WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 9, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Friday, July 8, 2022
DOOMBEN this weekend with the track rated “heavy”. The rail is out 0.5 metres. There is some sunlight around – but I think we will be still looking for mudlarks! But with fine weather for the remainder of the week we should be racing – but will we get through ten – yes ten massive races!
Best wishes to Leah Kilner as well – injured in a horrific fall last weekend at Grafton. A huge shout out to the unsung heroes as well – the emergency services and the CAREFLIGHT chopper and the medical crew who treated her. Our emergency services do not get many praises, but they are always they when we need them most!
I must be brief this week as I prepare to head for the GRAFTON CARNIVAL is upon us! I will be reporting live from the track across the Carnival.
NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
We start the day off with a sprint race over 1050 metres.
Tough race - hard to get a winner here but I like Dragon Miss (5) to win with Jim Byrne to ride for John Thomas. A solid effort last time out in the Listed Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich looks the best form line for this race. She has solid form on wet tracks as well.
Be Water My Friend (14) loves wet tracks as well. Second up here looks well placed.
One Shy Ruby (11), trained by Chris Anderson, drops back in distance this run – I think that will assist her chances of posting a win. She has solid form on all wet surfaces. Luke Tarrant to ride.
Maya Bay (10) looks well placed as well with Jaden Lloyd to ride. He is first up for Sears Racing – could sprint well.
Selections:
5 – Dragon Miss 14 – Be Water My Friend 11 – One Shy Ruby 10 – Maya Bay
Race 2
The two-year-old runners over 1350 metres.
Hattusa (3) from the queen of the Gold Coast Helen Page’s yards has won her past two starts on a heavy track. Maybe she can find a way to win again here this weekend with Tiffani Brooker aboard.
Selections:
3 – Hattusa 6- Minks Star 4 – Dealing’s Done 5 – The Vowels Rough chance – (4) Roman Aureus & (15) The Big Goodbye
Race 3
Let’s just bill this race as the Battle of The Leading QLD apprentices – Jaden Lloyd versus Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT).
I think the edge may go to The Kewess (9) with the pull in the weights here with KWT aboard to just pip the more fancied Alpine Edge (1) to be ridden by Jaden. Alpine Edge (1) comes back from Group races where he has acquitted himself very well and should not be taken lightly.
Selections:
9 – The Kewess 1– Alpine Edge 2 – Subterranean 6 – Hamlet Von Snitzel Rough chance – (11) Bezique
Race 4
Like the Tony Gollan pair here.
I think we may have the best medicine by backing the lightly raced Vaccine (9) who won first up after a long break at Doomben. I just think that down in the weights she could get the job done – Larry Cassidy – the birthday boy – I hear he celebrated in style earlier in the week (WINNO didn’t get an invite) – HAPPY BIRTHDAY “Last Race Larry!”
Tilianam (2) is the stable-mate who won also last time out at Eagle Farm very impressively. Jim Byrne will ride.
Selections:
9 – Vaccine 2 – Tilianam 1 – Rhapsody Rose 6 – Giulia Rough chance – (4) Boomtown Lass
Race 5
A class 6 1200 metre race which has been decimated by early scratchings.
Tumbler Ridge (5) looks silly odds for mine at $12. He is second up with Jaden Lloyd aboard at the Doomben track where he just motors. Great odds - I will be backing him.
Goldsborough (7) is on the quick back up after a win on his home track last weekend at the Sunshine Coast - on a heavy track. Taylor Marshall will ride.
Keep Safework (11) in your multiples here – produced a very good effort after a let up at $26 when narrowly defeated by a very good horse in Uncommon James.
Selections:
5 – Tumbler Ridge 7 – Goldsborough 11 – Safework 3 – The Big Goodbye
Race 6
Last leg of the Early Quaddie with a ten-race program.
The Munce Racing trained Delyth (16), down on the minimum with a run and a win under her belt, may be the way to go here – fitness may play a part in the damp conditions. Mark Du Plessis will ride.
Respect for the Tony Gollan Racing pair – Sweet Sixteen (13) who resumed for the new stable six weeks ago and looked like she had plenty of improvement in her. Jim Byrne will ride … and another newcomer to the Gollan yards is Proper Rogue (3), a winner of a recent trial who resumes from a 27-week break for the new stable. LOVES wet tracks – Jimmy Orman aboard – much respect.
Selections:
16 – Delyth 13 – Sweet Sixteen 3 – Proper Rogue 5 – Danezel
Race 7
The first leg of the Quaddie – the Darby McCarthy Plate. Some nice types engaged here.
