WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, APRIL 9
By Darren Winningham | Friday, April 8, 2022
Back at Doomben this weekend with the track rated “soft” and the rail is out 3 metres for the entire track. Maybe some showers for the weekend – let’s hope that we race on a better surface if the weather stays away.
A shout out to Jimmy Orman this week who rode four winners at Ipswich – a huge effort.
NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
The race is for the two-year-old runners.
Exposed form would suggest the Tony Gollan trained Nettuno (1) will be hard to beat with Ryan Maloney to ride. Won well on debut at the Sunshine Coast and should continue on his winning way here.
Titian Goddess (5) raced well on a heavy surface on debut at Doomben for trainer Danny Bougoure. I think that on a better surface here this filly could show some improvement. Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) will ride, and his claim will be of benefit.
Selections:
1 – Nettuno 5 – Titian Goddess 8 – Birdonawing 6 – Gerrymander
Race 2
The Gollan Racing runner Knight Mariner (9) has done everything right in three runs after a long period off due to injury. The mile at Doomben should see him run a bold race. He has a tremendous record and Stephanie Thornton will ride. He finished behind Slow Hands (1) last time out here when the track was heavy – we all know Slow Hands performs best in bog conditions.
Get The Idea (3) is trained on the Gold Coast by John Smerdon – will be ridden by Jaden Lloyd. He is third up this preparation and was defeated here last time out by Fifteen Rounds (8). He meets that runner much better at the weights this weekend for that defeat. I think that he will be solid and get the job done in this small field.
If the track deteriorates keep your eye on Slow Hands (1) he loves the wet.
Selections:
3 – Get The Idea 9 – Knight Mariner 1 – Slow Hands 6 – Tesarc
Race 3
Perfect Encounter (7) is trained by Lindsay Hatch and Jim Byrne will be in the saddle. The blinkers go on for the first time this weekend – I am hoping for an improved performance. He ran third in the race won by Star Gamble (1) last time out here on a heavy track. Gets a 3 kilogram turn around in the weights for that defeat – the gear change as well – a probable turn of the tables this weekend.
Star Gamble (1) won last time out here for the Kelly Schweida and Jimmy Orman team. A change in tactics which allowing the gelding to roll along in front unchallenged saw him win well. Not sure whether the weight will be an issue this weekend – but his last start effort would suggest he could win again.
Natalieann (9) won a Class 1 race at the Sunshine Coast last time out over the mile. She looks a progressive type – Samantha Collett retains the ride here this weekend – a rough chance down in the weights.
Selections:
7 – Perfect Encounter 1 – Star Gamble 9 – Natalieann 8 – Dazzling Flash
Race 4
Open field over 2020 metres. Tough affair especially if the track gets downgraded.
I am torn between two runners here - Isabella’s Spring (15) and Supergiant (3).
Isabella’s Spring (15) won last time out here on a heavy track for Barry Lockwood. Sam Collett retains the ride again this weekend. Not sure if the heavy track enhanced the winning performance as she does race best on wet surfaces.
In saying that the track looks like being damp this weekend – she goes up in grade – down in the weights and must be given a genuine hope.
Supergiant (3) from the Michael Costa Racing team on the Gold Coast just gives me the impression that he has been looking for this distance this time in. He had a 6-week let up between runs when he raced at the Gold Coast over 1800 metres. I think that he looked a little plump when parading – probably will strip fitter for that effort and Jimmy Orman will ride him this weekend. He hasn’t the most impressive career record to be fair – but maybe he gets conditions to suit here this weekend in a very open field.
Sayl (6) was impressive last weekend – run down in the shadow of the posts at Eagle Farm carrying a large weight. Has some solid form at this track and Andrew Mallyon will ride again this weekend for trainer Lindsay Hatch. He will be easy to find in the running as he is a big grey gelding.
Confusion (10) was beaten here by Isabella’s Spring (15) last time out. Meets her better at the weights here on a firmer track – maybe an improvement will be seen. Trained by Glenn Thornton and Stephanie Thornton will ride – keeping it in the family!
Selections:
3 – Supergiant 15 – Isabella’s Spring 6 – Sayl 10 – Confusion Rough chances – (4) Traduce & (5) Tavion Prince
Race 5
This race is over 1050 metres. There is a mountain of speed here – maybe something running on is the way to go.
Gollan Racing has a few solid chances in this race – Joyous Legend (3) and Putontheredlight (7) both are serious contenders. They both are resuming here, and both have been trialling well – a flip of the coin for which one to bet on.
Putontheredlight (7) had a solid preparation last time in. I think that despite drawing terrible in barrier 13 Stephanie Thornton can jump her out and sit back behind the speed and then thunder over the top of them.
