WINNO'S WINNERS: GOLD COAST, NOVEMBER 27, 2021
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, November 25, 2021
This weekend we are on the scenic Gold Coast where the track is rated “heavy” and he rail is in the true position for the entire track. With rain forecast for the rest of the week, we will be racing on a wet track – that’s if we get to race at all.
Earlier in the week Josh Fleming had his 50th birthday – doesn’t look a day older than 60 actually! Happy Birthday FLEMO – I hope you had a wonderful day. He was 37 – just got to keep him honest!
Brief this weekend – I hope we get to race.
NB: As these selections were made on the Thursday prior to the Saturday race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
A nice race to start off the day – for the two-year-old runners.
Annabel Neasham has a few runners here – Lady Laguna (6), a last start winner at Eagle Farm and a first starter Controlocracy (11). The first starter’s trial was very good at Warwick Farm on a soft track and she looked like she would be improved.
Local trainer Michael Costa has a debutant as well - Perfect Mission (12) who won a trial on a soft track – has drawn wide in barrier 12 and will be ridden by Andrew Mallyon.
The Kacy Fogden pair of Extramaarrty (3) and Prince of Marakesh (4) are well placed and have been performing well in trials – keep safe.
Heroic Son (1), who will be ridden again by Adin Thompson, is proven with a win and a second in second career starts – looks like the Hulbert racing trained colt will handle wet tracks and is well placed here.
Tough way to start the day with many of these racing for the first time and on a heavy track.
Selections:
6 – Lady Laguna 11 – Controlocracy 12 – Perfect Mission 3 – Extremaarty Rough chance – (1) Heroic Son & (4) Prince of Marakesh
Race 2
The distance race over 2200 metres on a heavy track - some of these will sleep well tonight!
Nemingah (3) is trained by Edward O’Rourke and has solid form on soft tracks. Will have Jim Byrne aboard. His last start effort at Rosehill was solid in the Country Classic and I think that the extra distance will suit here.
Youngblood (1) and Shebringzit (4) are Gollan Racing runners. Both have been racing well and look well placed.
Hamilton Place (10) is a last start winner here on a heavy track over 3200 metres – trained by Nicole Luke and will be ridden by Anthony Allen. He loves wet tracks and proved that he could keep going last time out over the lengthy distance – maybe that effort and being down on the minimum weight could see him win again.
Not a race I am keen on.
Selections:
3 – Nemingah 1 – Youngblood 10 – Hamilton Place 4 – Shebringzit Rough chance – (5) Populist
Race 3
Les Kelly trains Becandleni (14) on the track. She won two in a row here prior to racing at Eagle Farm when sent out as favourite and beaten by Continuation (8). Meets that runner better at the weights. does has superb heavy track form and loves her home track. Michael Cahill will ride here.
Continuation (8) won at Eagle Farm last time out over 1840 metres for the Kris Lees Racing yards with Andrew Mallyon aboard. They combine here again in a race that he can probably lead or take a sit and then power away late. He is only third up this preparation and does have reasonable form on wet tracks.
John Moore has a last start winner at this track and distance going around – Dear Sibling (15) with Travis Wolfgram to ride. This gelding is lightly raced and has some notable wet weather form. Down on the minimum, he has drawn awkward in barrier 15 but should be able to settle midfield and work late into the race.
Stuck With You (7) could show up here as well – recent good efforts are noted – trained by Matthew Dunn Racing and will have Luke Dittman aboard who does ride the Gold Coast track very well.
Selections:
14 – Becandleni 8 – Continuation 15– Dear Sibling 7 – Stuck With You Rough chance – (6) Snippetspeed & (13) Jack The Lad
Race 4
A small field face the starter. This time a sprint over 1300 metres.
Les Kelly has Minto’s Paradise looking to post three consecutive wins here on her local track. Is undefeated on heavy tracks - 2 starts for 2 wins - has “King Callow” riding again and looks ideally placed.
Wardaddy (6) will lead them up – if they have problems making ground on this bog track, he may be able to dominate in front. Last time out at Doomben he led and was run down in the shadows of the post. He is trained by Kris Lees and Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) will ride this weekend. His claim could prove vital here in the final 100 metres of the race.
Lime Soda (7) is trained on the track by Edmonds Racing – I think that they will be having a “few sodas” if she can win second up here after a solid effort when she resumed at Ipswich. Has won on soft surfaces. Robbie Fradd to ride.
I think it is a nice trifecta (2,6,7)!
Selections:
2 – Mintos Paradise 6 – Wardaddy 7 – Lime Soda 3 – Why We Drink
Race 5
Tough race – play carefully – Class 3 over 1200 metres.
