WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 23, 2022

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, July 21, 2022

DOOMBEN this week. The track is rated “Soft” and the rail is out 2.5 metres. There is some rain forecast in the lead up – this could see a deterioration in the track rating – keep your eye on the track rating closer to race day.

The shame of last week having to wear a filthy QLD jersey and scarf – however, I am a man of my word I did lose the bet to James Goves – it seemed to make several people at the track happy for me to be in the maroon colours for the day! Even Josh Fleming has plenty to say from his ivory tower! Dear James – payback will be a bitch in 2023!

Anyway, we will put 2022 State of Origin in the history books and look forward until next year!

Onto the races this week.

NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
_____________________________________________________________________

Race 1

We start the day off with a no metro win race over 1200 metres. A massive field.

Let’s just forget the last start effort of Dragon Miss (4) when she drew wide and had no luck - was caught wide the entire way and was entitled to tire late. With the claim for Wendy Peel here, and drawn well, I like her to show a much better effort.

For My Annie (1), trained by Lindsay Hatch and to be ridden by Jimmy Orman, has been knocking on the door. A solid effort last time out over the 1050 metres – I think the step up in distance will suit here.

Alpha Go (6), trained by my mate Tony Newing at Gosford, will be ridden by Matt McGuren. A massive run at Grafton last time carrying a huge weight. Up in distance here – I just hope the track stays in the soft range. This gelding will be belting home late – keep safe at good each way odds.

Shazz ‘N’ Charm (13) also comes off a solid effort last time out at Grafton – stepping up in distance as well – should be well suited. Stephanie Thornton will ride.

It is a very open race to start the day off.

Selections:

4 – Dragon Miss
1 – For My Annie
6 – Alpha Go
13 – Shazz N Charm

Race 2

A distance race over 2200 metres. These are a lottery each week.

Seat Of Power (2) produced solid run last time out in the Sunshine Coast Cup - is trained by Gary Duncan and will be ridden by Ben Thompson. The form is good out of that race with the second horse – Arapaho winning the Grafton Cup last week.

Honorable Spirit (6) ran a wonderful fourth in the Grafton Cup. On that effort he rates a solid chance here. John Smerdon trains this gelding and Luke Tarrant will ride. He gets in on the minimum and seems to enjoy racing on this track.

Fast Talking (4) is trained by David Vandyke and Kyle Wilson Taylor (KWT) to ride. Loves heavy tracks and wet tracks. If the track deteriorates, he is probably the best wet tracker in the field.

Barade (3) won last time out here in a mid-week race – could continue that winning form.

Selections:

2 – Seat Of Power
6 – Honorable Spirit
4 – Fast Talking
3 – Barade

Race 3

The two-year-old runners go around here over 1050 metres.

All That Pizzazz (1) is a Tony Gollan runner here that did win last time out at Rockhampton over 1200 metres. Has had a three week freshen up and should sprint well over this sorter distance. Jimmy Orman will ride the gelding – he does look quite progressive and did perform well on a heavy track first up at Ipswich (his only career defeat).

Pomade (3) has been gelded. He is from the Kris Lees Racing team. The gelding was impressive on debut at Doomben on a soft track back in January. I think that he will be right in this race – has had two recent trials to get him ready for this run and Michael Cahill will ride.

Merrily (13) is a debutant from the Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted yard who has been impressive at the trials. She will be ridden by Ben Thompson and has drawn well. The filly has been well supported since the markets have opened. They normally are very competitive when the money comes for the stable – keep safe.

One here is at odds from the David Murphy yards – Flaming Conquest (10). Has performed very well on slow and heavy tracks and is resuming here. Kyle Wilson Taylor is aboard – she probably jumps from barrier 4 and leads them here – she may just keep going.

Rough chances to the Stuart Kendrick yard – Tow The Line (8) and the Les Ross trained Alert State (5) who won last time out at the Gold Coast on a heavy track – Brodie Loy will ride.

