WINNO'S WINNERS: IPSWICH, JUNE 18

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, June 16, 2022

Off to IPSWICH this weekend for the featured Ipswich Cup, the Eye Liner and the Gai Waterhouse Classic. What a wonderful effort last weekend from Gai Waterhouse who trained her 150th Group One winner when Alligator Blood won the TAB Stradbroke (Group 1). A sensational effort!

The Ipswich track is rated “soft” and he rail is out 0.5 metres the entire course.

I am having a weekend at home on the couch watching this meeting – so I will be relatively brief.

NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

We start the day off with a sprint race for the two-year-old runners.

Tony Gollan has two runners here that command respect. Honey Pot (5) looks the best of them coming out of the Listed Bill Carter where she ran a solid race. Ryan Maloney will ride her again as she looks to break her maiden status.

Saweetie (8) will have Ben Thompson aboard. Has been racing consistently.

Rose of Shiraz (3) is trained by Gillian Heinrich and Anthony Allen will ride. Looks the likely leader and I think may be difficult to run down if she gets left alone in front. She won first up and has some ability.

Northern Express (2) is trained by Michael Nolan and Jaden Lloyd rides him again. He won last time out at this track over 1000 metres on a heavy surface. Sometime horses that have won here seem to excel – keep safe.

Selections:

5 – Honey Pot
3 – Rose of Shiraz
2 – Northern Express
8 – Saweetie

Race 2

A small field over 1350 metres.

The set weights lead me to the topweight Subterranean (1) trained by Matthew Dunn. Comes out of some recent runs in Group races and is third up and has won previously third up – has the master rider of Ipswich riding him – Jim Byrne. Great odds on offer at $5.

There has been good support in the markets for the Rob Heathcote trained Hamlet Von Snitzel (2) since the markets opened. The gelding has been racing well in the new stable and gets his chance to break through with apprentice Jaden Lloyd to ride.

Indiscreetly (5) resumes here after two recent trials for trainer Danny Bougoure. She was sensational last time in and won three of her four starts. Georgina Cartwright will ride. I think she may just need the run.

Selections:

1 – Subterranean
2 – Hamlet Von Snitzel
5 – Indiscreetly
6 – Berdini’s Girl

Race 3

The Provincial Stayers Cup over 2500 metres.

I Ponder (11) how Luke Tarrant will go wearing BLUE and getting this lightly raced impressive stayer home. I Ponder looks very progressive, and I think on the minimum he looks ideally placed. Last week Luke won the last race at Group 2 level – maybe with the prizemoney he got he may have ventured to the barber during the week to get a decent haircut – like those dreadlocks just must go bruh! That’s enough of what Luke would call “WINNO SMACK” talk – I just expect that the speed in the race will suit this runner and watch him storm home late with the light weight and win!

Accessory (2) has been racing consistently in this grade. Trained by Josh Sweeney and another solid ride for Jaden Lloyd. Winning form is good form – when a stayer is racing well you should probably follow them! He also has a solid record on this Ipswich track.

Read My Future (3) is trained by Annabel Neasham and has won his past two starts. Brodie Loy will ride him again. With only 8 career starts and 4 wins and a placing over distances – he probably looks the testing material.

Selections:

11 – I Ponder
3 – Read My Future
2 – Accessory
8 – Neptunes Choice

Race 4

A tough race over 1666 metres. Many chances here.

See Marie (4) has won here previously and has been racing consistently. Desleigh Forster trains this mare and Jim Byrne will ride her.

Without Thinking (12) is trained by Sheila Laxon and John Symons who could jag a race to race double if he can win this race with Luke Tarrant riding. I think you can safely overlook his runs on the heavy tracks and on top of the ground here looks well placed.

Jakama (6) steps up to the mile for the first time - trained by John Dann and to be ridden by Sam Collett. He did work home last time out well over 1300 metres at Toowoomba.

Olympic Class (7), trained by Michael Morrison, won at the Gold Coast over 1800 metres carrying a huge weight last time out. Apprentice Leah Kilner will ride and her 2-kilogram claim will come in handy.

