WINNO'S WINNERS: SUNSHINE COAST, JULY 2. 2022
By Darren Winningham | Friday, July 1, 2022
We’re off to SUNSHINE COAST this week where the meeting features the Caloundra Cup, the Winx Guineas, and the TAB Glasshouse.
At the time of writing the track is rated “Good” and the rail is true the entire course … but, with heavy rain forecast over the next couple of days, so it would appear unlikely that it will stay that way. It will pay to keep your eye on the weather.
The local horses generally have some good luck on their home track – so keep your eye on them – plus the local stable like a good plunge – they seem to land a few over the years.
I am having a weekend at home on the couch watching this meeting, so I will be brief.
NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day. _____________________________________________________________________
Race 1
We start the day with an 1800 metre race. It is a very open affair with several genuine chances.
Jakama (8) won last time out at Ipswich – looks well placed here with the extra distance looking very suitable. Sam Collett will ride the gelding.
Badoosh (9), trained by Matthew Dunn, has Nash Rawiller riding. He should be better placed on this more forgiving Sunshine Coast surface and has a win and a second in only two starts here. I think he represents great value.
Bentayga (14) is an ex-New Zealand runner now third up for Chris Waller Racing – Jim Byrne to ride. Looks like he has been screaming out for this distance. His two starts in QLD would suggest that he will be handy on the pace and difficult to hold out here.
Without Thinking (15) gets back to his home track. He is fourth up where he is well placed. Luke Tarrant will ride, and I think that he will need some luck as he settles towards the rear of the field and sprints late. He will also need a solid tempo to post a win here.
Selections:
8 – Jakama 9 – Badoosh 14 – Bentayga 15 – Without Thinking Rough chances – (2) Barade & (5) Fast Talking
Race 2 PROVINCIAL SPRINTERS SERIES FINAL
A large field over 1200 metres.
Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted train Red Rubi (11) with Boris Thornton to ride. Won first up a month ago after a freshen up at a midweek meeting at Doomben – is well placed here and gets in well at the weights.
Foreign Territory (4) is trained here by Natalie McCall and Jimmy Orman will ride. Won here first up before failing over 1400 metres – is back in distance, however I think the 1200 metres is more his go and drawn well, will race handy does represent super value around the $16.
Renouf (12) is trained on the track by Paul Jenkins and Larry Cassidy will ride. There has been some very good support since markets opened with this runner firming from $12 to $8.50.He loves this track and will get the run of the race.
Bonaparte (5) is trained on the track by Stuart Kendrick and has Robbie Fradd in the saddle. They combined here last time out to win at a Sunday meeting. Steps up in class, but must be respected.
Festival Prince (6) is not without a rough chance.
Selections:
11 – Red Rubi 4 – Foreign Territory 12 – Renouf 5 – Bonaparte Rough chance – (6) Festival Prince
Race 3
A small field over 1000 metres.
Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted have Kingston Here (5) resuming with Jaden Lloyd to ride. Has won here and first up and loves this distance. Looks ideally placed by this astute stable.
Goldsborough (8) is trained here by Gary Duncan – had a two week freshen up and looks well placed. Ben Thompson will ride him, and he loves this track and distance. Since the markets have opened, he has been well supported.
The Move (2) resumes here for Tony Gollan. Has been trialling well and may be under some pressure if the rain comes and the track is wet. Keep this in consideration when assessing the chances of this runner. Nash Rawiller will ride.
Eloquently (6) is a Steve Tregea runner who will be ridden by Anthony Allen – she could cause a major upset here.
Selections:
5 – Kingston Here 8 – Goldsborough 2 – The Move 6 – Eloquently
Race 4
A tough race over 1000 metres. Many chances here with the three-year-olds in action.
Think it could be a rough result here. Les Ross Racing has Mishani Sniper (10) resuming after a recent barrier trial win with Taylor Marshall in the saddle. He normally races well fresh and, despite drawing wide in barrier 14, I think he is terrific value at $10. Plus, he carries those winning NSW sky blue silks!
Oriental Princess (13) is at $51 in some markets – trained on the Gold Coast by Gillian Heinrich and Samantha Collett will ride. She resumed at Ipswich and looked like she may have needed the run, however, in saying that she was caught wide, and, given that run, she probably was entitled to fade late. She has won here – keep safe at these huge odds.
Shajaea (11) is trained by Sheila Laxon and John Symons with Luke Tarrant riding. Has drawn wide – that is some concern to me – he will need some luck from barrier 15.
Lime Soda (12), trained by Mark Currie, is third up here. Posted a win last time out at the Gold Coast and has drawn wide as well – Kyle Wilson Taylor will need to get some luck in the running.
The topweight Conglomerate (1) has a huge weight with Nash Rawiller to ride for Sears Racing. Has drawn well to ping the gates and take up a forward position and may just keep going late.
