WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 5, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, February 3, 2022
Back at Doomben this weekend where the track is rated “soft” and the rail is out 2.5 metres for the entire track.
I must say congratulations to Bryan Guy on a wonderful career as a horse trainer. His announcement earlier in the week of his retirement means that he will be sitting on the couch reading more of my tips! Seriously, a wonderful trainer and person that will be missed on race day. Good luck in retirement Mr Guy – enjoy your days of sleeping late and doing nothing!
NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
A tough race here – two-year-old runners. Most of them lining up to face the starter for the first time.
Maybe we should stay with a runner who has had a race start. Good Girl (10) is trained by Annabel Neasham and will be ridden by Stephanie Thornton. The filly produced a solid effort first up here a fortnight ago. I think she would have derived a great benefit from that run, and she probably will appreciate the slightly longer distance.
Russian Racketeer (3) is trained on the Gold Coast by Les Kelly – Boris Thornton rides. Has won a trial on his home track and he looked impressive in that trial. Some solid support in the early markets as well. Maybe he can jump and run well on debut. The interesting thing here could be that its brother and sister fighting it out in the final 50 metres – my money is on Stephanie to pip Boris !
Spiritualised (5) is a Gollan Racing runner. Solid effort first up at the Sunshine Coast when favourite – will be better for that run – Jim Byrne will ride.
Executive Stress (2) and Jemeldi (1) could show up.
Tough way to start the day – I would suggest you follow any market moves here.
Selections:
10 – Good Girl 3 – Russian Racketeer 5 – Spiritualised 2 – Executive Stress Rough chance – (1) Jemeldi
Race 2
A distance race over 2200 metres – I probably should have said this week’s lottery at the racecourse!
Chris Munce Racing has Outback Gladiator (10) going around with Ben Thompson aboard. Last time out led all the way and was run down in the final stride by Stuck With You (1) – I think he gets in well here at the weights and should be very competitive.
Stuck With You (1) is trained by Matthew Dunn Racing and Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) will ride again. Has won two in a row now and is shooting for a hat trick – tough to do in these types of races but he does love Doomben and is racing in good form.
Kutayha (5), a Chris Waller Racing runner, is fourth up here. Never raced over this distance and I think may struggle late. He is the early market favourite and Jim Byrne will ride.
Traduce (2) could show up here with Jaden Lloyd to ride – keep him in your multiples.
Selections:
10 – Outback Gladiator 5 – Kutayha 1 – Stuck With You 2 – Traduce
Race 3
An Open class race over 1200 metres.
Ef Troop (5) is second up here for Tony Gollan with Ben Thompson in the saddle. He resumed in the Magic Millions QTIS race over 1300 metres. That was a tough assignment for him first up. I think dropping back in distance and to a track where he has an exceptional record with six starts for 3 wins and 3 seconds. I am prepared to gamble and say he could get back in the winner’s stalls this weekend.
Roman Aureus (3) is trained by Brian Wakefield and Larry Cassidy will ride him again here. He loves Doomben and loves a track with some dampness. He won well last time out, and he will be very competitive here. The blinkers go on this weekend.
Axe (1) is a Michael Costa runner. He raced in the Magic Millions Cup won by Eleven Eleven. He performed well and I think dropping back from 1400 metres to 1200 metres will suit him here. I really think that 1200 metres is a distance where he thrives. Boris Thornton will ride him again here.
Selections:
5 – Ef Troop 3 – Roman Aureus 1 – Axe 4 – Constant Flight
Race 4
A large field over 1350 metres.
I like the run of Pentito (4) last time out. Trained by Jason Edwards, he has Sam Collett aboard this weekend. I hope that he can find the winner’s post first. He is second up this weekend and has won prior second up so keep safe.
Isis Carmella (1) is trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted. She comes off a win on a heavy track at the Sunshine Coast and has had a one month freshen up since that run. Nine career starts with 6 wins and 3 placings is something that we should take note of. Ben Thompson will ride.
Star Gamble (7) comes off an Ipswich win when resuming – finally bursting his maiden bubble. Steps up in grade this weekend for Chris Waller Racing – Jim Byrne will retain the ride. He may just go on with it now after posting a win.
Logomania (6) ran a good third last time out at huge odds. He steps up in distance and may improve sharply.
