WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 12
By Darren Winningham | Friday, February 11, 2022
Back at Doomben this weekend where the track is rated “soft” and the rail is out 4.5 metres for the entire track. With warm weather predicted I think we will get an upgrade here. I must thank everyone who reached out on Wednesday and wished my Happy Birthday – much appreciated.
We got good results last weekend jagging the Quaddie and the Treble at Doomben!
Hopefully we can get some more winners.
NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
A race over the mile.
Rob Heathcote has been quiet of late – maybe he can change that in the opening race with Warp Speed (2) to be ridden by Leah Kilner. He is third up here dropping back from a strong Class 6 race to this grade – despite the large weight looks well placed.
Magic Conqueror (5) is third up this weekend and loves the mile here at Doomben. Trained by Kelly Schweida and to be ridden by Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) he should be right in this race.
Abracadazzle (8) is trained by Tony Gollan – has been mixing up her form. On her last start effort here over the mile when a solid third to Indian Dreamer (Race 2 – number 4) she must be considered.
Selections:
2 – Warp Speed 5 – Magic Conqueror 8 – Abracadazzle 10 – Valley Of Dreams
Race 2
Another mile race here.
Indian Dreamer (4) won here at silly odds last time out. Trained by Edmonds Racing I really cannot see why he cannot post consecutive wins for Toby & Trent Edmonds. He defeated Tamilaide (3) last time out who was sent out a heavily supported short, priced favourite. Ryan Maloney retains the ride.
Tamilaide (3) is the early favourite here again. I am just not sure that he has come up this preparation. If he doesn’t win or show something here this weekend, I would think that he may head to the paddock. Ben Thompson keeps his association with this gelding.
Tesarc (6) is trained by Mark Currie. I think he will appreciate if the track is good or better this weekend. Look for him to show something. He could well cause an upset to these more favoured runners and post a win at big odds. Jim Byrne rides him.
Selections:
4 – Indian Dreamer 3 – Tamilaide 6 – Tesarc 2 – Irukandji
Race 3
Another one of the distance races. A different winner each week.
On the quick back up after a solid effort last weekend Stardome (4) looks well placed here. A good effort when second to Ocean Treaty – Ronnie Stewart will ride for Chris Waller Racing.
Our Candidate (1) is from the Kris Lees Racing yards. Comes out of some solid Randwick efforts and comes here looking to post a win – Andrew Mallyon will ride and see if he can change the fortunes of this gelding.
Seat Of Power (3) is third up this weekend – does like this distance – could improve sharply for Gary Duncan. Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) will ride, and his claim should enhance his chances.
Selections:
4 – Stardome 1 – Our Candidate 3 – Seat Of Power 7 – Dune Forty Five
Race 4
Desleigh Forster trains Caffrey (5) who is second up here for the new stable. Was a good effort first up at the Sunshine Coast. With speed in the race, he should get a nice run a few pairs back. Jim Byrne will ride again, and this gelding has won previously second up - I like him to post a win this weekend.
Gave Us Up (8), trained by Barry Baldwin, worked home nicely last time out when second to Indian Dancer (Race 2 – 4). If he runs like that here, he should finish in the placings. I think dropping back in distance to the 1350 metres will assist him as well. Mark Du Plessis will ride.
Knight Mariner resumes here after an 82-week spell after suffering an injury in a race. Trained by Tony Gollan his runs and trials would suggest he is ready to show up. He does come off a long spell, however, he was in great form prior to the injury – if he can return to that form, he will be difficult to hold out here. Ben Thompson will ride.
Selections:
5 – Caffrey 8 – Gave Us Up 7 – Knight Mariner 3 – Cracker Essgee Rough chance – (15) Mosshiki
Race 5
This is a tough race.
Capri Of Tuffy (3) is a Robert Heathcote runner. She has won her past three starts – and steps out into weekend grade for the first time. Stable apprentice Leah Kilner will ride, and she has ridden this mare to victory in all three starts for the stable. I think that $7 is silly odds here for a mare in good form.
The Lioness (6) is an Edmonds Racing runner. She has posted two wins from four starts this preparation. Solid form for a race like this. I think that the slow pace of the race last time out didn’t suit her style of racing – if you forgive her for that run, she could bounce back to win this race. Ryan Maloney goes aboard. There are a couple of runners who will set a good tempo here – that should see her flashing home late.
Zoukina (4) is trained by Stephen Lee. Last time out won here after settling off the speed and getting home late. Samantha Collett will ride this weekend.
Purroni (5) is a Gollan Racing runner. She has posted two solid second placings in her last two starts. Ben Thompson will ride her again. The extra distance could see her competitive here.
Kris Lees trains Confessed (10) and brings her to Queensland looking to get a win. There has been some solid support for this runner since the markets have opened firming from $10 to $6 – could pay to follow the money.
Selections:
3 – Capri Of Tuffy 6 – The Lioness 4 – Zoukina 5 – Purroni Rough chance – Confessed (10)
Race 6
This is the first leg of the Quaddie.
There is some serious speed in this race.
Boomnova (2) is trained by Chris Munce and has had a freshen up since two solid runs at the Gold Coast over the Magic Millions carnival. She has drawn wide here in barrier 13, but she should be able to get across easily and take up the running. She will be in front for a long way here with Boris Thornton to ride. I know she has never won over 1110 metres, but I just think that she could be too speedy and too tough for this lot.