Selections:
10 – Mishani Sniper 13 – Oriental Princess 12 – Lime Soda 11 – Shajaea Rough chance (1) Conglomerate Race 5 BRUCE MCLACHLAN CLASSIC
A sprint over 1000 metres for the two-year-old runners.
Pomade (4), trained by Kris Lees, made a dramatic debut, winning at Doomben back in January. He then failed to fire at Randwick and since has been gelded. I just keep going back to that win at Doomben and, if he can reproduce that form, he will be hard to beat here – Nash Rawiller will ride.
Spiritualised (6), trained by Tony Gollan, won a maiden race here a fortnight ago. Drawn wide – may need some luck from barrier 16 – Jim Byrne to ride. Maybe he can post consecutive wins at the track.
Lee Freedman they say has good taste in his horses. His runner Champagne Tastes (15) won on at her second start on the Gold Coast then was sent for a spell – has had two solid trials and looks ideally drawn in barrier 8 to sit three pairs back in the running to get a solid run with Brodie Loy to ride.
Adam Campton Racing has a solid chance with Catwalk Criminal (14) to post his first Saturday metropolitan winner – Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride for him. His filly is second up in this race after winning well on debut. I think that they may need to let some of these other runners go here and take a sit, but she is a genuine chance, and it would be wonderful to see Adam win this race.
It is an open field with many chances.
Selections:
4 – Pomade 6 – Spiritualised 15 – Champagne Tastes 14 – Catwalk Criminal Rough chance – (5) Rose of Shiraz & (12) Spirit Of Milan
Race 6 CALOUNDRA CUP
This is the first leg of the Quaddie. The 2022 Caloundra Cup over 2400 metres.
Bartholomeu Dias (5) is trained by Annabel Neasham with Brodie Loy to ride. The run in the Ipswich Cup was better than it appears on paper. Got too far back and worked home nicely late – I think that on this wider, bigger track he will get a nice run-in transit and plenty of space to let down late.
Le Don De Vie (2) has some solid form and I think he resented the Eagle Farm track in the Q22 a month ago. He is better than that and, with the freshen up and the softer track, I expect him to perform better here with Nash Rawiller to ride.
Alakahan is trained by Will & Richard Freedman and Larry Cassidy will be aboard. I think that this runner really does not like wet tracks. Despite this, he has been solid in his recent efforts. If the rain stays away and the surface is not rain affected this weekend, I think he has well placed by the Freedman team in this race. He has had a four week freshen up and a trial to get him ready and he could be one to follow moving forward in a race like the Grafton Cup if they elect to go there after the result here.
London Banker (4) is trained by Kelly Schweida and Jimmy Orman will ride. The gelding is on the quick back up after a very good win last week at Eagle Farm. He showed his form of last preparation there, settling down and then sprinting fast at the end of the race to slay last week’s opposition. He has drawn wide in barrier 17 – but he should be able to get across and be three pairs back behind the leaders. Only one reservation – he is not a fan of wet tracks.
Street Dancer (12) is trained on the track by David Vandyke – could be one at odds to upset the more favoured runners.
Selections:
9 – Alakahan 5 – Bartholomeu Dias 2 – Le Don De Vie 4 – London Banker Rough chance – (12) Street Dancer
Race 7 WINX GUINEAS (Group 3)
The Guineas over a mile. A great field.
Battleton (2) is a Bjorn Baker Racing runner with Nash Rawiller to ride. When looking at Nash’s rides in the three feature races – it is possible for him to win them all! This runner was solid last time out when he ran second to Kiss Sum over the mile at Eagle Farm. I think, based on that effort, he looks the one to beat. He is only lightly raced and looks progressive.
Whitewater (4) is trained here by David Vandyke and is on the quick back up after winning last week at Eagle Farm over the mile at Class 3 level. Stepping up in grade, however, his sectionals last week were solid enough to suggest he will be competitive.
Indiscreetly (10) is trained by Danny Bougoure and Mark Du Plessis will ride her. She was sent out favourite first up at Ipswich and knocked up late after leading. She will strip fitter for that effort and commands respect in a race like this where she should jump from barrier 2 and lead this field. She has won at the mile.
Notions (13) is another runner from the Will & Richard Freedman team that has been sent north looking to get a black type win. She won last time out at Goulbourn in restricted grade. She powered to the line late and that suggests the mile will be no trouble here. She is nice odds at $26 and could maybe upset the more favoured runners.
Subterranean (1) is a last start winner at Ipswich over 1350 metres with Brodie Loy to ride for Matthew Dunn Racing. At the set weights he is well in – keep safe.
Selections:
2 – Battleton 4 – Whitewater 10 – Indiscreetly 13 – Notions Rough chance – (1) Subterranean
Race 8 THE TAB GLASSHOUSE
Another one of our feature races over 1400 metres at Listed level.