Joyous Legend (3) has had a recent trial that she won well for her new stable. Ryan Maloney rode her in that trial and retains the ride for race day. She has drawn terrible too in barrier 16 – but, again, she will be able to settle midfield and work home late. She would have been my on top selection if she had drawn a barrier – any luck in running and she is the one to be gambling on at around $7.
Coco Rox (4) is trained by Matthew Dunn and resumes here. She loves to jump and run – drawn barrier 2 she should be able to get along and if something takes her on just take a sit. Jim Bryne will ride again. There has been some very good support for this runner since markets opened firming from $8 to $3.30.
Amity Girl (12) is trained by David Vandyke. She is another that goes fast – drawn barrier 1 – will get out and run fast – no weight on her back she is the bunny that they will all be chasing. She was a beaten short-priced favourite first up on her home track at the Sunshine Coast. She will need to improve here – but the drop in the weight will assist her.
Some rough chances to Most Dazzling (11) and In The Blink (16) who look well placed.
Oh – hold on – I nearly forgot – The Rattlesnake (15) – very little chance – just for you James Goves – just like your very sad and useless BRONCOS!
Selections:
7 – Putontheredlight 12 – Amity Girl 3 – Joyous Legend 4 – Coco Rox Rough chances – (11) Most Dazzling & (16) In The Blink
Race 6
Over the 1350 metres. First leg of the Quaddie!
Open field with many chances.
I have gone looking for some value in the Desleigh Forster runner Eelloh (16) to be partnered by Jim Byrne. She is second up here after what was a solid effort at Eagle Farm when resuming. I note that three of her four career starts have been on the Doomben track. I think that she is drawn well in barrier 6 and with solid second up form she looks appealing to me at $16. I think you can back her each way with a nice result.
Snitzify (12) and Rock Amore (5) are trained by Tony Gollan. Snitzify (12) resumed here after a six-week let up a fortnight ago and flashed home to run a solid third. Ryan Maloney will ride here.
Rock Amore (5) will be ridden again by Jimmy Orman. Was drawn wide first up and hasn’t fared well again with the barrier draw this weekend. First up he carried a huge weight – was forced to race wide and tired. In saying that, the run may have been a good pipe opener for him to race well here. He can perform well second up – keep safe.
Avowal (9) is trained by Lindsay Hatch and was heavily supported last weekend at Eagle Farm in the betting. He was never on the track and was forced to race wide throughout – the run was much better than it appears in the form guide – he opened at $14 and there has been some support seeing him firm into $9.50. He is drawn better this weekend in barrier 3 – I expect him to show a huge improvement.
Dash For Dreams (10) will be ridden by Larry Cassidy for Chris Munce. He won second up (last time out) at Ipswich when he jumped and controlled the race from the front and won. He will be competitive again here.
Siennas Choice (14) is one from the Kelly Schweida Racing team – his stable is having an exceptional run of luck presently. Tiffani Brooker will ride - is quoted at $41 in some markets. She resumed on a soft track at the Gold Coast first up – has good second up form – the 16 barrier is some concern but if the track gets into the “good” range she could run a bold race.
Some good value here – could be some serious value in your exotic bets.
Selections:
16 – Eelloh 12 – Snitzify 9 – Avowal 10 – Dash For Dreams
Rough chance – (5) Rock Amore & (14) Siennas Choice
Race 7
This is the first leg of the Treble this weekend.
Go Wandji (9) is trained by Tom Dougall and Larry Cassidy will retain the ride here this weekend. Resumed at Toowoomba and flashed home late to dead heat. I think back at Doomben this gelding will be better and should get the job done again in a tough race, but he has drawn wide in barrier 14 – I can find reasons for him to get beaten this weekend - $2.60 not for me!
I think one of the emergency runners who has got the run this weekend, Dixon Bay (18) is the one to beat – trained by Gillian Heinrich on the Gold Coast and to be ridden by Jaden Lloyd – his claim will be useful here. He resumed on the Gold Coast and was beaten by High Cost (1 – scratched) – that run was enormous. He is undefeated in two starts second up – I really think he ticks a few boxes here this weekend at $25.
Pull Anchor (7) and Charretera (6) are Gollan Racing runners – both have some chance. Pull Anchor (7) has some tremendous form on this track and has a serious record second up. Back to 1200 metres as well should see her work home late from a nice barrier – Stephanie Thornton will ride.
Aidensfield (12) was sent out a very short priced favourite last time here when defeated by Smart Image (Race 9 – number 10). The race I think was run fast and the form should stand up this weekend – just some concerns with this runner – third up here this weekend – never placed or won third up.