Selections:
4 – Pentito 1 – Isis Carmella 7 – Star Gamble 6 – Logomania Rough chance – (8) Merimee
Race 5
This is a tough race.
Frederick The Dane (6) is an Edmonds Racing runner with Ben Thompson to ride. Has drawn well in barrier 2. He will jump and lead here. I am not sure whether the last start when he failed was due to the wet track or just over raced. I think that on his previous starts he could have a form reversal here this weekend.
Gogol (3) is trained by Les Kelly who flew home last start to run a great second. He drew wide on that occasion and has again this weekend in barrier 13. He handles the wet tracks – just hope he gets ridden closer to the speed this weekend. Boris Thornton in the saddle.
Daltoro (5) has won on this track previously. He has had a seven-week let up and a recent trial to get him ready for this race. Trained by Kris Lees and Andrew Mallyon will ride here. Gets the run of the race from barrier 7.
Osamu (7) comes up from Sydney for the Annabel Neasham – some okay runs in NSW – with the class of this race and the quality of it – maybe he can post a win for his owners.
Maya Bay (8) is trained by Sears Racing – drops back from 1200 metres to this shorter distance that should see him be competitive here.
Selections:
6 – Frederick The Dane 3 – Gogol 5 – Daltoro 7 – Osamu Rough chance – (8) Maya Bay
Race 6
This is the first leg of the Quaddie.
There is some serious speed in this race.
I think I will go for something that will sit off the speed and motor home. That horse will be Rich Lister (10) trained by the Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted team and will be ridden by Jaden Lloyd whose claim will come in handy late here. This mare resumes this weekend – a very good trial last week where she won. Just one small reservation is the wet track – hasn’t had the best form on wet surfaces. Drawn handy in barrier 1 I expect her to sit in behind the speed and then romp home!
Fall On A Star (11) is a nice consistent mare who is trained by Edmonds Racing. Comes out of the Magic Millions carnival where she failed on soft track. Maybe if the track gets worse than soft, I will leave her out, however, I am prepared to forgive her the run at the Gold Coast last start – she goes back in grade this weekend and has Ben Thompson riding. Keep in your multiples if we do not see a heavy track.
Grace Bay (5) is an NSW visitor from the Claire Lever stables. Cejay Graham will ride. She is a very good apprentice who claims 3 kilograms. Has been racing very consistently in some good quality races without much luck. Down in the weights here and on a soft track may see her pop up and beat this lot at some seriously good odds of around $7.
Liza With a Zee is Gollan Racing’s representative – Jim Byrne to ride. Just think that maybe she was unfortunate last time out second up here. Her first up win at Ipswich was very good. She handles a wet track – do not overlook this runner. She has drawn the car park in barrier 14 – but I expect Byrne will get in as the speed up front goes mad, and she probably will be suited late.
Selections:
10 – Rich Lister 5 – Grace Bay 11 – Fall On A Star 2 – Liza With a Zee
Race 7
Class 3 race here over 1350 metres.
Gollan Racing is well represented here with two genuine chances that are difficult to split.
Palladas (5) was racing in Class 6 last time out and drops back to Class 3. Has had two solid seconds in his past two starts. Nothing wrong with the form line here in those two runs. He goes up in the weights and, if we do not see a heavy track, I think he is the best representative from the stable.
Glitter Strip (13) raced here last time out as well. She keeps on turning in admirable performances, however, I am just wondering if she is ready to go to the barn and be a mother. Ben Thompson picks up another strong ride in a day where he appears to have a very strong book of rides on paper. He probably will be short in the jockey’s challenge if all his rides take their place in the fields.
Zoukina (9) is trained by Stephen Lee with Sam Collett to ride. She is third up from a spell this weekend and comes off a win here three weeks ago when the main meeting was at the Gold Coast. She has a tremendous record on the Doomben track and must be considered.
Safework (11) has only 1 win from 29 starts. He does pop up at huge prices and run places. He has been racing in some higher quality races of late – drawn well in barrier 1 – could cause an upset.
A real roughie is Tintinwin (6) who has had a stable change after racing in Victoria. He is second up here this weekend for trainer Donald “Ducky” Baker. His first up effort over 1100 metres at Gatton was pretty good for mine. He gets up to a more suitable distance this weekend – however, I expect that once he gets to see a mile he will be even better. Two things for mine is he loves wet tracks – in fact he thrives on them – and, second, he has a claim for Leah Kilner. At $81 – he just could see the bookmakers cheering late if he can run over this lot late. A win would not surprise me.
