RED WAVE BUMPS INTO A GOOD ONE BUT STILL CONTINUES TO REWARD HIS CONNECTIONS

The three-year-old gelding Red Wave has a special place in co-trainer Maddysen Sears’ heart and the son of Red Dazzler continues to reward his connections.
After his tremendous come from behind Metropolitan win at the Sunshine Coast in a QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap over 1600m on February 19, Red Wave’s next assignment saw him race in the same class, now 1kg up in the weights, and over the same distance as his previous win … but this time he was at Eagle Farm (on March 12).
There was a boom horse in the race. That was the unbeaten Gypsy Goddess who had won all of her previous four career starts (which included a Group 3 win in the Gran Prix) in exhilarating fashion and the general expectation was that it would be difficult to prevent Gypsy Goddess from continuing on her winning way.
It was no surprise then to see Gypsy Goddess start as a clearcut favourite at $2.05, but Red Wave was shown due respect on the betting boards being marked up as second favourite at $4.60.
As things turned out, the hype surrounding Gypsy Goddess proved to be justified as the favourite gave every runner a start and then easily beat them all home in the final run-in.
Given that Gypsy Goddess is now deemed good enough to be taken south a crack at Group 1 glory, it was certainly no disgrace to finish in the placings behind that runner and there was little to fault in Red Wave’s overall effort to claim third spot … a result which means he has now finished in the first three places in seven of his eleven starts.
