WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 25, 2022

By Darren Winningham | Friday, February 25, 2022

UPDATE: AS EXPECTED - THIS MEETING HAS BEEN ABANDONED!!

Back at Doomben this weekend … well possibly back at Doomben this week where the track is rated ‘heavy’ and the rail is out 1 metres for the entire track. If this bad weather event continues we are likely to all get the day off.

A good weekend last weekend jagging the Quaddie and the Treble at Sunshine Coast!

I am going to be brief in case we do not end up racing – obviously look for horses proven on wet tracks.

Race 1

A race that could unearth a mudlark – the two-year-old runners face the starter here.

Look for any market movers will be my best suggestion.

I like the Kacy Fogden pair to maybe thrashing out the finish.

Shalook (7) resuming here with Ben Thompson to ride. I thought her effort first up behind Exo Lady was good. A solid hit out in a barrier trial on soft ground maybe something each way on her.

The stable mate is Stuck In A Dream (5) to be ridden by Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) – she should be right in this race. I think her run on debut at the Sunshine Coast was good enough to say she had some improvement left in her. I think Kyle’s claim will be advantageous here as well.

Les Ross trains Mishani Embrace (3) and Monty Savva will ride. Her claim of 3 kilograms appeals. Has had two seconds on heavy tracks – must respect this form – and these Mishani runners seem to always thrive in the wet.

Selections:

5 – Stuck In A Dream
7 – Shalook
3 – Mishani Embrace
1 – Ping

Race 2

A distance race over 2200 metres – some of these will sleep well after the race!

Chris Waller trains Fortified (7). Has some solid soft ground form. Comes out of a 2400 metres race at Randwick last start where he let down late. A drop back in distance should suit and with that extra distance under his belt in his last run he may be the strongest at the end of the race – Ben Thompson will ride.

Outback Gladiator (11) is the best performed on heavy tracks. Trained by Chris Munce – I expect they will come for this one in the market. He likes to lead and if he gets out in front and gets away with some cheap sectionals with Mark Du Plessis aboard, they will not run him down for mine.

Continuation (3) keeps mixing his form – he really needs a strong tempo in a race and the opportunity to flash home late – if he gets them conditions, he will be right in this.

Selections:

7 – Fortified
11 – Outback Gladiator
3 – Continuation
8 – Lunasnit
Rough chance – (9) Ostermeier

Race 3

This race is over a mile – have been decimated by early scratchings.

Knight Mariner (8) resumed last start after an 82-week spell after suffering an injury in a race. Trained by Tony Gollan, his run first up showed that he looks like he has recovered from that injury. Stepping up in distance and to a wet track will suit. He was in great form prior to the injury – if he can return to that form, he will be difficult to hold out here. Ben Thompson will ride.

Confessed (1) is the runner that looks best placed to beat the favourite. Trained by Kris Lees I really think that this mare has been screaming out for the mile. She gets back in the field and comes home late. I thought when the field had 17 runners that she may be in trouble. However, now the field has whittled away I think that Andrew Mallyon will be able to get her balanced and set sail late to run them all down. She was heavily backed last start and was unlucky in the running.

Alatar (17) goes best over a mile. Trained By Bruce Hill his last few efforts would suggest that he will be competitive here.

Selections:

8 – Knight Mariner
10 – Confessed
17 – Alatar
4 – Warp Speed

Race 4

Gave Us Up (8), trained by Barry Baldwin, was sent out a heavily backed favourite last time and did not fire. Back up to a mile, where he ran second to Indian Dancer the previous start, he should be right in this race. If he runs like that here, he should finish in the placings. I think the increased distance will assist him as well. Brad Stewart will ride.

They jumped out of trees last time to back Jubai Pride (14) - trained by John Gilmore - and Larry Cassidy will ride again. She takes a first look at the mile – but I tell you what, the way she let down last time and savaged the line late, she should run the mile out easily. Some nice odds on offer here this weekend at around the $9 mark.