Melisma (13) is trained by Gollan Racing and will be ridden by Ben Thompson. At her first start for the new stables, she won well at the Sunshine Coast. Faces a stiff rise in class this weekend, however, the first up effort was solid enough to suggest she will be competitive here this weekend. She has drawn well in barrier 3 – probably will take a sit in behind Boomnova (2) and attempt to overhaul her late.
Befana (11) ran a nice second to Zoukina (race 6 – 4) last time out – worked home late. Must be respected here.
Lucicello (3) is first up here after a 29-week spell for her new trainer Desleigh Forster. This runner has been smashed in the betting firming from $11 to $4.40. She must have been showing some positive efforts on the track as there have been no official barrier trials. Jim Byrne will ride. Where there is smoke there is normally fire – follow the money!
Selections:
2 – Boomnova 13 – Melisma 3 – Lucicello 11 – Befana Rough chance – (5) One Shy Ruby
Race 7
The three-year-old runners here over 1200 metres.
First up Enterprise Pomme (3) looks well placed. Trained by the dynamic duo of Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted – they are having a tremendous run of late. This filly had a good hit out in a recent trial and looked forward enough to get the job done here. Boris Thornton will ride her for the first time.
Self-Indulgent (4) is a Gollan Racing runner. She comes off a good win three weeks ago here. She has a solid record on the Doomben track. Sam Collett rated her to perfection last time out to get the job done. I cannot see why she will not be in the finish when the judge calls a halt to the race this weekend.
Star Gamble (9) won first up at Ipswich when resuming for Kelly Schweida. The way he won that race, and the time, suggests to me he has come back better this preparation. The $7 on offer is great each way value for mine. Ben Thompson will ride this weekend. Keep safe.
Legal Esprit (1) has been racing in consistent from. Despite the weight he looks well placed. With the speed on this weekend, he probably gets his chance to settle and storm home late. KWT will ride him for “Ducky” Baker and his claim does bring him right into contention here.
Probably a nice trifecta and first four race.
Selections:
3 – Enterprise Pomme 9 – Star Gamble 4 – Self Indulgent 1 – Legal Espirit
Race 8
An Open race over the mile.
With Zigallene (11) in the race they will be moving quickly throughout the running. It probably sets the race up nicely for horses like Profit (1) and Sea Raider (5).
Profit (1) will appreciate the pace on. He won last time out at the Sunshine Coast when Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) made a move and put him into the race a little earlier than he normally does – this was a winning move by the apprentice. He strikes a similar field this weekend and with KWT’s claim he gets in well. I think that he will need some luck here – but if he gets a good run-in transit, he will be flashing home late.
I think Sea Raider (5) will be ridden forward and will have a better transition in the running. This gelding has won his past two starts and just seems to have found a purple patch of form for Gold Coast trainer John Gilmore. This weekend Stephanie Thornton will ride him, and she has won on him previously. I think that he is the one to beat.
Chris Waller Racing has Humbolt Current (6) in the race, Has had a freshen up since racing here on New Year’s Day over 2000 metres. I think that he will be suited by the firmer ground and will appreciate the mile first up. Again, with the speed engaged here I think that he will be working home late. Larry Cassidy has the ride for Star Thoroughbreds – he has had an excellent strike rate on these horses over the past few months.
Selections:
5 – Sea Raider 1 – Profit 6 – Humbolt Current 7 – Sir Barnabus Rough chance – (3) Hail Manhattan
Race 9
The last race is a Class 6 contest over 1200 metres.
Tromonto (14) resumes here for Jonny Field and Jaden Lloyd has been booked to ride. Gets in super at the weights and will jump and be prominent from barrier 6. His efforts last preparation were mostly very good – culminating in him racing in the Silver Eagle at Randwick where he was outclassed. He has a super first up record and I expect him to be right in the race here when the whips are cracking. He may be a sitting duck late if he is a little underdone for this first up assignment with his main opposition Kingston’s Here (7) probably sitting off him to have the last crack at him late. I just think the differential in the weights here and Jaden’s claim could be the deciding factor.
Kingston’s Here (7), trained by Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted, has won all three starts this preparation. He is very progressive and deserves to be the early favourite for the race. Ronnie Stewart rides again here this weekend. He does step up to 1200 metres – no trouble with the distance and he has drawn well. Look I suppose on logic he should be on top here – I just think that Tromonto is better placed in a Class 6 race. Might be proven wrong – but that’s my logic!
Snitzify (13) resumes here for new trainer Tony Gollan. He had a good barrier trial nearly a month ago. That to me demonstrated that he has settled in well in QLD. I think he may be better for the run, however, in saying that he could run a bold race here first up at odds. Stephanie Thornton is in the saddle.
Explosive Quality (15) led them up at the Sunshine Coast last time out and was run down late by Mass Destruction. Drawn well here this weekend in barrier 5 and has Ben Thompson riding this weekend, I expect him to lead them here and make them chase him all the way down the straight. He loves this track and distance – great each way chance at around $17.
Selections:
14 – Tromonto 7 – Kingston’s Here 13 – Snitzify 15 – Explosive Quality Rough chance – (8) Montenegro Man ______________________________________________________________________ Jockeys Challenge
Tough weekend – there are many that have chances here. Kyle Wilson Taylor, Ben Thompson, Leah Kilner and Jaden Lloyd. I think Jaden may pip Ben – but it will come down to the last race.
