WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, NOVEMBER 13, 2021
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, November 11, 2021
This weekend we are back at DOOMBEN where the track is rated “soft” and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit. The track may get worse as there is rain forecast in Brisbane. With that in mind it may be worth to consider runners who like wet ground.
Short and sweet this weekend – I am going on a summer holiday!
NB: Form assessed for a good 4 track. As these selections were made prior to final scratchings please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
A two-year-old race to start us off here.
Liked the effort off the Kacy Fogden runner Floral Oasis (4) here on debut behind Exo Lady. Michael Cahill will ride her here.
Saweetie (8) debuts here for the strong Tony Gollan stable. Magnificent effort in a recent trial – drawn on the rails – has been well supported since the markets have open. Stephanie Thornton will ride.
Heroic Son (1) won in good style on debut here for the Peter & Will Hulbert stables. Is well in with the claim for stable apprentice Adin Thompson.
Keep safe the Edward O’Rourke debutant – Kalea (7) to be ridden by Mark Du Plessis – has had two solid efforts in barrier trials – she could pop up at huge odds!
Selections:
4 – Floral Oasis 8 – Saweetie 1 – Heroic Son 7 – Kalea
Race 2
A distance race here. Not keen on the race – they seem to find a different winner each weekend.
The David Vandyke trainer Rapaport (7) looks the winner. Forget the run when a short-priced favourite two starts ago at Eagle Farm. He pulled up with mucus in his nostril – clearly something was wrong. Since then, he came out and won at Ipswich leading all the way. Look for Michael Cahill to give him the run of the race.
Rapaport will be challenged by the Gollan Racing pair of Youngblood (2) and Flensburg (6). Flensburg (6) has won his past two starts with Georgina Cartwright winning on him last time – she retains the ride here this weekend.
Jimmy Orman will partner Youngblood (2) again here – he will be better suited by the shorter distance.
Selections:
7 – Rapaport 6 – Flensburg 2 – Youngblood 5 – Southern Rock
Race 3
A mile race here.
Looks like a fair battle between two Gold Coast based stables – Chris Waller Racing and Edmonds Racing.
So Taken (6) raced home well last start when beaten by the stable mate Kubrick (1). Both are trained by Chris Waller. If there is a wet track, she will be well suited here – Mark Du Plessis has the ride.
The Edmonds Racing pair both look well placed. Green Jacket (3) likes this track and won here two starts ago – Brad Stewart will ride this weekend. Rule The World (2) has his second start for the stable and the mile looks ideal.
Selections:
6 – So Taken 3 – Green Jacket 1 – Kubrick 2 – Rule The World
Race 4
A race over 1600 metres.
I cannot have the favourite on top – Neutron (3), however, there were excuses last time out when caught wide. Given some better luck this weekend the Kacy Fodgen trained runner may improve – Ryan Maloney will ride.
Sienna’s Choice (12) is trained by Kelly Schweida Racing and was heavily backed last time out when narrowly beaten by The Dark (11). This weekend Jaden Lloyd has the ride – the claim certainly enhances her chances.
Scottish Mist (10) can mix her form – she does race well here at Doomben and will appreciate a wet track.
Selections: 12 – Sienna’s Choice 10 – Scottish Mist 3 – Neutron 11 – The Dark Rough chance – (7) Vendidit
Race 5
This race is over 1200 metres. Tony Gollan has two good chances here – Putontheredlight (10) and Inasec (11).
Putontheredlight (10) got no favours in the running last time out here and was unlucky. This weekend Ryan Maloney will ride and hopefully she will keep out of trouble and get a win on the board.
The stable-mate is Inasec (11) who will have Stephanie Thornton to ride. Has a heap of speed and will go fast from barrier three. Won on debut on the Sunshine Coast - the time was good - I expect her to race well here.
Me Me Lagarde (9) resumes here for Toby & Trent Edmonds. She won on debut at Ipswich and then went around in the Listed Bill Carter back in May and she was a touch unlucky. Two solid trials under her belt – the last trial she won well – Robbie Fradd to ride – she could upset the Gollan pair.
Manhood (8) from the Michael Costa yards has been well supported since markets opened firming from $11 to $4.80. The trials look average – he must have shown them something on the track. When this stable put their money on, they normally race well – Andrew Mallyon rides.
Selections:
10 – Putontheredlight 11 – Inasec 9 – Me Me Lagarde 2 – Wardaddy Rough chance – (8) Manhood
Race 6 First leg of the Quaddie this weekend. A good sprint race here over 1050 metres. Some nice types are resuming.
She Can Sing (9) probably will enjoy the speed on and I expect should sprint well and finish over the top of them late. Trained on the Gold Coast by Michael Costa she resumes here with a solid trial under her belt. Jimmy Orman takes the sit for the first time in her racing career.
Larry Cassidy and Chris Munce pair up with Palaispan (8) who had a great first up preparation with four wins last time in. She was also good in a recent barrier trial behind Shooting For Gold at Eagle Farm and looks like she has come back in good shape this time in – I expect her to sprint well.