Selections:

1 – All That Pizzazz
3– Pomade
13 – Merrily
10 – Flaming Conquest
Rough chances – (8) Tow The Line & (5) Alert State

Race 4

A good race here over 1350 metres – Class 6.

Chris Waller Racing is represented with Starla (1) and Joviality (2). They will be ridden by Jim Byrne and Jimmy Orman respectively who locked in a battle for the QLD Jockey’s Premiership – it may be the two premier riders of this season battling out in the final 50 metres! Both stormed home last start and look well placed here.

Glitter Strip (5), trained by Gollan Racing got too far back last time out at the Sunshine Coast. Raced home well late and is probably going to appreciate the smaller field here and the claim for Kyle Wilson Taylor.

The stable mate is Love Sensation (6) who may show some improvement here again – fourth up for the new stable.

Renouf (3) won last time out at the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track – if the track deteriorates, he comes right into the race with Larry Cassidy to ride again.

Selections:

1 – Starla
2 – Joviality
5 – Glitter Strip
3 – Renouf
Rough chance – (6) Love Sensation

Race 5

Class 3 – an 1110 metres race.

Putontheredlight (16) is trained by Gollan Racing and will be ridden by Jim Byrne. Has been racing in better quality races than this event and looks the winner. Last time out was beaten by Uncommon James – was an excellent run. She doesn’t win out of turn with 1 career win from 9 starts – I just think that this race is one she may be able to get away with.

Proper Rogue (5) is the stable mate – Jimmy Orman will ride. First up for his new stable three weeks ago he raced well and will have stripped fitter for that effort. Another runner who enjoys wet tracks.

Mob Buster (4) is trained by Kelly Schweida and will be ridden by stable apprentice and QLD’s leading metropolitan apprentice for the 2021/22 season Kyle Wilson-Taylor – congratulations mate on the hard-fought win! This gelding races well fresh and does like wet surfaces – he is currently $14 in some markets, and I think represents some good value. He could sprint well here on a surface that suits.

Zoukina (14) is trained by Stephen Lee. Jag Guthmann-Chester will ride. Has had a 11 week freshen up – maybe could sprint well fresh here.

Selections:

16 – Putontheredlight
4 – Mob Buster
5 – Proper Rogue
14 – Zoukina
Rough chance – (9) Turboart

Race 6

This is the first leg of the Quaddie. A race over 1615 metres.

Ocean Treaty is trained by Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted and ran super first up here over 1350 metres when I thought she was a special at $41. She ran a super second beaten narrowly in a blanket finish. I thought that she was chopped out at a vital point in the straight. She has a tremendous second up record with 3 wins from 4 starts – Ben Thompson will ride. Just have some concerns if the track gets into that heavy rating – however, she is a very progressive mare.

Zing (8) was a very good second in the Pam O’Neill last time out – is the stable mate here - and Jim Byrne will ride her. She will enjoy a wet track and should be competitive again.

Easifar (6) is a Chris Waller Racing runner. Goes well on wet tracks and was solid first up in QLD in the Pam O’Neill three weeks ago. on that run she will be competitive here and Larry Cassidy will ride.

Puntura (5) won last time out on a bog heavy track on the Sunshine Coast. If the track gets into that heavy range this runner will be right in the race. Mark Du Plessis will ride the gelding for Barry Baldwin again here.

Selections:

11 – Ocean Treaty
6 - Easifar
5 – Puntura
8 – Zing

Race 7

This is the first leg of the Treble. A race over 1615 metres.

Tarex (11), trained by Lawrie Mayfield-Smith, ran second in the WINX Guineas last time out on a heavy track at the Sunshine Coast where he stormed home late over the mile. Kyle Wilson Taylor retains the ride here. He is fourth up here and if the track deteriorates, he must be respected on his latest run – I am just not a fan of the $2.10 on offer. He deserves the favourite tag and price – but I just think there may be some others here that could upset him.

Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted have Secret Tales (15) in the race at $8. She resumed at Doomben over 1350 metres and was sent out as favourite. I think that she looked like she needed that run. She doe like wet tracks and has a tremendous second up record with 3 starts for 2 wins. Brodie Loy throws his leg over her this week for the first time, and I think that she will be right in this race when the judge calls a halt to it.

Bentley Magic (4) is trained by Matthew Smith and Michael Cahill will ride him. He just is an each way chance for mine – maybe with the exotics. I think that the firm Eagle Farm surface last time out may have been an issue – forgive that run and look for an improvement on a wet surface.

Couldn’t Refuse (4) won on the synthetic course at the Sunshine Coast three weeks ago. The gelding does like the Doomben track and does go well on a soft surface. Desleigh Forster trains him and Jim Byrne will ride.

Selections:

15 – Secret Tales
11 – Tarex
6 – Bentley Magic
4 – Couldn’t Refuse

Race 8

A sprint over 1050 metres.

Donald “Ducky” Baker brings his very good sprinter Legal Esprit (1) to town first up here. I think that the claim for Adin Thompson is a very good move and brings him nicely into the race. He is drawn well in barrier 7 and with the speed that is engaged in the race he should get a lovely trail in behind the speed. He does possess a strong finish and Thompson will not want to get too far back on this gelding. He races well fresh, and I think that he is a great chance to salute and cause an upset here at around $10. He is an excellent career record with 11 starts – 5 wins and 4 placings.

Dovetail Diva (6) is a Sheila Laxon & John Symons filly that has always showed some ability at the racetrack. She looks the likely leader on paper and will bounce and run from barrier 6. She has had two solid barrier trials and the tongue tie goes on for this first up assignment.

Zuma California (8) is another impressive type, trained by Cameron Richardson and will be ridden by Jim Byrne. The tongue tie goes on him as well for this first up run. He was super impressive in a recent barrier trail at Toowoomba where he destroyed the opposition by 7.5 lengths in good time. He has raced in far superior company than the runners he faces here – he is posted as the early market favourite. Must be respected.

Lime Soda is from Mark Currie’s yards in Toowoomba – Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride her again after winning on her last start on the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track. The worse the track gets the better she will go – she loves the mud! She will be handy throughout in the running and represents great each way value at around $8.

Les Ross trains Mishani Sniper (14) who is on the quick back up from last week. The blinkers come off this week and a tongue tie goes on – Wendy Peel will ride with a 3-kilogram claim. The gelding gets in well at the weights and I think that on Doomben track that he may be a great chance at around $41 – he is third up here and on a wet track.

Selections:

1 – Legal Esprit
6 – Dovetail Diva
7 – Lime Soda
8 – Zuma California
Rough chances – (14) Mishani Sniper

Race 9

The last race – over 1350 metres – a massive field. I just hope the rain that is forecast stays away and we can get through the meeting.

“Last Race Larry” – Larry Cassidy was at it again last weekend with Yes Dream. Can he do it again this week on Go Wandji (5) trained by Tom Dougall. The gelding won first up at Eagle Farm and he races well at Doomben. The small field should assist him as well as he gets back in his back in his races and storms home late.

Ventura Ocean (4) is trained by Kris Lees and has had a seven week freshen up. Had a recent trial – on a wet track – Kyle Wilson Taylor to ride and the fact that he should race on the speed probably suggests that if Go Wandji (4) gets caught up in traffic that he could fall in and win the race at big odds.

Safework (6) is from the Gold Coast stable of Scott Morrisey. He has run consecutive seconds in his past two outings running into the boom gelding Uncommon James and then Goldsborough last time out. Both of those runs would suggest he will be competitive here. Sean Cormack will ride.

Palladas (3) from the Tony Gollan yards will be ridden by Jimmy Orman. Has been racing without luck – keep safe.

Selections:

5 – Go Wandji
6 – Safework
4 – Ventura Ocean
3 – Palladas