Selections:

4 – See Marie
12 – Without Thinking
6 – Jakama
7 – Olympic Class

Race 5

A sprint over 1100 metres.

The David Vandyke pair look well placed here. Orbisyn (8) looks like he should jump and roll along in front with Jim Byrne to ride the gelding for the first time. This runner resumed on a heavy track at Doomben and did not handle the conditions. Has had a freshened up since that run and I expect will be better for that effort. Look for Jim Byrne to bounce him forward, set up the tempo and make it very difficult for the other runners to get past him in the final 100 metres.

Skins (2) is the stable mate and Ryan Maloney will ride. Has raced here well previously and I do not believe enjoyed the quick backup last time out when he was sent out a short price favourite on this track and failed on a heavy track. I think with the three weeks freshen up he will sprint well here and should be respected.

The Big Goodbye (6), trained by Robert Heathcote, bounced back to winning form last time out and could go on here with that winning form. Apprentice Leah Kilner will ride the gelding.

Goldsborough (5) resumes here from a 48-week spell. On his previous form he would destroy this field, however I'd just like to wait and see him win a race or run well first for Sunshine Coast trainer Gary Duncan. Ben Thompson has a wonderful record on this gelding. I think no matter what he does is this race you should follow him in a few weeks’ time when he probably will go around again on his Sunshine Coast track second up.

Selections:

8 – Orbisyn
2 – Skins
6 – The Big Goodbye
5 – Goldsborough
Rough chance – (7) Shamaton

Race 6

This is the first leg of the Quaddie. Another sprint over 1100 metres for the three-year-old runners.

There is some serious speed and I expect them to be flying home late. It could be an exciting finish with them spread across the track as this is a large field going into the race.

Uncommon James (5), trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted, had sensational form as a two-year-old. Has been gelded since his last start. He has had two solid trials and looks well place here with Ben Thompson to ride. He is an exciting type and if he returns to racing and his previous form he looks unbeatable in this race.

Coco Rox (6) Is trained by Matthew Dunn and has been running all around Australia looking for dry tracks. She normally likes to lead or race just off the speed and on this Ipswich track that should see her very competitive. Ryan Maloney will ride he and she has drawn handily in barrier 5. Look for a bold run.

The Chris Anderson trained pair look well placed in this race. I think that Nord Lyon (15) has the form to be difficult to beat in this race, especially with the lightweight that he will carry. He has drawn well in barrier 4 and must carry 52 kilograms with Taylor Marshall to ride.

Rubiquitous (1), the stable mate is undefeated in two starts from a spell. Has suffered by getting a heap of weight. A claim for apprentice Jaden Lloyd should offset the weight slightly. He is a class runner – but will he struggle on this tight turning track and with the speed that is in the race?

Miss Hipster (3) is a good each way chance that should not be overlooked.

Selections:

5 – Uncommon James
6 – Coco Rox
15 – Nord Lyon
1 – Rubiquitous
Rough chance – (3) Miss Hipstar

Race 7 TAB IPSWICH CUP (Listed)

The feature race this week over 2150 metres – a Listed. Race.

Chris Waller is over in England training Group 1 winners at Royal Ascot. Meanwhile his team is getting winners across Australia. Why not get a winner at Ipswich in the time honoured Ipswich Cup with their runner Our Intrigue (5) to be ridden by Larry Cassidy. Went back to the mile last time out and steps up to a more suitable distance for mine. He gets his chance here – will race handy and should be difficult to hold out.

Berdibek (1) steps up from 1800 metres to the longer distance and will be competitive. Is trained by John O’Shea and Jimmy Orman will ride him. He likes firm tracks and should get those conditions here – look for him to settle midfield and for Orman to come wide late and make one final sprint at them.

Bartholomeu Dias (3) stormed home last time out for Annabel Neasham and Jaden Lloyd. Was unwanted in the betting at $17 and got the chocolates. It will be interesting to see whether that was a fluke win or whether Neasham has got the key to this runner since he was transferred to him. His final sectionals were great when he won – if he finds that form here again, he will put this lot to the sword.