Park Avenue (24) is trained by Michael Freedman – was a solid effort third up at Canberra. Has drawn wide in barrier 15 – however, if he makes the field could be one at some silly odds.
Selections:
18 – Dixon Bay 9 – Go Wandji 7 – Pull Anchor 12 – Aidensfield Rough chances – (6) Charretera & (24) Park Avenue
Race 8
Dreamreacher (7) is trained by Gillian Heinrich and Jaden Lloyd will ride. Last time out at Eagle Farm he raced over the mile and was run down in the final bound. Back to 1350 metres, I think that he will be better suited – plus the month freshen up should see him race well. The solid tempo should see him be able to settle at the rear of the field and work home late. He thrives on fast paced races and gets home well.
Derulo (6) won impressively first up on Gold Coast – trained by Michael Costa. Has a solid second up record and gets conditions to suit this weekend again. A jockey change with Andrew Mallyon to ride. He gets his chance to win another race – he is again weighted well in this class. Some good support for this runner again – firming from $14 to $9.50 – keep your eye on any further movement in the markets.
The stable mate is Cracker Essgee (18) who is an emergency and may get the run here. He will be suited even better if we get rain and the track deteriorates.
Tony Gollan is well represented with Vinco (12) and Ulysses (15). Vinco (12) won second up at Toowoomba. I am not sure how he will race here. On that occasion he was heavily supported into favourite and got the job done. A jockey change this weekend with Ben Thompson suspended – Georgine Cartwright will take the ride.
Ulysses (15) won second up for his new stable here. The form out of that race should stand up and he has won twice here on the Doomben track. Tegan Harrison will ride him this weekend. He does get some solid tempo in the race and should be able to settle back in the field and then work home late.
Never No More (9) ran a great second to Ulysses (15) last time out. This weekend he meets him better at the weights but has drawn poorly in barrier 17.
Reloaded (2) is a Chris Waller Racing runner resuming here. Despite the weight he has raced in some better class races and maybe could race well fresh – do not underestimate his chances.
Selections:
7 – Dreamreacher 6 – Derulo 12 – Vinco 15 – Ulysses Rough chances – (2) Reloaded & (9) Never No More & (18) Cracker Essgee
Race 9
This race is a real lottery. There are several runners that could get the job done - 1200 metres dash.
Smart Image (10) was second up last start in a Class 3 race and settled at the tail of the field before Jimmy Orman shifted him out wide and then stormed home to go away on the line – it was some performance! This weekend he steps up to Class 6 grade and goes down in the weights. The speed will be on here again – he will be storming home late. Jimmy Orman will ride again – his sectionals last time out were insane – a repeat of that effort could see him grab another win.
Aheadofhistime (11) is trained on the mid-north Coast of NSW by Trevor Hardy. He has been putting some consistent efforts on the board at Grafton in his last four starts. Has carried some large weights – most of them around 60 kilograms - and he has been beaten in the final strides each time. He does come to Doomben – he does race against city company - but he goes down in the weights and the bonus is that Cejay Graham has been booked to ride. Her 3-kilogram claim will see him get into this race with a light weight – drawn the rail as well – he can race a few pairs off the speed. At $31 each way I think these are some seriously rude odds.
Dr Why Not (3) loves this track – 5 starts – 2 wins and 3 seconds. He has had a five week freshen up since his last effort at Toowoomba. Back onto a track where he has great form expect him to three pairs back in the running and finishing off late with jockey Michael Murphy riding. There will be some celebrations as he crosses the lines if he can win this race – be careful Michael the stewards may throw a fine at you!
Roman Aureus (1) is trained by Brian Wakefield and is another Doomben track specialist. Only out of the money once here in 14 starts. Adin Thompson will ride – he will need to work some magic from barrier 17. The gelding resumes from a nine week freshen up and always races well fresh.
Montenegro Man (5) and Explosive Quality (6) are not without some chance here either.
A tough way to finish off the day – IF the favourite doesn’t run a place – you will need a truck to take the money home with my selections!
Selections:
11 – Aheadofhistime 10 – Smart Image 3 – Dr Why Not 1 – Roman Aureus Rough chances – (5) Montenegro Man & (6) Explosive Quality ____________________________________________________________________
Jockeys Challenge
Tough weekend – there are many that have chances here. Jimmy Orman – Jaden Lloyd – Stephanie Thornton. I think Jaden may get home in a close battle.

WINNO V FLEMO
WINNO beat FLEMO last weekend – so let’s see what happens this weekend. We had a good weekend on the tip! FLEMO has driven to Birdsville this weekend for the races on Sunday and Monday so I will wait and see who I will take on! I think I will slaughter whoever I take on this weekend if my top selections win here!
Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
