WINNO'S WINNERS: SUNSHINE COAST, JANUARY 29

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, January 27, 2022

This weekend we are on the Sunshine Coast for the races where the track is rated “soft” and the rail is in the true position. A fair bit of rain over the past few days – hopefully the Sunshine Coast Turf Club will get some warm days in the lead up to race day to help the ground-staff out, but there are scattered showers forecast over the next few days – let us all hope we do not race on a heavy track.

Remember local horses and horses who have won here seem to have a distinct advantage. As does the resident race caller and Queenslander – Josh Fleming who always seems to have a good day here on the tip!

I am on holidays this weekend – so I will make it brief.

Straight into it.

NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

A tough race to start off the day.

Edmonds Racing train The Lioness (10) who won last time out here on a Friday evening. This weekend Brad Stewart goes aboard – she loves wet tracks. Has an impressive career record with 8 starts for 4 wins and 3 placings.

Caffrey (6) resumes here for Desleigh Forster – owned in part by Peter Moody and comes out of some very good form in Victoria. The gelding has been sensationally backed since the markets have opened firming from $11 to $6. Jim Byrne will ride.

Wolf Moon (8) is trained locally by Billy Healey. Resumed here in the race won by The Lioness (10) – on that occasion he led and was run down late. Ben Thompson retains the ride. Has won second up previously.

If you want a roughie here keep Magic Conqueror (5) in your selections. He is trained by Kelly Schweida and will be ridden by Larry Cassidy. The gelding is second up his weekend and has raced well previously second up. He likes wet track as well – something tells me he could cause a major upset.

Selections:

10 – The Lioness
6 – Caffrey
8 – Wolf Moon
5 – Magic Conqueror
Rough chance – (4) Happy Babe

Race 2

Solid field over 1400 metres.

Renouf (11), trained on the track by Paul Jenkins and to be ridden by Jimmy Orman, is on the quick back up from a solid effort last weekend at Doomben. Back on her home track - loves wet conditions – looks well placed.

The Cullinan (10) around $21 is a great each way chance for mine. Trained by Bryan Dais, Boris Thornton will ride this gelding. He is second up here, and I really think the 1400 metres is perfect for this runner. He has won second up – has some solid form on wet tracks without posting a win. Keep safe.

Garoppolo (3), the early market favourite, is third up now this preparation and has been well supported in both runs from a spell. Jaden Lloyd will be looking to celebrate his 20th birthday (earlier in the week) with a win here for trainer Maryann Brosnan. Has won at the track – good support since the markets have opened – I assume the stable expect a huge performance this weekend. Oh, yes Happy Birthday for earlier in the week Jaden!

Stormy Rock (9) could pose a threat at big odds – likes wet tracks and could show up here.

Selections:

11 – Renouf
10 – The Cullinan
3 – Garoppolo
9 – Stormy Rock

Race 3

Race three and it is for the three-year-old runners! Not a fan of this race – looks a very tough affair – probably should be having a drink whilst the race is on!

With that in mind maybe the topical tip is Why We Drink (1) trained by Jan Pritchard. Has good wet track form – a last start winner at Ipswich over the mile as well. Brad Stewart to ride – should get the run of the race here.

I like one here from the Mick Lakey stables at massive odds to maybe run a bold race – Spill The Secret (11). He has two career runs now over 1100 metres and 1200 metres. The way he has raced in both starts would suggest a mile is what he is looking for. Taylor Marshall will ride this weekend and I really think that he is wonderful each way odds and could cause an upset. Currently around $31

Drive a Deel (9) is trained on the track by Natalie McCall. This filly has only had two careers starts as well. Should race handy in the running and has the claim for Jaden Lloyd.

Gambu (5) was impressive on debut at Ipswich on a heavy track winning over 1350 metres. Trained on the Gold Coast by the Chris Waller team – keep safe.

Selections:

1 – Why We Drink
11 – Spill The Secret
9 – Drive A Deel
5 – Gambu
Rough chance – (2) Military Gambler

Race 4

A few early scratchings here.

Gollan Racing’s Muschialli (4) looks well placed here. Has had a four week freshen up since a very good win at Doomben on Boxing Day. Will get back midfield – but there is a heap of speed in the race – watch him storm home late and eat them up – Ben Thompson will ride.

Legal Espirit (2) is trained by Donald “Ducky” Baker. Has a very good record – 6 starts and 5 wins and a placing – so, never been out of the money so far. He resumes here – has a perfect record on soft tracks with 3 starts for 3 wins. Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) will ride him, and his claim will be handy – this runner is seriously over the odds at $5 – he is a genuine racehorse and will race well.

