The well-being of Leah Kilner, and her crucial fight for recovery from the critical injuries she suffered during a fall at Grafton on Sunday, remains first and foremost in the consciousness of the entire racing fraternity at this time.
As has so often been documented, race riding is a high-risk profession but, prepare as you might for the reality that things will go badly on occasions, the randomness of the strike when it happens is still always a numbing experience … and so it was with Kilner’s fall on Sunday.
The volume of well-wishes and thoughts and prayers for Kilner and her family must have gone close to overloading social media … such was the explosion of the collective, committed support base for the young rider.
As things stand at the time of writing, Kilner is in an induced coma after undergoing surgery on Sunday night to relieve pressure on the brain.
It is expected that we will find out more details of Kilner’s condition and prognosis in the coming days.
