WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JANUARY 22, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, January 20, 2022
Back at Doomben this weekend after a wonderful MAGIC MILLIONS Day at the Gold Coast last weekend. The highlight was Coolangatta winning the Magic Million two-year-old classic. She was strong to the line and was superbly rated by James McDonald.
The other highlight for me was the win of the Greg Hickman trained Eleven Eleven – I think that is three wins in a row on Magic Millions Day on consecutive years – a superb training effort and a sensational ride by Hugh Bowman to get him home in the last bound.
This weekend the track is rated ‘soft’ and the rail is in the true position for the entire track. With showers forecast for the rest of the week – let’s hope that the track does not get worse than this.
Straight into the preview.
NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
A tough race here – two-year-old runners. Most of them lining up to face the starter for the first time.
Maybe something on the Annabel Neasham trained Bessmati (5) to be ridden by Jim Byrne who has had three trials under her belt.
Not a race I am keen on.
Selections:
5 – Bessmati 2 – Pomade 8 – Licensed and Ready 1 – Chikari Rough chance – (6) Good Girl
Race 2
Edmonds Racing has Indian Dreamer (3) in this race. Was a strong effort last time out across the road at Eagle Farm. Is third up now with Ryan Maloney in the saddle – looks the one to beat.
Tamilaide (4) looks well placed here in a small field. He gets back and needs luck in his races. This weekend with the small field he gets his chance finally to post a win. His effort in The Wave a fortnight ago was good enough to suggest that he will be right in this race – Ben Thompson will ride for Les Kelly. Dropping back to the mile should see him very competitive.
Brad Stewart won on Gave Us Up (2) last time out. This Barry Baldwin trained gelding likes wet tracks and will appreciate the mile this weekend.
Selections:
3 – Indian Dreamer 4 – Tamilaide 2 – Gave Us Up 9 – Mistress Of Doom
Race 3
Another race over the mile here.
I like the Maryann Brosnan trained Traduce (8) who is second up here. He probably will be better over a longer distance, but I think, with some speed on here, he may get conditions to fly home late. Robbie Fradd will need to rate him well to get the job done.
Sea Raider (5) won last time out a fortnight ago on his home track on the Gold Coast. Was heavily supported on that occasion. Noel Callow rides him again here this weekend – he does love wet tracks.
Supergiant (6), who is trained by Michael Costa, resumed on his home track when defeated by Sea Raider (5). This runner does like wet tracks and I think the mile will suit him second up – Andrew Mallyon will ride.
Selections:
8 – Traduce 5 – Sea Raider 6 – Supergiant 1 – Cloak
Race 4
Open race here over 2000 metres.
See Marie (2) is trained by Desleigh Forster and will be ridden by Jim Byrne. Last time out she went around in The Wave at the Gold Coast – she got too far back in a large field – but still made some good ground late. She is well placed here.
Continuation (5) is trained by Kris Lees Racing. This gelding won consecutive races, over 1800 metres and then 2000 metres, before going back to the mile last time out. Maybe the extra distance and a damp track gets him in well here at great each way odds around - $16. Andrew Mallyon rides.
Bengal Bandit (1) loves the going – if the track deteriorates here this weekend, he looks well placed by trainer Lauren Abbott. Jimmy Orman rides for her.
Selections:
2 – See Marie 5 – Continuation 1 – Bengal Bandit 11 – Dune Forty Five
Race 5
The three-year-old boys face the starter here. This is a tough race.
I like one here at $41 each way. Trained by Bryan Dais, I think that Logomania (4) could cause a major upset here with Mark Du Plessis in the saddle. He is only a lightly raced runner with four career starts. He won second up – broke his maiden at Ipswich over 1100 metres. He then went to the Gold Coast and raced in a very good race won by The Ritz (Race 9 number 7). The run was good for mine. I think that the 1300 metres may have been a little hard third up – back to 1200 metres here I like his chances to cause a major upset.
Pentito (5) resumes here for Jason Edwards. Ryan Maloney will ride. Some good form and he did break his maiden last preparation. Racing here first up at 1200 metres look for a solid run.
Kipsbay (11) is a Chris Waller Racing runner. He has been heavily supported to win this race with Larry Cassidy to ride. Is third up this preparation. Has run his past two starts in midweek races in Sydney – then he won a barrier trial in preparation for his debut run in QLD. The barrier trial was solid enough to suggest that he will be competitive here – I just think the odds are too short – I will gamble against him.
Selections:
4 – Logomania 5 – Pentito 11 – Kipsbay 3 – Sacca Rough chance – (2) Alf’s Magic
Race 6
The three-year-old girls face the starter here. This is the first leg of the Quaddie.
There is some serious speed in this race.
Amity Gal (7) who won on debut for David Vandyke and Ryan Maloney come to town looking to make it two from two. She will have to run 1200 metres here this weekend – with pressure on up front from barrier 9. I think I will say she can win – but I will look for some value.