Don’t’ Despair (7) is trained by the dynamic duo of Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted. First up at the Sunshine Coast over 1400 metres he turned in a solid effort. The wide barrier is of some concern. He has had some very good fortune when he leads. Boris Thornton may have to ride for luck here and take him back – although he may jump cleanly and take up the lead without using up too much petrol. The stable is on fire lately – do not leave out.

Plenty of other chances here – probably the toughest race on the program – maybe play wide here.

Selections:

9 – Gave Us Up
14- Jubai Pride
7 – Don’t Despair
8 – Tesarc
Rough chance – (4) Irukandji & (10) Call Me Legend

Race 5 The TATTERSALL’S MEMBERS CUP

Over the mile.

Let me get it over and done with – possibly egg on my face as well!

I think that Profit (1) is racing in career best form with Chris Anderson and Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) – but this weekend on the heavy track and the big weight I am saying he cannot win! There you go!

I think Sea Raider (5) will be ridden forward and will have better transit n in the running. This gelding has won his past two starts and just seems to have found a purple patch of form for Gold Coast trainer John Gilmore. This weekend Stephanie Thornton will ride him, and she has won on him previously. I think that he is the one to beat this weekend. He loves heavy tracks – is undefeated in 3 starts on a heavy track and will be the one to beat for mine!

Ocean Treaty stormed back into form last start with a dominant win in restricted grade. She is down on the minimum here this weekend. The Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted stable is flying and Ben Thompson partners her again – 5 rides for 4 wins on her super odds on offer as well at $14.

Smart Meteor (6) is super odds as well – he goes well for Jaden Lloyd and thrives on wet tracks – keep safe.

Selections:

4 – Sea Raider
7 – Ocean Treaty
1 – Profit
6 – Smart Meteor

Race 6

This is the first leg of the Quaddie.

Cool Lad (4) is trained by Matthew Smith and Robbie Fradd will ride. Was defeated here three weeks ago by Merimee (2). Has won on a heavy track – I think that he can tun the tables on that result.

Merimee (2) is trained by Chris Waller Racing with Jimmy Orman to ride. A super win last time out. She settled back in the field and stormed home to destroy the opposition. She has solid form on soft surfaces. She does go up in the weights and has a wide barrier draw – on metrics she will probably struggle to beat Cool Lad (4) here – but she was impressive last time out and when they start winning sometime, they just go on with it.

Star Gamble (5) was disappointing a fortnight ago. Maybe a case of the second up blues. His win first up was very good at Ipswich – forgive the last start effort he gets in well here this weekend.

Teranga (8) won on debut – well on protest on the Gold Coast – keep safe.

Selections:

4 – Cool Lad
2 – Merimee
5 – Star Gamble
6 – General Wolffe
Rough chances – (3) Alert and Ready - (8) Teranga

Race 7

A sprint over 1050 metres.

First up I have a huge respect for Contemptuous (7) trained by Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted with Jaden Lloyd to ride. Gets in well at the weights with the claim for Jaden. He is first up this weekend and does meet some more seasoned sprinters but WOW he was impressive last preparation with three starts and three wins. Wasn’t extended in a recent barrier trial and looked like he had plenty in reserve. Has a solid first up and soft track record – maybe a slight concern on the heavy track but looks well placed by the stable.

Le Suis Belle (8) loves wet and heavy tracks. Trained by Mark Currie in Toowoomba he will have Taylor Marshall riding here again here. He has a good strike rate on the mare with 3 rides – 2 wins and a second. Resumed last time out at the Sunshine Coast with a great effort behind Niedorp. That effort would see her very competitive here.

Le Palmier (3) is a Gollan Racing runner who just thrives racing fresh. Resumes here and has never been out of the money in five starts when he resumes. Has drawn well in barrier 2 with Jimmy Orman riding. With King Klaus (1) in the race he will probably get the run of the race in behind the speed, probably third in the running – that sets him up nicely to storm home late over the opposition.