Holyfield (3) is trained by Annabel Neasham. The gelding will be ridden by Brodie Loy who has ridden him in four starts for three wins. He won the Ipswich Eye Liner last time out in an emphatic performance when he led all the way and was too good. I think he may take a sit and sprint late as he does meet several of these runners worse at the weights for that win. He could take out the two provincial sprints in QLD if he can claim this win.
Desert Lord (4) could be the silent assassin here for this race, He is trained here by David Vandyke and Ryan Maloney rides. The seven-year-old gelding really needs the pace on to finish off strongly. He gets these conditions here with some leaders bound to set up the race for him by running at a solid clip. He is around the $6 mark and really thrives at 1400 metres. The larger track will assist him in winning this race as he got no luck late at Ipswich.
Charleise (10), trained by Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, resumed at Flemington over 1200 metres in a slowly run race and still managed to work home late and finish on the heels of the winners. Then got too far back in the Eye Liner at Ipswich. Forget that run and I expect a sharp improvement in this race with the blinkers going on – Kyle Wilson Taylor gets his chance to post a feature race win with the ride.
Dzsenifer (11) is trained on the track with Taylor Marshall to ride. Loves this track and distance – rule a line through his last start – has drawn terrible in barrier 23, but could cause an upset with any luck in running.
Bullfinch (21) didn’t handle the mile last time out if he makes the field look for a bold showing at his pet distance of 1400 metres with no weight and Larry Cassidy aboard.
Buffalo River (1) despite the weight should not be overlooked. He didn’t fire in the Stradbroke (Group 1) last time out. He is better than that performance. He played up at the start, was vetted pre-race and then reared in the gates and basically took no part in the race. His normal pattern of racing is to be handy or leading in his races. From barrier 13 look for Jim Byrne to bounce him out and be positive going into the first turn and have him prominent in the running.
Selections:
4 – Desert Lord 3 – Holyfield 1 – Buffalo River 10 – Charleise Rough chances – (11) Dzsenifer & (21) Bullfinch
Race 9
The last race – over 1400 metres – by now the lights will be on and the track illuminated.
The Tony Gollan Racing pair look like they will fight out the last race. I would like to be in the car on the way home with the husband-and-wife team of Ben Thompson and Stephanie Thornton. They are riding the two chances. I suppose it would go like “ner – ner – beat you – outrode you – oh and PS – your shout for dinner on the way home”!
They have both drawn wide and may need a little luck in the running, however, they usually race midfield and finish their races off. They both come out of the Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich a fortnight ago and I think that the track conditions and the tight turning track did not really assist either of them. I am looking for a dramatic improvement in this race which is only a BM78.
I like Glitter Strip (13) to be ridden by Ben to win the race – sorry Stephanie – seems like you are buying dinner!
She has been racing consistently without much luck. I think that she will peel out wide or make her run on the crown of this track and be storming to the line late. At $9 good value.
In saying that I expect Stephanie to have Love Sensation (14) trailing Ben everywhere in the running and she may have the last crack at them as they hit the line. This runner is now third up for the new stable and, so long as the track is not rain affected, she could be the big improver. Solid each way bet at $12.
They are both tremendous odds and you can back each of them each way for mine. I really should bracket them both to win – in the end it may just come down to the track conditions. If the rain stays away, I will probably swap to Love Sensation (14).
Tycoon Evie (3) is trained by Nick Hahn & Rex Lipp. She just seems to be getting better with each run this preparation. Despite the huge weight she is a classy mare that must be respected here. They went forward on her last time out in the race at Ipswich – I think she is better ridden more quietly – however, she will get conditions here where she can be placed with cover and sprint late – Jimmy Orman who rides this track exceptionally well has the ride.
Morethannumberone (2) is another Annabel Neasham runner with Brodie Loy to ride. They look like they could have a huge day on paper! Last start winner here at the track and distance and despite drawing barrier 17 has every opportunity to post consecutive wins. Just think at $3 he is too short for me.
Keep safe Moonan Me (11) who is resuming and may sprint well fresh for Brian Smith with Larry Cassidy aboard. A trial three weeks ago was just a pipe opener. He does love this track and distance and has a solid first up record – silly odds at $26.
If the rain comes maybe have something on Tavis Town (12) who thrives in the wet and is around $41.
Selections:
13 – Glitter Strip 14 – Love Sensation 3 – Tycoon Evie 2 – Morethannumberone Rough chance – (11) Moonan Me & (12) Tavis Town (wet) ________________________________________________________________________
Jockeys Challenge
Tough day – there are many that have chances here. Jim Byrne, Ryan Maloney, Brodie Loy, and Nash Rawiller have some nice rides. I think that since NSW are on a roll, I will place Nash Rawiller on top!

WINNO V FLEMO
The battle continues with WINNO and FLEMO. WINNO won last week with a solid effort between us both. Then Sunday rolled in and NSW smashed QLD in Perth – State of Origin is now 1 all with the decider in QLD! I am a little concerned this weekend – this is FLEMO’s home track – he has the added advantage of local knowledge.
Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
