WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, DECEMBER 4, 2021
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, December 2, 2021
This weekend we are at Doomben– a massive ten races are set down for decision with he track rated “heavy”. The rail is in out 2.5 metres for the entire track.
I hope we get to race.
NB: As these selections were made on the Thursday prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
A nice race to start off the day – for the two-year-old runners.
Capital Tower (1) won on debut here over 1110 metres on a soft track. Looked a nice effort for the Gollan Racing colt. Will be ridden again this weekend by Jimmy Orman.
Fearless Knight (3) is a Kacy Fogden runner who debuted at Sunshine Coast – ran on strong late and looked like he would appreciate further. He gets 1200 metres this weekend – Ryan Maloney retains the ride.
Burnish Gold (5) won last weekend for Rex Lipp & Nick Hahn on a bog heavy track at Ipswich. She is proven on heavy ground – Jim Byrne will ride.
Russian Warrior (11) has won a trial on the Gold Coast and debuts here for jockey/trainer Allan Chau. Michael Cahill will ride her – she has been well supported since the markets have opened – keep safe.
Selections:
1 – Capital Tower 3 – Fearless Knight 11– Russian Warrior 5 – Burnish Gold Rough chance – (2) Mishani Mental
Race 2 – Country Cups Challenge Final
The Final over 1600 metres.
Not a fan of this race – the form is hard to line up.
I am just going to have a throw at the stumps and say that Hi Henry (12) will appreciate the wet track – trained by Kristie Clark-Peoples and has Brad Stewart on board. I think drawn barrier 1 will enhance his chances.
Kedleston (16) is trained by Todd Austin and Ben Thompson will ride. He won last time out at Longreach – not sure how he will go on a wet track.
Miss Builtz (17) is trained by David Reynolds and is an emergency. She has drawn wide and will be ridden by Sam Collett. She is proven on soft ground and, despite drawn wide in barrier 17, I think she could run well here.
Ammoudi Bay (2) is trained by Olivia Cairns, and she does seem to get them right for these races. Justin Stanley partners with with this gelding – he has won 5 out of 10 on soft tracks – could be a good chance.
Selections:
12 – Hi Henry 16 – Kedleston 17 – Miss Builtz 2 – Ammoudi Bay Rough chance – (4) Doom
Race 3
A 2000 metre race here.
Caboche (1) was wonderful last time out leading and winning comfortably for Chris Waller Racing. Luke Dittman retains the ride here. He has not got any wet track form – has got a huge weight - this could be a drama.
Sergeant Silva (2) is a Robert Heathcote runner and does like this distance. Limited race form on wet tracks but has raced well in trials on damp tracks – I am just thinking this is his pet distance and with Jimmy Orman aboard he will be urging him late with his strong riding style – he represents great value at $16.
Deep Tempest (5) is trained by David Vandyke and Brad Stewart will ride. Last time out was beaten by Caboche (1), however, meets him better at the weights here. Again, limited wet weather form for this runner.
Ashgrove (3) won his maiden here last time out. Trained by Tony Gollan and he will be ridden by Ryan Maloney – a lethal partnership – must be considered.
It’s All Talk (4) I think will be better suited back here at Doomben – the mile looks right up his alley and Ben Thompson will ride.
Selections:
1 – Caboche 2 – Sergeant Silva 5– Deep Tempest 3 – Ashgrove Rough chance – (4) It’s All Talk
Race 4 Country Stampede Final
The Final - over 1110 metres.
Tough race here again with runners from all around the state.
Patented (9) is the way I have gone. Trained by Pat Webster and Gary Geran will ride. Does have solid wet track form and the win at Roma last time out would suggest that he will be right in this race. Has drawn a little wide – but I think there is some solid speed in the race and, if he doesn’t get caught wide, he will be very competitive.
Wall Street Tycoon (10) I is trained by Todd Austin – he could win both feature Country races! He has won his past five starts and looks like he will appreciate barrier 3 and be up close on the speed. Jim Byrne rides and the horse has won on a soft track previously.
Viceman (12) is a Steven Thomas trained runner and will be ridden by the up-and-coming impressive apprentice Montana Philpot. She won the Kilcoy Christmas Cup last weekend – she rode the winner to perfection and given some luck here could nail another feature race this weekend. She was a pleasure to meet last weekend!
Piracy (2) is trained by Sears Racing – will be ridden by Ryan Maloney – has some soft track form – huge weight but must be kept safe.
Selections:
9 – Patented 10 – Wall Street Tycoon 12 – Viceman 2 – Piracy
Race 5 Winning Rupert Plate
Tough race – play carefully – over 1200 metres.
Les Kelly has Minto’s Paradise (3) who is looking to post three consecutive wins after winning his last two on the Gold Coast. Is undefeated on heavy tracks - 2 starts for 2 wins. Has Sam Collett to ride and looks ideally placed.
Wardaddy (6) will lead them up – if they have problems making ground if it is a bog track, he may be able to dominate in front. Last time out at Doomben he led and was run down in the shadows of the post. He is trained by Kris Lees and Andrew Mallyon will ride this weekend.
