WINNO'S WINNERS: TOOWOOMBA, MARCH 5

By Darren Winningham | Friday, March 4, 2022

These selections were original made for the Doomben meeting knowing that the chances of the meeting proceeding were very slim. No surprise then that the meeting has been transferred.

While Toowoomba provides a different test for runners, the principles in sorting through the respective formlines still applies … so I will run with my original selections.

NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

This race is between Tamilaide (2) and Deep Sceiva (5).

They both have superior wet weather form – Deep Sceiva (5) will probably appreciate the step up to the mile.

On the other hand, Tamilaide (2) will appreciate the small field and should run them down late.

Selections:

2 – Tamilaide
5 – Deep Sceiva
3 – Tavion Prince
7 – Warp Speed

Race 2

The Gollan Racing pair have the race between them for mine.

Capital Tower (1) was awesome in his first preparation winning two from two starts – Jimmy Orman continues his association with this colt – I think he could win the JEWEL in a few weeks.

Flying Rupert (7) is on debut here. Impressed in a recent trial – winning by 5.5. lengths. Has been posted as short as $1.70 in some markets. Jim Byrne to ride. He is a Flying Racing Syndicate gelding that looks like he has some talent. I am going on with exposed form with my selection – but I am happy to be wrong here.

Selections:

1 – Capital Tower
7 – Flying Rupert
3 – Refuel
4 – Suenito

Race 3

Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted train Shesgottheboom (2) who won on debut here on a soft track three weeks ago. Has been posted at tomato sauce odds this weekend. The debut run was impressive – but I do not think that she warrants the short odds that they are offering up. Boris Thornton will look to keep his winning association with the Spirit Of Boom filly.

Honkytonk Diva (3) is resuming here for Kelly Schweida. I thought that she raced well in her first preparation before being tipped out for a spell. She is back this weekend after a very good win in a trial on a soft track. She is bred to like the wet tracks – I think that she is tremendous value at around $8 and Jimmy Orman will ride her for the stable.

Burnish Gold (1) is trained by Rex Lipp & Nick Hahn. The filly won on debut at Ipswich on a bog heavy track so there is no concern with her handling the wet going. She resumed with a great win at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. Jim Byrne retains the ride. She will be ridden off the speed and should be right in the finish.

Stellarashi (9) is a debutant from the Chris Munce Racing team who won a recent trial – keep safe.

Selections:

2 – Shesgottheboom
3 – Honkytonk Diva
1 – Burnish Gold
9 – Stellarashi

Race 4

Stardome (7) is trained on the Gold Coast by Chris Waller. Just seemed to plug away last start over a similar distance in the race won by Seat Of Power (2). I think the quick back up last start (a week between runs) probably was not to his liking. He has now had three weeks off and I expect him to turn up this weekend and perform well. Sam Collett will ride him here this weekend for the first time.

Lady Solerno (12) will be huge odds – currently $16 in some markets but is the best heavy or wet tracker in the race. Tiffani Brooker will ride this eight-year-old mare for Ronald Cameron. She thrives on heavy tracks and down on the minimum here must be respected.

Seat Of Power (2) won here last start emphatically. Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) will be in the saddle again. He is trained by Gary Duncan and does meet his opposition worse at the weights for that win. In saying that he was strong at the end of the race and a repeat performance will see him possibly post consecutive win in a staying race in Brisbane!

Our Candidate (3) could be an improver as well after a last start below average run. Possibly forgive that run – his previous efforts in NSW would suggest that he could upset this lot.

Selections:

7 – Stardome
12 – Lady Solerno
2 – Seat Of Power
3 – Our Candidate

Race 5

This race is over a mile.

Knight Mariner (8) resumed last start after an 82-week spell after suffering an injury in a race. Trained by Tony Gollan his run first up showed that he looks like he has recovered from that injury. Stepping up in distance and to a wet track will suit. He was in great form prior to the injury – if he can return to that form, he will be difficult to hold out here. Ben Thompson will ride.

Gave Us Up (3), trained by Barry Baldwin, was sent out a heavily backed favourite last time out and did not fire. Back up to a mile where he ran second to Indian Dancer the previous start, he should be right in this race. If he runs like that here, he should finish in the placings. Brad Stewart will ride.

