WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, APRIL 16
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, April 14, 2022
Back at Eagle Farm this weekend with the track rated “good”. The rail is out 3 metres for the entire track. There is some rain forecast in the lead up – this will have little effect on the racing surface.
Last weekend was a blow out at Doomben. Some roughies got home late in the day. The Quaddie was not won and jackpotted – I have spoken to some astute punters that have been around Brisbane racing for many more years than me – they can never recollect a Quaddie pool in Brisbane jackpotting!
Let’s hope this weekend we can get some better results and replenish the wallets.
The Easter Bunny comes on Sunday morning – have a safe Easter and if you are on the roads – be safe!
NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day. _______________________________________________________________________
Race 1
We start the day with a two-year-old race over 1400 metres.
Kelly Schweida Racing has two well placed runners here. Tyresa (5) won last time out at decent odds. Looks like she will be able to go on with the job with a repeat performance – Mark Du Plessis will ride.
Honkytonk Diva (6) is the stable mate. Will be ridden by apprentice Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT). Won on a heavy track last time on the Gold Coast – to be fair the track was a bog. I think we may see some further improvement on top of the ground here this weekend – keep safe.
Wealthy Investor (1) is from the astute Damian Lane stables in NSW – has been racing in higher class races. Dropping back in class and will race better on a firm surface – if there is any money for this runner follow it in – this stable is renowned for some well targeted betting plunges. Jim Byrne will ride.
Selections:
5 – Tyresa 6 – Honkytonk Diva 1 – Wealthy Investor 3 – Green Shadows
Race 2
A distance race over 1815 metres. Average race.
Namazu (5) from the Risky Vale stables is the way I am going here. Has won his past two starts – Ryan Wiggins to ride. Will race handy and I think at the weights looks a great gamble.
Reggiewood (7) is from the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou yards in NSW. Has had his races well-spaced this preparation. He failed miserably last time out on a heavy track at Canterbury – didn’t go a yard in the wet conditions. Forget that run and go on his consistent efforts prior – he is a genuine contender here. Apprentice KWT takes his claim off his back as well – he does look well in at the weights and the conditions.
Cloak (7) is on the seven day back up. Got too far back last weekend – maybe ridden more forward this weekend – could be a rough chance – Brad Stewart will ride.
Selections:
5 – Namazu 7 – Reggiewood 2 – Cloak 1 – Star Of Michelin
Race 3
A distance race over 2400 metres – these are always a lottery.
Street Dancer (1) is trained by David Vandyke and will be ridden by Ryan Maloney. Is third up and has been very consistent since resuming. Despite the large weight I expect him to be difficult to beat here.
Lunasit (6) is trained by Barry Lockwood. She did race well here a fortnight ago over 2200 metres. The way she finished off the race would suggest that the extra distance will be no drama this weekend. Sam Collett will ride.
Rations (5) has a very good record at this track. Barry Baldwin trains this lightly raced mare. She looks at the 2400 metres for the first time. If she can run out the distance she is not without some hope.
Selections:
1 – Street Dancer 6– Lunasit 5 – Rations 3 – Savvy Oak
Race 4
A tough race here – the two-year-old runners again with a large field over 1000 metres.
Glamborgini (4) is trained by Chris Anderson and KWT has the ride – he has some nice rides early in this program! This filly put in a very good run on the Gold Coast in the Two-Year-Old Jewel a month ago. She got caught in the worst part of the track on that occasion. Probably should be considered a little unlucky. This weekend there shall be no excuses and she should just win.
Hyde (5) makes his debut in QLD for the Annabel Neasham yards. He was heavily supported in his debut back in December and then tipped out for a spell. Since then, he has had three trials – resumes here this weekend with the winkers going on for the first time. I think this Snitzel colt may show something here now that he has matured and if he can handle this Eagle Farm track he could cause and upset at decent odds – currently $9. Jaden Lloyd will ride. It could be Queensland’s leading two apprentices going at it stride for stride in the final 100 metres of this race – the question is – who will win?
Saweetie (9) is a Gollan Racing runner. Has placed in each of her two starts. She is racing consistently enough to fill a place with Stephanie Thornton riding her for the third time.
Accebar (1) is trained by Kristen Buchanan who seems to have based a team in QLD to attempt to avoid the wet tracks plaguing NSW presently. This gelding won in the final stride on debut at Newcastle on a heavy track. Prior to that run he had been trialling very well. Ryan Maloney will ride.
Selections:
4 – Glamborgini 5 – Hyde 9 – Saweetie 1 – Acceber
Race 5
A small field over 1500 metres. The final leg of the Early Quaddie as well. Hopefully we are still alive!
Festival Prince is trained by Matt Kropp. I think he needs a solid tempo in the race to really fly home late. This weekend he gets those conditions with General Dubai (9) set to lead and put some pace into this race. Last time out he flew home when beaten by Bullfinch (2). He meets that runner four kilograms better this weekend – surely, he can turn the tables on him here. Robbie Fradd retains the ride.