Tony Gollan trains Tiger Heart (1) who has been solid in his two efforts from a spell running placings in each of them. Drawn well and does like wet tracks.
Far Too Easy (2) won when resuming for Murwillumbah trainer David McColm and will be ridden here this week by Brad Stewart. He has won two races on soft surfaces and should appreciate the wet track.
Jackson On Time (10) is trained by Scott Morrisey and he does have a high opinion of this gelding. Despite still being a maiden, he has had plenty of time to mature. Has had two nice trials and does like wet tracks – Jim Byrne has been booked to ride – he has been backed since markets have opened – currently $13 – could be a blow out chance.
Selections:
6 – Wardaddy 1 – Tiger Heart 3 – Mintos Paradise 2 – Far Too Easy Rough chance – (10) Jackson On Time
Race 6
Wapiti (3) loves wet tracks – superb win last time out when defeating Ligulate (1). Meets him worse at the weights, however, the wet track should see him go well again – Taylor Marshall will ride for Gary Duncan.
Ligulate (1) flashed home last start – trained by Cody Morgan and Andrew Mallyon will ride again. Has a great record at Doomben – just some worry about the huge weight and a heavy track at the end of 2000 metres.
Chris Waller trains So You Win (2) – Jimmy Orman will ride. Does enjoy soft surfaces and does race well at this distance. Third up this weekend I expect he will be difficult to beat.
Stuck With You (11) likes this distance and will appreciate the wet surface – Ronnie Stewart will ride.
Selections:
3 – Wapiti 2 – So You Win 1 – Ligulate 11 – Stuck With You Rough chance – (10) Green Jacket
Race 7 SKY RACING TATTERSALL’S RECOGNITION STAKES
One of the feature races on the program today over 1350 metres and the first leg of the Quaddie.
We do have the 2019 winner – Tambo’s Mate (5) going around here. Trained by Tony Gollan and to be ridden by Ryan Maloney his last win at Doomben over 1200 metres in the Keith Noud (Listed) was very good. He does meet some of his rivals a little worse for that effort at the weights. I keep coming back to his heavy and soft track from – 4 starts on both surfaces and he has never been beaten on a wet track! He did go to Rosehill last weekend and was sent out favourite over 1100 metres – too short for him at this stage of his preparation. As long as he has travelled well, he will be ready to go here this weekend.
Niccanova (2) has a tremendous record on slow and heavy surfaces. Trained by Steve Tregea and with Jimmy Orman to ride, he worked home nicely behind Tambo’s Mate (5) when resuming and was beaten only 1.85 lengths. He hasn’t won in 29 weeks – but this race looks a nice one for him to post a win.
The Harrovian (3) resumes here as well for Edmonds Racing and will be ridden by Noel Callow. He raced in Group races last preparation and looks well placed here. Two solid trials as well would make me believe that he is ready for a bold showing first up. The stands will roar if he can get the job done first up here.
Barney’s Law (11) has drawn well – will be the leader here. No doubt this is his favourite distance and if he gets his own way in front and does rate well here at 54 kilograms with Taylor Marshall in the saddle, he will have his chance. One thing for sure is that Taylor should not come back to scale with mud splattered all over him if he gets out in front and keeps on going! One slight concern is his history on yielding surfaces. Could be a slight drama. Still a great each way chance knowing he will be out in front for a long, long way way.
Morethannumberone (12) is trained on the Gold Coast by Michael Costa and Ben Thompson will be in the saddle. Was sent out a very short-priced favourite when resuming at Doomben and, to be fair, looked like he needed the run when he ran a solid third. Second up on a wet track, I can see why the punters have come for this runner since the markets have opened.
Selections:
5 – Tambo’s Mate 2 – Niccanova 3 – The Harrovian 12 – Morethannumberone Rough chance – (11) Barney’s Law
Race 8 Eureka Stud Fillies and Mares
First leg of the treble this weekend.
This race has drawn a massive field – the Eureka Stud Fillies and Mares over 1200 metres.
Kisukano (3) loves this track and loves the mud – trained in Toowoomba by Michael Nolan and Larry Cassidy will ride her here this weekend. She has drawn poorly in barrier 16 and resumed over 1000 metres last start that was unsuitable for her. I think that second up here she is a wonderful each way gamble at $15.
Tycoon Evie (6) is another runner from Toowoomba trained by Nick Hahn & Rex Lipp. She won emphatically last time out at Eagle Farm – I am not too certain whether a true heavy track will assist her here this weekend – but she was strong in that last win and seems to be getting better with every run. Mark Du Plessis keeps the ride.
The top weight Wandabaa (2) just loves soft tracks. Her effort in The Hunter at Newcastle last time out was great when she made ground late to only go down just over 1 length. She is coming off a two-week break and Kris Lees would be looking to win this feature race after just going down in his hometown race last time out. Andrew Mallyon yet again has a nice ride here – he could have a great day in the saddle!