Selections:
5 – Palladas 13 – Glitter Strip 9 – Zoukina 11 – Safework Rough chance – (6) Tintinwin
Race 8
A 1350 metre race – a huge field as well.
Rob Heathcote Racing has some solid chances here.
One that looks like she has come back well this preparation is right down the bottom of this field. Deep Sceiva (14) will be ridden by Ronnie Stewart. This mare was great last preparation and I expect on the strength of her trial win just over a week ago that she has done well in the paddock and will be ready for a first up win. Ronnie Stewart will ride her for the first time – she is around the $10 mark as well. I just think that, racing here first up on a wet track over 1350 metres, she could be ready to cause an upset here. She thrives on wet track and is down on the minimum - each way all day for mine.
Stuttering (9) is the stablemate. Leah Kilner will ride. He comes out of the Magic Million QTIS race won by Wisdom of Water. He thrives on heavy tracks – so if the heavens open and the track is downgraded – he is the one to be on! He is fourth up this preparation – again, I think this is the perfect conditions to see him get into the winner’s stalls. It could well be a Heathcote quinella in the race. He is a $10 chance as well.
Dreamreacher (11) is trained on the Gold Coast by Gillian Heinrich. Jaden Lloyd has been booked to ride. There has been a steady flow of money for this runner since the markets opened. He just has a habit of looking like he is going to win and getting beaten by something else on the day. He has two solid seconds to horses like Animate and Weona Smartone – solid form for a race like this. The claim will be important, and he does like soft tracks.
Sir Rocket (3) is trained by Michael Costa. Tegan Harrison will ride. He is undefeated on soft tracks with 4 wins from 4 starts. Has drawn awkwardly in barrier 14, however, I think that he can let the others roll forward and get probably four or five pairs back and work home strongly late. His efforts over the Magic Millions Carnival were solid and he must be considered here.
Renegade (4) is trained in NSW by Wayne Oakenfull. He was at his best in the Inverell Cup lumping a massive 61.5 kilograms with Danny Peisley in the saddle, getting home as the others stormed home late. It was a brilliant ride and having his second start for the new trainer and a recent barrier trial win at Tamworth he could just cause an upset here in this race. Larry Cassidy will ride him here – will probably be two pairs back – as he will not need to lead them with Zigallene (10) in the race. I think he could be a great each way chance at $21.
Huge exotic wins here if my selections can fill the placings!
Selections:
14 – Deep Sceiva 9 – Stuttering 11 – Dreamreacher 3 – Sir Rocket Rough chance – (4) Renegade
Race 9
A race over the mile to finish off the day. Hopefully the afternoon storms that have plagued QLD this week stay away!
The Ritz (5) loves wet tracks – trained by Michael Costa and Jimmy Orman will ride. He just gets back in his races and needs a lot of luck in the running – I am not saying he cannot win but $4.60 is too short for me. He has never won here at Doomben – but each time he has raced in some high-quality races – maybe a turn of luck this weekend.
Stardome (3) loves wet tracks. Will be ridden by Jim Byrne for the Chris Waller Racing team. He is second up over the mile – he will appreciate the extra distance.
I have found one at odds here that I like to cause an upset in the last race – the Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted trained Ocean Treaty (12). This mare resumed at the Gold Coast on a heavy track – probably not the most ideal surface for her. She is better in soft or good ground. She has 2 wins from 3 starts second up – I think a mile will suit her well here. Ben Thompson in the saddle as well and he has been on her four time for three wins. I like winning combinations – so let’s jump into the $12 on offer each way and see if we cannot get a good result to finish off the day.
Diva Belle (13) is a NSW runner – again Claire Lever and Cejay Graham combining here. She has no dramas on the wet tracks either. I think last time out at Rosehill the 1800 metres was just too far for her. Back to a mile where she has won and at $10, I think she can test the local runners and maybe post a win.
Rough chances to runners like Jetty (7) and Prinnys Princess (16) who should perform well here.
Selections:
12 – Ocean Treaty 5 – The Ritz 13 – Diva Bella 3 – Stardome Rough chance – (7) Jetty & (16) Prinnys Success ______________________________________________________________________
