ride – her 2-kilogram claim will be beneficial to this mare’s chances.
I like one here from the Daiki Chujo yards – Bahamut (6). A very good effort last time out in a Highway at Randwick where he worked home well to be beaten by 1.74 lengths. Nori Masuda will ride this weekend. I think this stallion will go better over longer distances, however, given his last start effort and sectionals – IF he can handle this Eagle Farm track, I think he may cause an upset. There is a genuine concern however, as he has had two goes here on this surface for failures!
The Dark (11) could be a dark chance – does like this track and may show something.
Selections:
6 – Bahamut 5 – Cosmic Gossip 4 – Vendidit 1 – Montez Rough chances – (7) Sienna’s Choice & (11) The Dark
Race 9
The second last race of the day over 1400.
The leader will be Barney’s Law (4) from the Mark Currie yards with Taylor Marshall to ride. He was run down late last time out by Ziemba (3) who he meets again here this weekend, better at the weights for that defeat.
Ziemba (3), trained by Robert Heathcote, does love this Eagle Farm surface and with three wins here from 4 starts it is obvious that he will be difficult to beat here despite the rise in the weights. Leah Kilner will offset the weight slightly with her claim. I think that he looks well placed again and the tempo of the race should suit.
Enterprise Prince (5), trained by Mick Lakey, was sent out favourite last start here when beaten by Ziemba (3). He had no luck in the straight was held up at a vital stage – had to shift out to get a run at them and finished off strongly. This weekend they have put Brad Stewart aboard. I am certain he will get this best out of this gelding and he poses a solid chance to post a victory here.
Jack The Lad (9) is trained by Chris Waller Racing – Ronnie Stewart will ride. Scratched last weekend for this race. Has had three weeks between runs and gets in on the minimum. I think there will be some solid support for this runner this weekend.
Champagne Aunty (7) is another Steve Tregea runner. She has never been out of the money in five starts here at Eagle Farm. Larry Cassidy will ride. She loves to race handy and despite coming back from 2000 metres in the Toowoomba Cup (her last start) to the shorter 1400 metres she has had a month to freshen up. She could cause an upset here!
Selections:
3 – Ziemba 5 – Enterprise Prince 9 – Jack The Lad 7 – Champagne Aunty Rough chance – (4) Barney’s Law
Race 10
The last race of the day over 1200 – a class 3 and the largest field of the day!
Sears Racing bring Better Than Best (2) second up here this weekend. KWT will ride for the stable and his three-kilogram claim will be crucial in my opinion. This mare has a tremendous second-up record and put in a wonderful effort over the Winter Carnival when run down late by Redoute’s Image. I think that effort holds her in good esteem here this weekend for a significant effort.
Gollan Racing finishes off the program with two strong chances as well – Pull Anchor (5) and Salateen (6). Pull Anchor was first-up last time out when a gallant second to stable mate Shamaton (who went down by an eye lash last weekend). I think the tempo of this race could suit her as well. She enjoys this Eagle Farm track – races well second up and is drawn perfectly in barrier 13 to race with cover early and then peel out wide and finish the race off strongly. Then there is the other factor – last race winner Stephanie Thornton will ride her!
The stablemate is Salateen (6) with Jimmy Orman to ride. Was sent out at prohibitive odds last time and was beaten. She was second up on that occasion, and I really could find no excuses for her. Maybe it was just a case of the second up blues – respect her this weekend.
If you want a roughie here to finish off the day – Barry Baldwin has Cherry Soda (8) looking to post back-to-back wins. She gets in nicely at the weights and is third up – Taylor Marshall to ride. If she wins, I am sure the “sodas” will be popping!
Selections:
5 – Pull Anchor 2 – Better Than Best 6 – Salateen 8 – Cherry Soda Rough chance - (9) Contessa ____________________________________________________________________ Jockey’s Challenge
Stephanie Thornton and Jimmy Orman have a nice book of rides. Maybe a slight edge to Stephanie to get the chocolates this weekend.