Miami Fleiss (7) is one of Gollan Racing’s runners. She resumes here after a short ten week let up. She does thrive on this track and has solid wet form to her credit. Stephanie Thornton has had one ride for one win on this mare. Can she make it 2 from 2 and keep that 100% winning record?
Wonderful Riri (9), trained by Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted, is second up here this weekend. Has drawn terrible in barrier 18 – however, is undefeated in both starts here at Doomben and does like wet tracks. I think with the extra week after not racing last weekend at the Gold Coast she may be ready to upset them. Massive price as well with $31 on offer. Ben Thompson will ride her.
Fleet Dove (14) resumes her for Kelly Schweida Racing and Sam Collett will ride her for the first time. This mare always races well fresh and loves wet tracks. In fact, the wetter the better! I think that at $41 she represents great each way value and could put some huge value in the exotics and Trebles and Quaddies! She has always shown some ability in all her preparations and last time in she raced against some nice types finishing just behind them at Listed level. I think that first up here on the soft surface from barrier 7 she wins the race!
Palaisipan (20) from Chris Munce Racing was unlucky first up for mine at Doomben. She normally likes to lead and set the tempo, however, there was some speed drawn inside of her – they pushed up – she got caught a little wide and worked home late. Maybe she also may have found the 1050 metres first up a little too short for her. Second up here over the 1200 metres look for a dramatic improvement. (Note she is dual nominated for race 9 as well)
Selections:
14 – Fleet Dove 9 – Wonderful Riri 3 – Kisukano 2 - Wandabaa Rough chances – (6) Tycoon Evie & (7) Miami Fleiss & & (11) Eloquently & (20) Palaisipan
Race 9 TAB GEORGE MOORE STAKES
The feature race on the program today over 1200 metres.
Weona Smartone (11) resumes here this weekend – his toughest task to date. This impressive son of Shamexpress is trained by David Vandyke and he has been placing well in his racing career with an impeccable career record of six wins from seven starts. Ben Thompson gets to ride him in a race for the first time – he did partner him at a Sunshine Coast in a recent barrier trial.
Hard Empire (3) resumes here for Toby Edmonds – some solid trials under his belt and despite being an eight-year-old he loves wet tracks and races well fresh. Ryan Maloney will ride - $26 good value for the trifectas. With some ridiculous speed engaged here he will be finishing strong on the line as the judge calls a halt to the race.
Zoustyle (5) won first up – I may add very impressively as well. This Gollan Racing runner could be set for a wonderful Summer Series – I just hold come concerns on a heavy track – Brad Stewart will ride.
Stampe (10) resumed and led them up and was run down late in the Listed Keith Noud when defeated by Tambo’s Mate (Race 7 – horse 5). He has drawn well on the rails and will probably sit in behind the speed – horses like Zoustyle (5) and Weona Smartone (11) – he could just be the one that causes an upset in this race – Sean Cormack will ride.
Selections:
11 – Weona Smartone 3 – Hard Empire 5 – Zoustyle 10 – Stampe Rough chance – (9) Shooting For Gold
Race 10 The Mode Stakes
The last race on this massive ten race program. Set weights for three-year-old fillies.
Genuine speed in the race makes me think the Gollan Racing trained – Putontheredlight (10) could be the right way to go with her ability to let down late and come home. Jimmy Orman will ride.
Me Me Lagarde (6) is trained by Edmonds Racing on the Gold Coast – she won emphatically first up and looks like she will strip fitter for that effort – Robbie Fradd retains the ride.
The stable mate Lime Soda (11) could cause a major upset at $51 in this field. She resumed at Ipswich and slayed an ordinary field. She is drawn to sit a few pairs back and if she handles the wet track, I think she will let down well late with Brad Stewart looking to cause and upset and send the bookies home cheering!
Najmaty (5) is trained by Snowden Racing and has been racing in Victoria in Group races. A sharp drop in grade here. Will be ridden by Michael Cahill – don’t worry about the soft surface she will handle that – I think Doomben will suit her as well.
Rhapsody Rose (2) is trained by Chris Munce and has had a six week freshen up since beating them over 1400 metres last time out. That fitness should see her in the finish this weekend despite dropping back to 1200 metres. Ryan Maloney will have to find her a nice spot somewhere - drawn in barrier 14.
Miss Hipstar (3) is second up here and could appreciate the wet track. Larry Cassidy rides her well and she too could cause an upset in this last race.
A tough way to end the day – many chances if you steer away from the more fancied runners.
Selections:
10 – Putontheredlight 6 – Me Me Lagarde 5 - Najmaty 2 – Rhapsody Rose Rough chance – (3) Miss Hipstar & (11) Lime Soda ______________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
Well, it looks like a battle between Jimmy Orman and Ryan Maloney. It will all come down to who ends up having the most runners take their place in these fields on the wet tracks. I will say Jimmy Orman to get the chocolates after he was seen at Kilcoy last weekend working hard as a strapper for his boss and fiancée Heidi Whalley!