The runner that I am keen on to maybe cause an upset is Enterprise Prince (4) from the Mick Lakey yards and to be ridden by Brad Stewart again. Last time out – well where do I start? Got poll-axed at the start – then when he started to work into the race was subjected to more interference and then ran up the back of a wall of horses and just went to the line hard held – not tested at any stage. The run prior he finished very strong and was beaten narrowly at the track and distance. They have the rude odds of $9 up about this runner – he can win this race for mine.
Bullfinch (2) was superb winning here last time out for Chris Waller Racing. He franked the form of some solid NSW efforts and was well supported and won easily with Larry Cassidy in the saddle. They combine again here this weekend. The fact he has gone up sharply in the weights is my only concern.
General Dubai (9) is trained by Lauren Abbott and Jimmy Orman will ride – keep your eye on this runner – if he gets away with some cheap sectionals, he may just run them of their feet here.
Selections:
11 – Festival Prince 4 – Enterprise Prince 2 – Bullfinch 9 – General Dubai Rough chance – (1) Casino Mondial
Race 6
This is the first leg of the Quaddie. A BM72 class race over the mile.
Sienna’s Choice (5) is on the quick back up after racing last weekend at Doomben. She got too far back then and really had very little chance after that. The race was run at a slow tempo as well that doesn’t suit her. KWT rides her this weekend for his boss Kelly Schweida. With horses like Liability (11) and Oakfield Prince (9) engaged in the race I expect them to get along at a very serious clip.
In saying that there is a big chance that runners on the speed may have an advantage. The track sometimes plays that way here. IF that is the case then do not dismiss the chances of the Damian Lane trained Oakfield Prince (9). He is fourth up this preparation and despite some solid form on wet tracks hasn’t had the best of luck in his recent three starts. He comes out of some solid races at Newcastle and that form is strong enough to get away with this race. Ryan Maloney will ride, and he may just get along out in front and run the opposition into the ground.
Liability (11) is trained by Gillian Heinrich and will be ridden by Jaden Lloyd. He was beaten by 0.5 length in a blanket finish last time out behind Bullfinch (Race 5 – 2). If Bullfinch performs well in the previous race – you may just want to gamble on this runner.
Balmaurice (11) is trained by Rex Lipp & Nick Hahn. He is second up here – I think he may need one more run, but down on the minimum and with Jim Byrne to ride he may be ready to show up.
Always Sure (2) is from the Gary Moore yards in NSW. We haven’t seen many of Gary’s runners for a while up here. He must have picked this race out for this gelding and on his recent efforts on heavy tracks at Rosehill I would expect a marked improvement on the dry track at Eagle Farm – Jimmy Orman will ride.
Selections:
5 – Sienna’s Choice 9 – Oakfield Prince 11 – Liability 13 – Balmaurice Rough chance – (2) Always Sure
Race 7
The three-year olds over 1400 metres in the Daybreak Lover– a Listed Race.
Robert Heathcote Racing has Release The Beans (1) second up here at the set weights. He was very good first up behind Enterprise Pomme. Stormed home late over 1200 metres. Has won on this track – in fact has never been out of the money in five starts here with 2 wins and 3 thirds. I think the 1400 metres is right up his alley – Jimmy Orman retains the ride, and he has been heavily supported firming from $9 into $5.50 since the markets opened.
There are some interstate invaders here with some big wraps on them.
Let’s start with Green Belt (8) from the Victorian stables of Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr). This colt is undefeated in two career starts – both wins have been exceptional. Both wins over the mile and both times he has raced on the speed. He comes to QLD with some huge wraps on him – first up on the Eagle Farm track – drawn barrier 13 with some speed in the race – I am going to say at $2.30 he cannot win here first up! Here comes the egg on WINNO’s face! Larry Cassidy has the ride – he won’t miss my either. In fact, I am going to go one step further it is my LAY OF THE DAY! Another reason is that it is not the last race either – “Last Race Larry” has struck in the last two Saturday meetings.
I like the chances of the Chris Waller runner Cape Breton (4) who is second up here after a tough run first up in the Canberra Guineas where he was ridden along and tired late beaten just over 2.5 lengths by Flying Crazy (2). I expect that he will have taken some benefit from that run and with a freshen up he will be ready to go this weekend with Jim Byrne to ride. His previous win at Kensington over 1400 metres back in February was run in very good time with some good sectionals – he looks a great each way prospect for mine.
Flying Crazy (2), trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, didn’t handle the mile and the heavy track last time out in the Carbine (Group 3). He is better than that and should race well here with Brad Stewart to ride.
Now what about the Stuart Kendrick trained Menazzi (6). Last time out at Doomben didn’t handle the heavy going one bit. But still managed to fly home late and just get beaten – he did win here at his previous start – keep safe.