Les Kelly has another strong chance resuming here – Tamilaide (5) who won the Grafton Guineas back in July. Ben Thompson will ride this gelding who has never finished out of the money in seven career starts. He has wins on both soft and heavy tracks and is undefeated on heavy tracks with 2 starts for 2 wins. Has drawn well – ticks a few boxes. I think that he is some ability and will be hard to beat here this weekend.
Stormy Rock (8), trained by Matthew Dunn, has had one run under his belt and is second up here with Jim Byrne to ride. He has performed well on wet tracks and I just think he maybe ridden handy and close to the speed from barrier 3 this weekend. If they are leading and the others are not making ground late, he could just sneak a break in the straight and hold out Tamilaide (5). He is nice each way odds at $21 as well.
Mass Destruction (2), trained by Tony Gollan, is resuming as well and is a class runner in a Class 3 race – if he can handle the wet track, I am certain that he will make his presence felt late – Ryan Maloney to ride.
Kris Lees and Andrew Mallyon combine with Virtuous Miss (15) who has won her past two starts emphatically. She is down in the weights and faces her biggest challenge to date, but must be kept safe.
Cherry Soda, trained by Barry Baldwin, is a mare that may just cause an upset on this wet track. Will be ridden in behind the speed – three pairs back - with Taylor Marshall to ride.
Selections:
8 – Stormy Rock 5 – Tamilaide 2 – Mass Destruction 15 – Virtuous Miss Rough chance – (13) Cherry Soda
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie this weekend. A Class 6 race over 1400 metres.
Tumbler Ridge (11) resumed with a massive weight and stormed home behind Tycoon Evie three weeks ago. The effort was good, and he drops in weight here. Boris Thornton will ride him this weekend and I am prepared to gamble at $19 that he could get away with this race second up. He hasn’t been successful on a heavy track, however, he has performed admirably on soft surfaces.
Joy Too All (14) is a David Vandyke mare who seems to have some ability. Six starts – 4 wins and 1 second and has won 4 from 4 on soft surfaces – this would suggest that she will handle the heavy track. Sam Collett has been booked to ride this mare for the first time – she has had some solid support since the markets opened.
Morethannumberone (10) is trained on the track by Michael Costa and Andrew Mallyon will be in the saddle. Was sent out a very short-priced favourite when resuming at Doomben and, to be fair, looked like he needed the run when he ran a solid third. Second up on his home track where he is undefeated, I can see why the punters have come for this runner since the markets have opened.
Getyourgreyon (5) is the stable mate and likes heavy surfaces – is $51 and Jag Guthmann-Chester will ride – could be a major upset in this field.
Kubrick (6) has found a new lease on life winning his past two starts over 1600 metres. Jimmy Orman remains in the saddle for this Chris Waller Racing runner. The wet track may be a drama – has won on soft going but he is certainly fit enough to get through the going – his efforts over the mile have been very strong in the concluding stages and this could hold him in good stead here.
There are many other chances in the race – Slow Hands (8) loves the wet tracks.
The Edmonds Racing runner Walking Flying (9), who resumes here, has won 2 from 2 on heavy tracks. She has some very good efforts last time in and maybe could be storming home late here with Ben Thompson to ride.
Selections:
11 – Tumbler Ridge 14 – Joy Too All 10 – Morethannumberone 6 – Kubrick Rough chance – (5) Getyourgreyon – (8) Slow Hands – (9) Waking Flying – (15) So Taken
Race 7 SKY RACING TATTERSALL’S RECOGNITION STAKES
The feature race on the program over 1400 metres.
We do have the 2019 winner Tambo’s Mate (5) going around here. Trained by Tony Gollan and to be ridden by Ryan Maloney, his last start win at Doomben over 1200 metres in the Keith Noud (Listed) was very good. He does meet some of his rivals a little worse for that effort at the weights. I keep coming back to his heavy and soft track from – four starts on both surfaces and he has never been beaten on a wet track!
Niccanova (2) has a tremendous record on slow and heavy surfaces. Trained by Steve Tregea and with Jimmy Orman to ride, he worked home nicely behind Tambo’s Mate (5) when resuming and was beaten only 1.85 lengths. He hasn’t won in 29 weeks – but this race looks a nice one for him to post a win.
The Harrovian (3) resumes here as well for Edmonds Racing and will be ridden by Noel Callow. He raced in Group races last preparation and looks well placed here on his home track. Two solid trials as well would make me believe that he is ready for a bold showing first up. The stands will roar if he can get the job done first up.
Barney’s Law (11) has drawn well – will be the leader here. No doubt this is his favourite distance and if he gets his own way in front he does rate well here at 54 kilograms with Taylor Marshall in the saddle. One thing for sure is that Taylor should not come back to scale with mud splattered all over him if he gets out in front and keeps on going! One slight concern is his history on yielding surfaces. Could be a slight drama. Still a great each way chance knowing he will be out in front for a long, long way with no weight on his back.