Frosty Mango (2) ran a solid second on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago. That was her second run from a spell – both times she has finished second. I just think, with the speedsters in the race, Jim Byrne will be able to sit off the speed and then have the last crack at them.
Self Indulgent (6) is the stable mate from Gollan Racing. This runner was heavily backed at a midweek meeting a few weeks ago and flashed home late over 1050 metres. That run was impressive, and I think the extra distance this weekend and the conditions she encounters gets her nicely in the race here.
Selections:
2 – Frosty Mango 7 – Amity Gal 6 – Self Indulgent 8 – Autumn Daze
Race 7
Gollan Racing is well represented here again. I like the chances of one of his runners right down the bottom of the field here – Shamrock Lu (19). The only drama is if the track gets into the heavy range – if it stays soft, he should be right in this race right up to his eyeballs – Jim Byrne will ride. He had his races evenly spaced and I think he has been screaming out for the 1200 metres.
Purroni (10) is third up here this weekend for the stable. She has a solid third up record and has drawn well. Ben Thompson will ride – do not leave out of your top three here.
Mix (3) is trained by Lee Freedman on the Gold Coast and has won his past three efforts. Last time he won at Kilcoy. He steps up to city grade for the first time – his win at Kilcoy was impressive. Noel Callow who has ridden him for his two previous wins on the Gold Coast will ride him here this weekend. He can lead or take a sit – should get a nice run-in transit but I think faces his toughest task to date – I cannot have him on top here – let alone $3.80 favourite.
Zelify (17) has some gear changes and could fill a place at a huge price.
Selections:
19 – Shamrock Lu 3 – Mix 10 – Purroni 17 – Zelify
Race 8
No Metro Win race – tough assignment for punters.
Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted train a nice type here in Kingston’s Here (13). This weekend Ronnie Stewart will ride him for the first time. He has won both starts over these short distances since resuming from a spell. They have placed him well and, while he faces a tougher task here against this field, I think he can get the job done.
Aleysa’s Dream (8) is trained by Nick Walsh and won last time out at Eagle Farm – this mare does have some very good soft surface track form – is ideally drawn in barrier 7 and probably will take up the lead – Jim Byrne will ride this week.
Full Nelson (4) resumes here after a short let up for trainer Brian Smith and will be ridden by Andrew Spinks – roll out the red carpet SPINKSY is in town! This gelding always goes well fresh – he could show up at a big price.
Howwonderfullifeis (9), trained by Barry Squair, loves heavy tracks – so if the track gets into this range she comes into calculations. The real issue is barrier 16 – she will have to race midfield.
Selections:
13 – Kingston’s Here 8 – Aleysa’s Dream 4 – Full Nelson 9 – Howwonderfullifeis Rough chance – (10) Global Citizen
Race 9
A class 6 race to finish off the day – some nice types engaged here. Probably the best race of the day – there should be a few well supported here.
I think you must respect the Tony Gollan Racing pair here – Palladas (14) and Glitter Strip (16).
Palladas (14) will be ridden by Jim Byrne – he has a very solid book of rides on this program and could finish with three or more winners if he gets any luck. Was sent out a heavily backed favourite last time out on the Gold Coast.
I don’t think the way the races were run on the day and the track conditions suited this gelding. He flew home late just falling short of defeating The Ritz (7) who meets here today – there is no changes in the weights here – so they both should feature in the finish when the judge calls a halt to the race.
The stable mate is Glitter Strip (16) – she struck a deteriorating track at the Gold Coast last time out and ended up racing on a heavy surface – this is not her go. Despite that she put up a credible performance when knuckled down late and was defeated by Sea Raider (Race 3 Number 5). She is fourth up here this weekend and the blinkers are going on – watch for a marked improvement with Ben Thompson to ride.
Fleet Dove (15) ran a great race last time out. She drew wide and didn’t get much luck in the running when she was beaten by Strange Charm (9). With a better run I still think she is in this race with a genuine chance. If the track deteriorates and gets into the heavy range – she will thrive in the conditions.
Strange Charm (9) won here first up at Doomben over the same distance for Newcastle training Kris Lees. Andrew Mallyon retains the ride. She has had three weeks between runs – she looks well placed again here and meets similar opposition. It would not surprise me to see her post another win.
The Ritz (7), trained by Michael Costa, won on his home track last time out – a super effort – keep safe here – he may need some luck in this large field as he settles back and belts home. Jimmy Orman takes over this weekend – he second up from an injury to his hand – maybe he can get a winner on the board. He does have a superb record aboard this runner – 5 rides for 3 wins and 2 placings.
Selections:
14 – Palladas 16 – Glitter Strip 15 – Fleet Dove 7 – The Ritz Rough chance – (5) Roman Aureus & (9) Strange Charm _____________________________________________________________________ Jockeys Challenge
Looks like an easy win to Jim Byrne this weekend – he has some nice rides.