Selections:
1 – Release The Beans 4 – Cape Breton 8 – Green Belt 6 – Menazzi Rough chances – (2) Flying Crazy
Race 8
An Open race over 1000 metres – the TAB Ascot – Listed race.
There is some serious speed in this race – maybe look for something to fly home late.
Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted have the exciting Shooting For Gold (8) resuming here. He has had two very good trials for this first up effort. Down in the weights and on a track where he has posted 3 wins from 4 starts, I think that he will race well fresh with Jaden Lloyd to ride. With the speed on and down on the minimum he looks ideally placed in a race where he should just sit four pairs back and storm home late.
Written Beauty (6) resumes here for Chris Waller Racing. She always races well fresh, and I think that she will enjoy the speed in the race. She has had two solid trials as well – could be some great value in this race with Larry Cassidy to sit on her for the first time.
Esta La Roca (5) is from the Lloyd Kennewell stables. She has raced well in Listed and Group company. She won nearly a month ago at Moonee Valley when she sat off the speed and flew home late in the straight to go away winning with some authority – she is posted at $13 in some markets.
Simply Fly (12) is trained by Rex Lipp & Nick Hahn and will appreciate the drop in the weights and the lightning speed in this race. She likes to settle at the rear of the field and come home late. I think that I would have been a little more confident with her if she was second up over 1200 metres this weekend – but in saying that she will get the race run to suit her.
Zoustyle (1) carries a mammoth 60 kilograms due to the conditions of this race and is giving them all weight here. I am not saying he cannot win this race – he is an exceptional sprinter. He is trained by Tony Gollan and Brad Stewart will ride him again – a superb affiliation with this gelding for 9 rides and 8 wins. I just am concerned with the weight – barrier 11 and the others that may try and take him on early.
Mark Currie has Je Suis Belle (10) in the race with Taylor Marshall to ride.
Selections:
8 – Shooting For Gold 6 – Written Beauty 5 – Esta La Roca 12 – Simply Fly Rough chances – (1) Zoustyle & (10) Je Suis Belle
Race 9
The last race – over 1200 metres – BM80 – a tough way to go home with $$ to buy chocolates for the family.
I am going with a jockey – who is still an “ex-friend” after his horrible banter the other week about my luckless Bulldogs – in Michael “Muppy” Hellyer. He rides Rhythmic Pulse (6) for Grant Allard here. This runner raced last weekend at Doomben in the race won by More Sundays (the last race). I maybe off the mark here, but I have looked at the video several times now and this runner was held up badly in the running especially in the final 100 metres. I think he would have stripped fitter for that effort, and I do note his solid second up form with 5 starts for two wins and a third. Drawn well in barrier 1 – Muppy will just have to get him out into the centre of the track and not get caught on the rail in the straight. Some serious odds on offer as well at $21 – maybe – just MAYBE “Muppy” we will be friends again and the Easter Bunny may have some chocolate for you if you can get him home!
The added pressure of the enigma “Last Race Larry” poses a threat here as well with the Richard & Will Freedman trained On The Lead (4) who gets his second look at Eagle Farm this weekend. He was unlucky in his first up effort when he was bumped and unbalanced early and then struck interference around the 350-metre mark in the race. I think that cost him any chance of winning first up in QLD. This weekend with the added distance – stepping up from 1000 metres to 1200 metres probably will enhance his chances. “Last Race Larry” will be crowing for days if he can get the job done for the third week in a row!
Dusty Tycoon (5) is well placed in this race, also second up for Robert Heathcote – Leah Kilner will claim her 2 kilograms as well that makes her appealing. The mare races well here at the track and distance – do not discount her chances.
Sir Warwick (3) is unbeaten at Eagle Farm – two starts for two wins for trainer Jake Capewell. Jim Byrne will ride him again here. He can speed along or take a sit. He is second up at a distance that he thrives at – keep safe.
Tramonto (2) finally put in a solid run last time out her when beaten by Boomtown Lass. Maybe he has turned the corner and could continue with that improvement he showed – Jaden Lloyd will ride.
Selections:
6 – Rhythmic Pulse 4 – On The Lead 5 – Dusty Tycoon 3 – Sir Warwick Rough chance – (2) Tramonto _______________________________________________________________________
Jockey’s Challenge
Larry Cassidy, Jimmy Orman, and the two leading apprentices Jaden Lloyd and Kyle Wilson Taylor will all have their chance here. Every time I tip Kyle, he has an average day (sorry in advance mate) I really think he has some nice rides this weekend and could knock off Larry Cassidy and Jaden in a photo finish.

WINNO V FLEMO
The battle continues this weekend with WINNO and FLEMO. FLEMO was in Birdsville last weekend – I see that he has made the way back home over the past week. It will be great to see him back at the track and remind him how disgraceful his BRONCOS are going! He did a wonderful job out at Birdsville – hopefully we can find you some winners here this weekend. Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