Selections:

7 – Contemptuous
8 – Je Suis Belle
3 – Le Palmier
1 – King Klaus

Race 8

An open race – Class 3 at the 1200 metres.

A tough race this one.

Zingalong (6) is trained by Trevor Miller at the Sunshine Coast and Tegan Harrison will ride. I am certain that she will receive a free mud facial in the running here when the track is heavy – I think she would much prefer a proper facial treatment than a Doomben turf treatment. Nonetheless this gelding loves the heavy tracks and was good last time out here running third in a similar race over 1110 metres. Stepping up in distance should suit him.

Maybe The Best (9) is a promising type from the David Vandyke stables. Resumed for the new stable with a good effort wining on her home track on the Sunshine Coast. Ryan Maloney will ride her this weekend and he does have a tremendous strike rate with Vandyke. She has raced all her previous starts in Victoria where she has encountered soft and heavy tracks and has performed admirably.

Boomova (7) is a Chris Munce Racing runner with Boris Thornton to ride her again. If she was on a soft track, I probably would have more confidence. However, in saying that she will jump and run this weekend from barrier three. The distance is more to her liking as well. Down in the weights and looks well placed by Munce.

Tramonto (3) resumed last time out here and probably threw in one of his worst efforts of his career. It was reported he had respiratory issues after the race – so you can probably forgive that run. I see that Jonny Field has booked Jag Guthmann-Chester to ride him here this weekend. JAG has a superb strike rate on the gelding with seven rides – 3 wins and 3 seconds. He will get the best out of him here. If you can overlook the last start effort he looks well placed at the weights and in this grade. He has won on heavy tracks as well – keep your eye on him – they have posted a stupid price of $8 – he is better than that in this grade.

Torun (12) is trained by Rex Lipp & Nicholas Hahn. I did cop a bit of stick from some within the stable when they won the first race at Sunshine Coast last weekend – so I had better give them a mention this week. This gelding did resume here a fortnight ago and worked home nicely from eighth in the running without threatening. Should strip fitter for that effort and I think will appreciate the wet track.

Selections:

7 – Boomnova
6 – Zingalong
9 – Maybe The Best
3 – Tramonto
Rough chance – (12) Torun

Race 9

The last race – Class 6 over 1350 metres.

Will we get to this race – will we even race on the day?

Glitter Strip (9) is scratched from an earlier race for this race. Trained by Tony Gollan she has been racing consistently without much luck. She will appreciate the wet track and the distance. I think that her effort behind Sea Raider on the Gold Coast on a heavy track probably would suggest that the track conditions will not be of any concern. Another nice ride for Ben Thompson.

Dt Why Not (1) will be ridden by Michael Murphy again. No celebrations if you win this weekend Michael – the stewards will fine you for sure! This runner won here eight weeks ago when smashed in the betting. He since failed in a tougher race at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions Day. Since then, a win in a barrier trial would suggest that he is ready to go hard this weekend. He loves this Doomben track and has solid form on soft surfaces – never has seen a heavy track in his 19-start career.

I like Get The Idea (11) from the John Smerdon stables to be ridden by Taylor Marshall. He is second up for the new stable and thrives on heavy tracks. Currently $17 in the early markets as well. Resumed with a very good effort in a Class 6 race over 1200 metres. This distance is more his go. Look for a dramatic and winning performance for mine.

Safework (15) won here after a long run of outs for Scott Morrisey. He won is Class 3 last time out. This weekend he races in a Class 6 race. Down in the weights and a nice ride for Tegan Harrison to end the day on.

I think this is a nice trifecta and first 4 race – maybe plenty of cash in the pockets as we leave the track!

Selections:

11 – Get The Idea
9 – Glitter Strip
1 – Dr Why Not
15 – Safework
Rough chance – (2) Stuttering