Blackjack Boom (8), trained by Toby & Trent Edmonds, has won two from two here on the track. and has also won two recent barrier trials – first up here with Robbie Fradd aboard – keep safe.

Ribiquitous (3) is trained by Chris Anderson. Resumed winning at Doomben in a good time and fashion. Nothing wrong with the form and has won at this track and in soft ground – Jim Byrne rides here.

The stable mate is Rattlesnake (11). He is part owned by some keen followers of my tips and previews. No chance for mine on a soft track first up – so you can slither back under your rocks! That is a special shout out for the GOVES crew! Seriously, a nice trial a fortnight ago – maybe a place at best.

Selections:

4 – Muschialli
2 – Legal Espirit
8 – Blackjack Boom
3 – Rubiquitous

Race 5

An open sprint over the 1000 metres. This race normally can present an upset each year!

Weona Smartone (2) is the early favourite and is trained on the course by David Vandyke. Last start at the Gold Coast it took all of Noel Callow’s riding ability to lift him over the line. He was carrying a huge weight, but I think he should have put the opposition away easier than he did. I am prepared to risk him this weekend – Ryan Maloney is back aboard – 7 rides for 6 wins aboard him. Look I may be wrong – he could just come out and destroy them – but a huge weight – a wet track – I am prepared to play wide. He has had a solid trial three weeks ago and freshened up since that run on the Gold Coast on December 4.

Je Suis Belle (7) is trained by Mark Currie and Taylor Marshall will ride. She can be ridden in front or take a sit. With the speed on from runners such as King Klaus (3) and Racecourse Road (1), I think that she will be two pairs back waiting to have the final crack at them late. A recent nice hit out on her home track at Toowoomba over 650 metres where she wasn’t asked to do too much has caught my attention. Down on the minimum as well with a superb track record and loves the wet - $5.50 looks a good gamble for mine!

Startantes (6) resumes here for Rob Heathcote Racing. She was superb last preparation, and she won a recent trial at Doomben and looked ready to have another solid preparation. She normally is left at the gates early – but this small field and this track, plus the speed on, should enable Robbie Fradd to let her find her feet, balance up and then storm home late down the crown of the track – good each way odds as well at $4.80.

Selections:

7 – Je Suis Belle
6 – Startantes
2 – Weona Smartone
1 – Racecourse Road

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie is a Class 3 race over 1000 metres.

I like a local runner here at odds to cause an upset in the first leg – Funny Money (14). Trained on the track by Stuart Kendrick, she has had five career starts – 2 wins and 3 placings - and has drawn the rails in barrier 1. This filly does like to scoot along and lead. Tiffani Brooker will ride this weekend. She has ridden her three times for 2 wins and a second. She partnered her recently in a barrier trial where she won here. She has had a 2 week freshen up since – I think she could get the job done here at big odds – somewhere around $21.

Xerri (3) is an Edmonds Racing runner. Has had three runs this prep and a five week freshen up since his last effort at Eagle Farm. Just forget that run – I really do not think he likes that track. On his previous outing he won here over 1000 metres and that effort would be good enough to get away with this race. Jaden Lloyd will ride.

Shamrock Lu (2) was scratched last weekend. Gollan Racing brings this runner to a track where he has previously performed well. Just some concern with the weight and the wet tracks this weekend, however, in saying that I thought his last start effort was good – a four week freshen up as well maybe look for a solid effort.

Chris Anderson trains One Shy Ruby (8) who has won both starts since resuming from a spell. Races well at this track and on wet surfaces – I just am concerned with barrier 10. I think she is under the odds at her current price of $4. Stephanie Thornton, who is two from two aboard her, retains the ride.

Zingalong (7) doesn’t win often – but is trained on the track and seems to fill a place at big odds when he strikes a wet track. He gets these conditions here this weekend – Tegan Harrison is back in the saddle on this runner!

Selections:

14 – Funny Money
3 – Xerri
2 – Shamrock Lu
8 – One Shy Ruby
Rough chances – (7) Zingalong & (15) Sweet Margot May

Race 7

A Class 6 race over 1600 metres.

Kelly Schweida trains Slow Hands (4). I think he has been looking for the mile and a wet track. He gets the right conditions this weekend to post a win. Brad Stewart will ride. There has been some solid support for this runner firming from $8 into $4.80 since the markets have opened. The way the race is expected to be run should suit this runner and he should be able to get home late.

Ocean Treaty (7), trained by Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted, will be around the $21 mark.. She has a tremendous second up record with two wins from three starts. Likes soft tracks and has won on this track. She was sent out first up on the Gold Coast and ran home well without threatening behind Sea Raider (who won again last weekend). That form looks great for this weekend – Ben Thompson will ride her here – he knows her well with 4 rides for 3 wins aboard her.