Selections:
5 – Tambo’s Mate 2 – Niccanova 3 – The Harrovian 11 – Barney’s Law Rough chance – (6) Silvera
Race 8
This race has drawn a massive field – the Eureka Stud Fillies and Mares over 1200 metres.
Kisukano (2) loves this track and loves the mud – trained in Toowoomba by Michael Nolan and Larry Cassidy will ride her here this weekend. She has drawn well in barrier 3 and resumed over 1000 metres last start that was unsuitable for her. I think that second up here she is a wonderful each way gamble at $11.
Tycoon Evie (6) is another runner from Toowoomba trained by Nick Hahn & Rex Lipp. She won emphatically last time out at Eagle Farm. I am not too certain whether a true heavy track will assist her here this weekend, but she was strong in that last win and seems to be getting better with every run. Mark Du Plessis keeps the ride.
The top weight Wandabaa (1) just loves soft tracks. Her effort in The Hunter at Newcastle last time out was great when she made ground late to only go down just over a length. She is coming off a two-week break and Kris Lees would be looking to win this feature race after just going down in his hometown race last time out. Andrew Mallyon yet again has a nice ride here – he could have a great day in the saddle!
Miami Fleiss (7) is one of Gollan Racing’s runners. She resumes here after a ten week let up. She does thrive on this track and has solid wet form to her credit. Stephanie Thornton has had one ride for one win on this mare. Can she make it 2 from 2 and keep that 100% winning record?
Fleet Dove (14) resumes her for Kelly Schweida Racing and Sam Collett will ride her for the first time. This mare always races well fresh and loves wet tracks. In fact, the wetter the better! I think that at $31 she represents great each way value and could put some huge value in the exotics and Trebles and Quaddies! She has always shown some ability in all her preparations and last time in she raced against some nice types finishing just behind them at Listed level. I think that first up here on the soft surface from barrier 7 she wins the race!
Palaisipan (19) from Chris Munce Racing was unlucky first up for mine at Doomben. She normally likes to lead and set the tempo, however, there was some speed drawn inside of her – they pushed up – she got caught a little wide and worked home late. Maybe she also may have found the 1050 metres first up a little too short for her. Second up here over the 1200 metres look for a dramatic improvement. (Note she is dual nominated for race 9 as well)
Selections:
14 – Fleet Dove 2 – Kisukano 1 - Wandabaa 19 – Palaisipan Rough chances – (6) Tycoon Evie & (7) Miami Fleiss
Race 9
The last race – on a massive day of racing – let us hope we get to the last race and the rain stays away!
This is a tough way to end the day as well – multiple chances here.
Palaisipan (12) is a dual entry – see comment in race 8. . Chris Munce also trains Centrefire (8) who will be ridden by Michael Cahill here. She has been up a while but just her fitness and previous efforts at the track would suggest that you should consider her here.
So Clever (21), trained by John Moore on the track, goes down in weight and senior jockey Robbie Fradd goes on him this weekend … and an important gear change with the blinkers coming off and the winkers going on could see a major form reversal. Has had two very good trials and IF he jumps cleanly from the barriers from barrier 3, could get out and lead or alternatively sit in behind the speed and let down late – he is on his home track and I think can get the job done.
Tony Gollan has two last start winners in Ingear (10) and Salateen (16) engaged here as well.
Ingear (10) has drawn barrier 1 and will ping the gates and go forward – just not too sure how she will handle a heavy track – Ryan Maloney will ride.
On the other hand, Salateen (16) has handled slow going in the past. She was very good winning last time out at Doomben and, given the speed in the race, I expect Stephanie Thornton to ride her the same way and come hard at them late.
Rollinwiththeflow (17) has solid form on wet tracks. Trained by Tom Button and will be ridden by Boris Thornton. This gelding is third up and has won third up previously. His recent efforts would suggest that he is ready to show something here this weekend – huge odds as well at $51.
Last weekend we saw Stephanie Thornton beaten in the final stride by her partner Ben Thompson at the Sunshine Coast – (I do believe that Ben did pay for dinner). But this weekend could it be her brother Boris doing the same to her here at the Gold Coast? Stay tuned!
Rucca (7) was scratched from an earlier race for this one. Trained on the track by Toby & Trent Edmonds, with a strong liking for wet tracks he could upset this lot here. He does have barrier 16 to contend with but I think that he races better when he has solid speed on up front (which he does here) and can storm home late.
Selections:
12 – Palaisipan 19 – So Clever 16 – Salateen 17 – Rollinwiththeflow Rough chance – (7) Rucca & (10) Ingear ___________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
It looks a tough day, and it will all depend on what horses end up taking their places in the fields on this wet track. However, Andrew Mallyon, Jimmy Orman and Jim Byrne all have some nice rides. Maybe something on both Andrew and Jimmy Orman may see you get a nice result.