Talking about the sword – Swords Drawn (4) is a New Zealand runner trained by Shaun Ritchie and Colm Murray and will be ridden by Samantha Collett. This runner has been smashed in the betting since the markets were posted firming from $21 into $9. He has not been seen since a solid effort in the Gold Coast Cup six weeks ago. The jockey on that occasion suggested that he may go better on a firm surface.

Tavion Prince (9) is trained by Tony Gollan. I think will be better placed in this race with the extra distance and Stephanie Thornton will ride him. The $26 is over the odds for this runner.

Selections:

5 – Our Intrigue
1 – Berdibek
3 – Bartholomeu Dias
4 – Swords Drawn
Rough chance – (9) Tavion Prince

Race 8 THE EYE LINER

Another one of our feature races over 1350 metres at Listed level.

I think a roughie will win the race this year. This race does have a history of turning up some odd results.

Mark Currie (Grandad) – he is looking a little old and frail recently! Currie trains Barney’s Law (14) who is posted at $26 and Taylor Marshall will ride him again. Marshall has a tremendous record aboard this gelding – 7 rides for 2 wins and 3 placings. He has won here previously and will be suited by the fast pace of the race. Probably gets to sit three pairs back behind the speed and then make his bid late.

Gollan Racing has Palladas (15) going around with Jim Byrne to ride. Has a solid record at the track as well and I expect that, coming off some Carnival runs, he will be suited here down on the minimum – Jim Byrne will ride.

At Witz End (11), trained by Owen Glue, won on this track last year. It is a huge ask to win first up in this race, however, he has a tremendous strike rate – a recent solid trial as well and Tegan Harrison will ride him here. He probably will be better second up – but I think he could fill a place at huge odds, currently around $51.

Holyfield (3) is trained by Annabel Neasham – she could win both feature races with any luck on her side! This gelding will be ridden by Brodie Loy who has ridden him in three starts for two wins. He did race in the BRC Sprint (Group 3) last time out and finished just behind Alligator Blood (who went on to win the Group 1 Stradbroke last week). That form is solid for this race. He has one problem - barrier 16. If he gets caught wide, he will need some luck.

Charleise (6), trained by Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, resumed at Flemington over 1200 metres in a slowly run race and still managed to work home late and finish on the heels of the winners. Stepping up in distance here she could win this race – Stephanie Thornton will ride.

Selections:

14 – Barney’s Law
15 – Palladas
3 – Holyfield
6 – Charleise
Rough chance – (11) At Witz End

Race 9 THE GAI WATERHOUSE

The last race over 1200 metres at Listed level.

Juan Diva (2) will be ridden by Jim Byrne – trained by Will & Richard Freedman. She comes off a series of solid efforts in her past two starts in races at Listed level. She looks ideally placed here and she could win her first race in QLD.

Tahitian Dancer (5) is a Gollan Racing runner who has been flashing home late in her past two starts and just missing. Ryan Maloney rides here and when he rides for this stable, he has an amazing strike rate of 26%. Just hope that she can get a clear run at them here on this narrow track late.

The stable mate is Pull Anchor (11) – she gets back in her races and surges home late. There is some good speed in this race, and she could post a win here. She is down in weight and up in grade. She will have Ben Thompson aboard – she has never placed in three starts at this track.

Centrefire (9) is a Munce Racing runner. The stable won the last race at Eagle Farm last week. I wonder if they can get another winner up in the last race here at Ipswich. Samantha Collett will ride the mare. To be fair, she has a reasonable chance of upsetting the more favoured runners in the race.

Selections:

2 – Juan Diva
5 – Tahitian Dancer
9 – Centrefire
11 – Pull Anchor

Jockeys Challenge

Jim Byrne, Ryan Maloney, and Jaden Lloyd have some nice rides. I think that local “KING” of Ipswich Jim Byrne could get the job done here.