Uncommon James (4) looks to post consecutive wins after a resounding return to racing at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago. This weekend the Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted trained gelding will be ridden by Brodie Loy. Look he is a nice type – but $1.90 is short for mine – I think I would be more comfortable with the price if the track gets into the SOFT range.
In saying that there is nothing wrong with the last start effort of Miss Hipstar (7) from the Kelly Schweida yards who was held up at a vital stage in the running at Ipswich. She flashed home to just get beaten. The smaller field here will suit, and Larry Cassidy will ride her again. She does love rain affected tracks as well.
Selections:
4 – Uncommon James 7 – Miss Hipstar 1 – Kallos 3 – Rubiquitous
Race 8 XXXX Chief De Beers
One of the feature races on the program. Unfortunately, it has been destroyed by scratchings.
The Chris Munce trained Centrefire (7) is well placed here and gets in extremely well at the weights. Samantha Collett will ride. Last start winner in the Gai Waterhouse (listed) at Ipswich with an exciting all the way win. She will lead them again her and will surely be hard to hold out.
The runner I think that could upset them all is the Gollan Racing trained Tahitian Dancer (9) who gets back in her races and flies home. With the small field I really think that she is a wonderful chance to win this feature race with Jim Byrne to ride. She had no luck last time out at Ipswich – forget that run and her previous effort in the Coughlan would suggest that she can win this – good odds as well with $9 on offer.
Mr Mosaic (2) has come up from NSW to try and win this feature race. I think he will need the track to be on the better side of “soft” to be competitive, however, do not overlook his chances.
Selections:
7 – Centrefire 9 – Tahitian Dancer 2 – Mr Mosaic 5 – Simply Fly
Race 9 Pam O’Neill (Group 3)
Another feature race - over the mile.
I was stiff last weekend when I was run down late when I backed Dzsenifer (3) on the Sunshine Coast. It’s on quick back up and Taylor Marshall to ride again. Not a heavy track like last weekend, I would expect that he will be better here although by race 9 the track could be chopped up. He always runs super at Doomben.
Charmmebaby (2) thrives as well on wet tracks. She went around in the Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara last time out and was not disgraced. She races best at the mile and on a soft surface – Kyle Wilson Taylor rides for Lawrie Mayfield-Smith and this runner commands serious respect.
Zing (13) from the Chris Waller yards comes from Sydney with some runs under her belt. I have always thought she races better on soft surfaces – at $21 she represents wonderful value – Samantha Collett will ride.
Narrated (19) is a last start winner at Canterbury on a very heavy track. That was in restricted grade, however, is trained by the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace team. I always remember Maher telling me his horses race better at Doomben when they come up here – well here is the perfect opportunity to test that statement! Brodie Loy will ride and, despite barrier 16, I think that she will work forward from the start and take up a prominent position in the running. She may just hold them all out late as well – massive odds at $15.
Selections:
3 – Dzsenifer 2 – Charmmebaby 13 – Zing 19 – Narrated Rough chance – (4) She’s The Gift
Race 10
The last race – then I am packing up my bags and getting ready for GRAFTON 2022!
Just box my trifecta and first 4 and head to Grafton CASHED UP!
I have gone wide and looked for some value.
Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted could finish the day on a winning note with Ocean Treaty (12) at $31 with Jaden Lloyd riding. The mare races well here and will appreciate the wet track – normally goes better second up, but I think she may just sprint well and get the job done late.
Strange Charm (11), trained by Kris Lees and with Jim Byrne aboard, could pop into the placings as well at around $31. Has had a freshen up and does race well fresh.
Love Sensation (13) ran well in the Gai Waterhouse last time out for Gollan Racing – Samantha Collett will ride here. I think she gets in well here at this 1350 metre distance that should be right up her alley.
Wham (2) could do exactly that and WHAM BAM – cause chaos in the race and win first up here for Lindsay Hatch. Michael Cahill rides the gelding who loves this circuit and wet tracks – he is first up, but he has a habit of sprinting well fresh – huge odds as well at $35 in some markets.
GOOD LUCK here!
Selections:
12 – Ocean Treaty 11 – Strange Charm 13 – Love Sensation 2 – Wham Rough chances – (3) Skins

WINNO V FLEMO
The battle continues this weekend with WINNO and FLEMO. WINNO won last weekend but it was really a lousy effort between us both. The battle continues Wednesday night as well with the QLD team doing battle with NSW in the decider at Suncorp Stadium. They are NO CHANCE – go NSW – and next weekend Fleming can wear the NSW SCARF OF SHAME!
Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