Smart Meteor (2) was strong winning last time out over 2000 metres for Chris Munce and Jaden Lloyd on a heavy track. They combine here again. I am not concerned with the reduction in the distance – the way he got home last start would indicate if this track is wet, he will be strong at the finish. He like to settle back in the field and make a late surge – this track will allow him to get a nice run out wide.

Seat Of Power (2) is on the quick back up from last weekend – trained on the track – keep safe.

Selections:

4 – Slow Hands
7 – Ocean Treaty
3 – Smart Meteor
2 – Seat of Power

Race 8 COASTLINE BMW SUNSHINE COAST CUP

This is the feature race of the program - over 1400 metres.

It is an open race; however, I cannot go past the Chris Waller trained Oscar Zulu (6) who turned in what I believe one of the runs of the day in the Magic Millions Cup when he drew barrier 15 - had no luck in running – was forced to go back and then was hampered in the straight and still got home late to be beaten less than three lengths in the race won by Eleven Eleven. I think the form out of this race will stack up and I think he will get his chance to post a win here with Stephanie Thornton aboard from barrier 6. He should just be three pairs back and be too good for them late with this light weight. His previous win at Randwick in December was over 1400 metres – I expect him to get the job done here this weekend. He loves wet tracks as well. Each way all day for mine at around the $10 mark.

East Asia (12), trained by Robert Heathcote, was unlucky last time out on a heavy track in the Nudgee at Doomben over 1200 metres. I think that the 1400 metres here will be right up her alley. She got too far back last start and, considering the way she went to the line to win the Just Now over 1300 metres in early December, I expect her to race well here. She has had a 28 day freshen up and she has won a barrier trial since. I know that the stable has been very confident in the way she has come back this preparation. If she gets some luck in the running, she will be hard to hold out – Robbie Fradd will ride.

Desert Lord (4) is trained on the track by David Vandyke. He has never won on his home track and I think he would rather race on a good surface than a wet one. In saying that he is a quality runner that must be respected. Clearly Vandyke has this race set for him as he has had three barrier trials to get him ready for this first up assignment. Look at his effort in the Weetwood in September when he challenged Apache Chase in that race – he must be considered.

Kris Lees trains Animate (8) and his run in the Magic Millions Cup was also tremendous. 1400 metres is his pet distance, and he gets in well here on the minimum. Andrew Mallyon will ride. He was held up badly at the 200 metres mark in that race – nowhere to run late as well – but beaten only 1.5 lengths. Need I say anymore! Again, $10 is on offer and he should be thundering home late.

Some rough chance to Hard Labour (3) and Scallopini (5) as well.

Selections:

6 – Oscar Zulu
8 – Animate
13 – East Asia
4 – Desert Lord
Rough chances – (3) Hard Labour & (5) Scallopini

Race 9

They will go fast here – some speedsters are in the race.

I like Mass Destruction (3) to do that and cause destruction to this field in the last race! He stepped up to 1400 metres last start and I think he races better over 1200 metres. He needs luck in his running – needs a genuine tempo as well. The tempo should be strong, and I think, back to a big open track, it will allow Jimmy Orman either to go back or to go forward and ride him handy this weekend from barrier 3 if he chooses. Either way he looks a nice bet in the last race. He has a solid strike rate at this track as well with a win and a good second in two starts here.

There is a roughie here that could cause an upset – Explosive Quality (12). This mare is trained on the Gold Coast by Gillian Heinrich and her stable apprentice Sheriden Tomlinson has the ride. She gets in nicely at the weights and if Sheriden can take his full 3-kilogram allowance she represents great value at around $25 each way. Sheriden probably could make the weight is he shaves that wannabe moustache off! Good luck mate – into them!

Hilo (1) is the stable mate – carrying a whopping 61 kilograms – Noel Callow will ride. Probably gets his chance to show something here in conditions that will suit and a distance that should see him working home nicely.

Enterprise Keren (7) is trained by Mick Lakey. She raced well when resuming over the unsuitable distance if 1110 metres when defeated by Fasano (9). Jim Byrne will ride her this weekend where she is second up over a distance she thrives at. She has a wonderful second up record with 4 starts – 3 wins and a third. She is going to be hard to hold out late. She may make her run at the same time as Mass Destruction (3). The weights may have the final say in the concluding stages on this wet track.

Selections:

3 – Mass Destruction
12 – Explosive Quality
7 – Enterprise Keren
1 – Hilo
Rough chance – (11) Bonaparte

WINNO V FLEMO

The battle continues this weekend with WINNO and FLEMO. I got the QLDer last weekend in a close fought battle. He is third up from a spell this weekend – on his home track – maybe pay particular attention to his tips as I have gone extra wide this weekend looking for some rough results! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