I have gone for one at some value in the Chris Munce Racing trained Military Gambler (15) with Larry Cassidy to ride. Some good form over the mile – at around $9 – I think he will take some beating.

The other runner that thrives on wet tracks is the Barry Lockwood trained Isabellas Spring (14). She loves wet tracks, and she loves this distance and longer. The bonus for me is that apprentice Wendy Peel has been booked to ride and her three-kilogram claim makes her even better weighted.

Other than that, there are some other chances like The Cullinan (6) and Bold Pedro (16) that should be considered.

Selections:

15 – Military Gambler
8 – Knight Mariner
14 – Isabellas Spring
3 – Gave Us Up
Rough chances – (6) The Cullinan & (16) Bold Pedro

Race 6 TATTERSALL’S MEMBERS CUP

Over the mile. Just want to say nothing much has changed from last weekend for mine!

Let me get it over and done with – possibly egg on my face as well!

I think that Profit (1) is racing in career best form and Chris Anderson and Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) – but this weekend on the soft to heavy track and the big weight I am saying he cannot win! There you go!

I think Sea Raider (4) will be ridden forward and will have a better transition in the running. This gelding has won his past two starts and just seems to have found a purple patch of form for Gold Coast trainer John Gilmore. This weekend Stephanie Thornton will ride him, and she has won on him previously. I think that he is the one to beat this weekend. He loves heavy tracks- undefeated in 3 starts on a heavy track and will be the one to beat for mine!

Dreamreacher (5) is trained by Gillian Heinrich and Ben Thompson will ride. He has won his past two starts and will settle near the rear of the field and probably be making a similar run at Profit (1). The weight differential should see him be right in the finish.

Smart Meteor (7) is super odds as well – he goes well for Jaden Lloyd and thrives on wet tracks – keep safe.

Selections:

4 – Sea Raider
5 – Dreamreacher
1 – Profit
7 – Smart Meteor
Rough chance – (2) Hail Manhattan

Race 7

With a ten-race program – this is the first leg of the Quaddie this weekend.

Go Wandji (12) resumes here with Larry Cassidy riding for Tom Dougall. He resumes here after a 17-week spell on a heavy track. I just think the assignment maybe too tough first up – I am sure if I am wrong Cassidy will have plenty to say when I run into him next Tuesday night!

Rich Lister (16) is trained by the dynamic duo of Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted with Jaden Lloyd in the saddle. She was great first up, and she doesn’t have a wonderful second up record. However, the first up run was enormous, and I think that she is set for a wonderful preparation.

Gollan Racing is well represented here as well. Mischief Managed (13) is second up here. Ryan Maloney in the saddle as well. I think that she is good value in this race and should be thundering home late.

Smart Image (5) resumes for the new stable. The gelding races well fresh and the recent trial would suggest that he will go well here – Jimmy Orman to ride.

The stable mate Liza With A Zee (6) is not without some hope as well.

Selections:

16 – Rich Lister
12 – Go Wandji
13 – Mischief Managed
5 – Smart Image
Rough chances – (6) Liza With A Zee

Race 8

The first leg of the treble.

It is a battle of the BOOMS! Which one will you back?

Really tough decision here to split them both – maybe just quinella them and collect!

Prince Of Boom (1) is trained by Robert Heathcote and looked well forward winning a recent barrier trial at Deagon. Jimmy Orman will partner him for the first time this weekend. His last preparation he ran well without winning. In saying that he raced against his stable mate Startantes who showed superb form last weekend in Sydney going down by an eyelash in a Group 1 race. He has some solid wet track form – goes well fresh and I think must be respected here.

Blackjack Boom (3) is trained by Edmonds Racing. Will settle probably four pairs back in the running and will be suited by the genuine tempo of the race with Robbie Fradd to ride. He has won both starts since resuming from a spell and has looked very good. He probably faces his toughest opposition in his career this weekend, however, I think he is progressive and should be there when the judge calls a halt to the race.

Amity Gal (19) is an emergency and is trained by David Vandyke. Will get into the field at this rate with some early scratchings. She has been unfortunate in the barrier draw being allocated barrier 17. Will have Ben Thompson aboard – does like to lead and set a solid tempo and does enjoy heavy tracks – she could be one at value to upset these more fancied runners.

