EF NOV 14 - CASHOLET BY A NOSE
By Graham Potter | Monday, November 16, 2009
Eagle Farm, November 14, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 9m. NMW Handicap (Fillies & Mares) - 1200m. Time: 1-09.92. 1 Casholet; 2 Tootsie Zynsky; 3 Calm Before.
The Bryan Guy trained Casholet and the Helen Page Tootsie Zynsky flashed through the line together with the photo-finish decision coming down in favour of Casholet by a nose. It was the mare’s third win from her last four starts and her overall record now reads four wins from ten outings.
Jockey Matthew Palmer shot Casholet out of the gates from a wide draw and he then allowed the four-year-old to track the speed in third place as Fille De Neige and So Different set the tempo up front. Casholet, in turn, was tracked by Tootsie Zynsky in fourth spot.
Approaching the turn Palmer eased Casholet out three wide behind the leaders while Tootsie Zynsky stayed on the rail. Those two moves arguably decided the final outcome as Casholet surged forward into clear running while Tootsie Zynsky was held in a pocket, racing on the heels of Fille De Neige with So Different on his outside.
Casholet was all effort now and she swept to the lead inside the final 100m. Tootsie Zynsky, now in clear running, gave chase with meaning and she flew over the final 75m to turn the result into a head-bobber in which Casholet prevailed to take the honours by the narrowist of margins. WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Bryan Guy: “We got our revenge.” (Tootsie Zynsky, who finished second here, beat Casholet into fourth place last time out). “She’s a great little filly this. I’m going to try to get enough prize-money to have a crack at the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares with her - if she gets up to it.
“That’s our idea. Winning one of these today is going to help. She’ll get in with nothing on her back and, as you saw today, she drew the outside ... she took up a good position. At the coast (her home track) she can be there somewhere.
“She’s a bloody good, little filly. The 1400m suits her better. She had to do it from the barrier ... and the ride (of Matthew Palmer) was exceptional.”
Jockey Matthew Palmer: “I had my doubts whether I’d got up on the line, but it turned out I had which is always good. This is my first Saturday winner since returning from injury, so, yeah, it’s a big thrill.
“That’s my fourth win today on her. She is just a model of consistency. Everytime she turns out she puts her best foot forward. Bryan (Guy) and all of his team have her in tip-top shape everytime she starts.
“She did have to overcome the bad barrier. She showed a lot more pace from the gates than she usually does today. She really jumped into the bridle and ran. Consequently the things in front of us kind of came back to us on the home turn. We got left in front a little bit too early and we sort of got to the point where I thought, do I wait or do I keep going? When I asked her to give she kicked nicely.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Casholet): 12.00 steady. Favourite (Calm Before): 4.20 out to 4.60 in to 4.00.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Yamarjie (A. Mundy) and Zsazsa (J. Taylor) were tightened for room at the start between Tootsie Zynsky (D. Browne) and Motown Lady (M. Speers), which began awkwardly and shifted in.
Go Johemma (L. Rolls) was tightened for room at the start between Decibella (B. Pengelly) and Casholet (M. Palmer), both of which shifted ground. Calm Before (S. Katsidis) were tightened for room between Powderhall (P. Hammersley) and Fly To Win (M. Hellyer), which shifted in.
Passing the 700m, Calm before improved onto the heels of Zsazsa and had to be steadied. Go Johemma and Powderhall raced wide for the majority of the event.
A post race veterinary examination of Motown Lady which finished a distant last, revealed the filly to be sore in the off-side knee.