Eloquently (4) is trained by Steve Tregea and Anthony Allen will ride – they are a formidable pair when they team up! This mare has a wonderful career record with 9 starts for 6 wins. She won a trial recently in Toowoomba – will like a wet track and looks well placed.
Lyrical Girl (6) won last time out beating Shamaton – that form was franked when her stable mate came out and won last weekend.
Selections:
9 – She Can Sing 8 – Palaispan 4 – Eloquently 6 – Lyrical Girl
Race 7
First leg of the treble this weekend. A massive field to face the starter.
Tough race here many chances.
Think I will go for some value with the Barry Baldwin trained Gave Us Up (13) to be ridden by Taylor Marshall. If the track doesn’t get into the heavy range, he should be competitive, and he races well third up and has drawn well here.
Salateen (14) led them up last start and was run down late in a dominant performance by Nicci Trix (10). I think with the weight change this weekend this mare may get back to her best form – she likes this track and Stephanie Thornton will ride.
Nicci Trix (10) won first up for the new trainer Lauren Abbott last time out. To be fair it was an exciting effort at Eagle Farm when Jaden Lloyd pressed the button and she surged away to win easily. They combine this weekend again – she handles wet tracks well and if she turns up with a performance like the one across the road, she will be hard to hold out here. Lauren has been having a great deal of success in recent weeks – maybe it will continue here.
Robert Heathcote and Leah Kilner combine with The Big Goodbye (2). A last start winner. Keep safe.
Many other chances – play wide, win heaps!
Selections:
13 – Gave Us Up 14 – Salateen 10 – Nicci Trix 2 – The Big Goodbye Rough chance – (3) Pull Anchor & (4) Kingscote
Race 8 Keith Noud – Listed
A Listed race here -great field assembled.
I like Tambo’s Mate (4) – speed will be on, and he will get a nice trail into the race. Tony Gollan will be looking to get the Listed Race in the bag. Ryan Maloney has the ride - looks well placed here.
Rex Lipp & Nick Hahn had their first Saturday Metro winner last weekend when Tycoon Evie won the last race. Can they get their second winner and their first Listed winner with Simply Fly (12) who will be ridden by Mark Du Plessis.
This gelding has had two starts from a spell and is stepping up to a suitable distance this weekend in a race where the speed will be on. If the rain comes his chances will be enhanced as he loves wet tracks. Either way he is a genuine chance here.
Wisdom of Water (10) had no luck in his Victorian campaign, so NSW trainer Annabel Neasham has sent him north to attempt to win some prizemoney. He has raced well in QLD previously and, as long as he has travelled up well, he will be flashing home late with Robbie Fradd in the saddle.
The Harrovian (2), who resumes here as well for Edmonds Racing, has proven form in this grade, track and distance. Had a great trial on his home track a few weeks ago – Brad Stewart to ride – a massive heart they will want to be strong to beat him here!
Selections:
4 – Tambos Mate 12 – Simply Fly 10 – Wisdom of Water 2 – The Harrovian Rough chance – (3) Baller
Race 9
The last race here – then time to head home and pack – Whitsundays here I come!
Academy (5) comes from the NSW stables of astute trainer Mark Newnham and will be ridden by Kyle Wilson Taylor. His preferred style of racing is to jump cleanly and roll along in front. He will need to get across early from barrier 12 – I just hope once he gets to the front that Kyle can put the brakes on and slow them up and turn this into a sprint home. If he can achieve that I think he will give this field a schooling!
Slow Hands (8) resumes her for Kelly Schweida Racing. He can race well fresh and with the genuine speed in the race it could set it up for him to storm home late with Brad Stewart in the saddle. I am certain that the $51 on offer will not be around come race day.
Constant Flight (2), trained by David Vandyke, is second up this weekend with Jaden Lloyd in the saddle. He resumed a month ago at Eagle Farm and, whilst his effort was solid, I just think that he will race better on the Doomben surface where he has a tremendous record. He also has an awesome second up record – 4 starts for 3 wins and a placing. This probably means that the $18 on offer will not last either – there is some serious value here in the last if you want to pot the favourite.
Let us now talk about the favourite. Morethannumberone (12) is from the Michael Costa stables on the Gold Coast and will have the services of Andrew Mallyon. Just a reminder that Jaden Lloyd seems to have the wood on him in recent weeks in close finishes (just saying!). This gelding has a strong record, but I just think he goes better second or third up. This weekend he resumes here and has been well supported - $3.90 into $2.20 - so the stable must be confident. They normally get the chocolates when they heavily back one of their runners. He had a solid trial at Ballina a fortnight ago – looked like he was going to the line with plenty in hand. I am just thinking that the other runners here may have his measure. He too, like some of the other runners I have mentioned, will be benefitted by the speed in the race.
Selections:
5 – Academy 2 – Constant Flight 12 – Morethannumberone 8 – Slow Hands Rough chances – (1) Indispensable & (6) Cruze _____________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
This is not an easy one. Stephanie Thornton, Mark Du Plessis, Jimmy Orman, Ryan Maloney and Jaden Lloyd all have some nice chances – maybe Ryan Maloney to just pip Stephanie Thornton.