Frosty Mango (8) from the Tony Golan yards just keep trying to win this preparation. Has put in some superb efforts and been beaten by narrow margins in her past three starts. Has had a freshen up and won a trial recently. She has run well on soft ground and normally races well fresh – some good odds on offer as well at $7 – Jim Byrne will ride.

The stable mate is Self Indulgent (6) – will be ridden by Samantha Collett and has been solid in each of her runs this preparation. Do not leave her out here.

Zuma California (10) was sent out a heavily backed favourite in the race won by Blackjack Boom (3) at the Sunshine Coast last time out. That was his first run from a spell. I think he will have derived a fair bit of benefit from that run and will strip fitter this weekend. Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride. $14 is silly odds for mine.

Selections:

3 – Blackjack Boom
1 – Prince of Boom
19 – Amity Gal
8 – Frosty Mango
Rough chances – (6) Self Indulgent & (10) Zuma California

Race 9

This race is a real lottery. There are several runners that could get the job done.

I am punting on the recent consistent form of Stuttering (12) trained by Robert Heathcote. I think the key to this gelding is he has drawn well – barrier 3 - and I think they have pulled the right rein by putting apprentice Wendy Peel aboard – her 3 kilogram claim brings this runner into serious contention. He will carry no weight on a heavy track (which he thrives on – 2 starts for 2 wins) and at $15 I really think he is a very good each way gamble.

Gogol (5) is trained on the Gold Coast by Les Kelly and has won his past two starts impressively. Boris Thornton won on him two starts ago here when he was heavily backed and got the money. Solid form on heavy tracks as well and drawn nicely he will be a serious contender here.

Racecourse Road (2) was run down in the final stride at the Sunshine Coast last time out. Very unlucky when beaten by a runner carrying less weight in the concluding stages. He has drawn a little wide in barrier 11 – but he jumps cleanly and gets into his rhythm so quickly I expect he will take up the lead and prove difficult to run down as usual. He loves wet tracks so that should assist him.

Tony Gollan has made a gear change this weekend with Run For Glory (9) with the winkers coming off and the blinkers going back on. He has won previously when he has had gear changes. They are betting $26 in some markets about this runner who is second up. He does represent serious value in this race, and he just seemed to run out of fitness first up. His second up efforts have always been very good – keep him safe and in your thoughts for your multiples and exotic bets.

The two Chris Waller Racing representatives must be considered – both have shown solid recent form and if they take their place in the field here could get into the placings – Sambro (3) and New Arrangement (7).

Selections:

12 – Stuttering
5 – Gogol
2 – Racecourse Road
9 – Run For Glory
Rough chances – (3) Sambro & (7) New Arrangement

Race 10

Ten races – the last race – hopefully the rain stays away, and the track can stand up to some of these large fields and conditions.

Tramonto (8) resumed last time out here and probably threw in one of his worst efforts of his career. It was reported he had respiratory issues after the race – so you can probably forgive that run. I see that Jonny Field has booked Jag Guthmann-Chester to ride him here this weekend. JAG has a superb strike rate on the gelding with seven rides for 3 wins and 3 seconds. He will get the best out of him here. If you can overlook the last start effort he looks well placed at the weights and in this grade. He has won on heavy tracks as well – keep your eye on him – hey have posted a stupid price of $7 – he is better than that in this grade.

Shamrock Lu (14) is flying now for Gollan Racing. He steps up to 1200 metres this weekend after winning two starts at 1000 metres. The way this race should pan out, with some speed in the race, should see him settle back in the field and if they are making ground late in these races, I can just see him storming home late out wide this weekend.

The stable mate, Ingear (16), resumes after a short let up. She does have an impressive first up record with 3 wins from 5 starts. Has drawn well on barrier 8 – Sam Collett will ride – a sneaky chance to get into the placings or even post a win at decent odds.

Montenegro Man (6) is a Kelly Schweida Racing runner who saluted at huge odds last time out here. To be fair the odds were ludicrous after his win the previous start at Ipswich. The stable has come for the claim with Kyle Wilson Taylor this weekend – I still think he is a serious contender.

Tumbler Ridge (1) resumes with a huge weight – could cause a major upset – keep him safe here. He is better than these on his best form. Just some concerns with the weight and the heavy surface.

Selections:

14 – Shamrock Lu
7 – Splendoronthegrass
6 – Montenegro Man
16 – Ingear
Rough chances – (1) Tumbler Ridge & (8) Tramonto
