WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, JULY 30, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, July 28, 2022
Back at Eagle Farm. The track rated “GOOD.” The rail is out 3 metres for the entire track.
These 2021/22 premierships have all but been decided leading into this meeting:
Premier trainer – Tony Gollan Racing Metro Jockey – Jimmy Orman Metro Apprentice – Kyle Wilson-Taylor Provincial trainer - Stuart Kendrick Provincial Jockey – Ryan Wiggins Country Jockey – Ric McMahon
All winners have had tremendous seasons and should be congratulated.
Straight into it with some large fields to assess.
NB: As these selections were made prior to final scratchings please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day. _____________________________________________________________________
Race 1
A distance race over 1815m.
Rayjen (8) won here last time out. Trained by Robert Heathcote, she will be ridden by Taylor Marshall again. Looks well placed again and should be competitive.
See Marie (5) is trained by Desleigh Forster and Jim Byrne will ride. Has had a few runs in this preparation and has not made much luck – she gets the chance to post a win in this race.
Mark Currie trains Kuzco Lad (3) who led and won at Toowoomba over 1850 metres. The gelding has won two races in a row now and looks progressive – Kyle Wilson-Taylor will ride.
Selections:
8 – Rayjen 5 – See Marie 3 – Kuzco Lad 4 – Dune Forty Five
Race 2
A Class 3 over 1600 metres.
Last time out Gwan So (12) raced in the Grafton Guineas and was defeated in a photo. That effort was super, and he is well placed here in this field by Annabel Neasham. Brodie Loy will ride the colt here.
Deficit (10) is trained in NSW by Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou. Has been racing on the very wet tracks in Sydney and has been sent north to race on a firm surface. He will get that here and should show some improvement with Jimmy Orman to ride.
Sea Palling (9) has the blinkers going on for Barry Lockwood. Raced last time out over 1400 metres where he got too far back and never was a winning chance. Previous run was over a mile, and he was competitive. I think that stepping back up in distance and will Kyle Wilson Taylor aboard he could get the job done.
Contreras (5) was super at Grafton last time out over the mile. Had some drama in the running on that occasion and got too far back. Given some more luck here, at $41, I think that he could cause an upset for trainer David Scanes with Paul Hammersley to ride.
Relucent (2) is trained by Paul Shailer with Ryan Maloney to ride. Ran a solid second in a midweek race here over 1500 metres – will be able to fill a place.
Selections:
12 – Gwan So 10 – Deficit 9 – Sea Palling 5 – Contreras Rough chance – (2) Relucent
Race 3
A two-year-old race over 1400 metres – the race has been decimated with early scratchings.
Russian Warrior (8) resumed over the Grafton Carnival and could not run down the winner over 1200 metres. The way she raced on that occasion for trainer Allan Chau would suggest that she will be happy with the extra distance. That race was run in fast time and I think will be a good form race in coming weeks. Sean Cormack will ride the filly again. She is around $12 and that is great each way odds.
Billionaire Baby (4) won at a midweek meeting at Doomben over 1200 metres last start. Jimmy Orman will ride again for Robert Heathcote again. Looks like the extra distance of this race will be right up his alley and he should be competitive.
Red Top (3) won at Doomben three weeks ago over 1350 metres. Trained by Sears Racing – Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride him.
Recommendation (2) is trained by Ciaron Maher & David Eustace and has won two from two at provincial tracks in NSW. Has been the medium of good support since the markets opened – I just am not sure whether he is up to Saturday grade yet – happy to be proven wrong – Ryan Maloney will ride.
Selections:
8 – Russian Warrior 4– Billionaire Baby 3 – Red Top 2 – Recommendation
Race 4
A distance race over 2400 metres.
Endorphins (8), trained by Kris Lees Racing with Jim Byrne to ride, raced here a fortnight ago and got too far back, however, made steady ground late and finished second over 2200 metres. The fast tempo was to his disadvantage late as the leaders got away and kept on going.
Credit Crunch (7) is trained by Matthew Smith with Stephanie Thornton to ride. Has been racing on heavy surfaces in NSW – I think we may see some improvement on the firm track.
Oceanic Flash (2) has been sent north by Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou looking for a firm track. He raced here three starts ago over 1800 metres and was heavily supported and started favourite. I thought he was disappointing on that occasion – with some more runs under his belt and over this longer distance we may see an improvement. Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride.
Honorable Spirit (1) ran a solid fourth in the 2022 Grafton Cup – must be respected here.
Selections:
8 – Endorphins 7 – Credit Crunch 2 – Oceanic Flash 1 – Honorable Spirit Rough chance – (9) Monreal
Race 5
A large field over 1200 metres. The final leg of the Early Quaddie. Hopefully, we are still alive!
The Tony Gollan pair look the way to go here. Tilanam (1) won first up here, and I think suffered the second up “yips” last time out. Forgive that run and she is right in this race with Ryan Maloney to ride, despite the large weight and the wide barrier.
Putontheredlight (6) was scratched last week with the poor track at Doomben. She is stable-mate to Tilanam (1), and she does meet her 4.5 kilograms for that defeat here on 25 June. I think with the speed engaged in this race she gets in nicely as she like to settle midfield and flash home. Jim Byrne will ride – it is difficult to split these two in this race. She has had three weeks between races – she should sprint well fresh.
Huss On First (10) is trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted. She made an exciting debut to racing when she won at a midweek meeting at Doomben. Ben Thompson retains the ride. She steps up to Saturday grade, has been well supported in the markets and must be respected.
Fearnought (9) is trained by Chris Waller and Samantha Collett will ride. The filly has had a three week freshen up since she ran over 1350 metres at Doomben – I really think that she did not cope with the distance last start. Back to 1200 metres I think that she could go well here.
Selections:
1 – Tilanam 6 – Putontheredlight 10 – Huss On First 9 – Fearnought Rough chance – (3) Sonnet Star
Race 6
This is the first leg of the Quaddie. A BM78 sprint race over 1200 metres.
Go Wandji (1) was scratched last week due to the wet track. Larry Cassidy will keep his unique association with the gelding. He loves this Eagle Farm track – just a little concerned that he can get back in his races and with this large field he may need some luck late to post the win.
Delyth (18) looks a progressive type from Chris Munce Racing who has won her past three starts. Mark Du Plessis will ride again. The mare has drawn well and should sit in behind the speed and be handy in the race throughout. That makes me think that she should be in a better position to win the race than some of her opposition.
Chris Waller Racing has El Buena (4) and Rubamos (7). They both have been sent north after some racing in NSW. They both have genuine chances here and should not be overlooked in this grade.
Fleet Dove (9) resumed for the Kelly Schweida Racing yards last start over 1000 metres and ran a solid second. The mare has a great second up record and, stepping up in distance and with some good speed in the race, she gets her chance to break through here – the stable apprentice Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride.
Selections:
18 – Delyth 4 – El Buena 1 – Go Wandji 9 – Fleet Dove Rough chance – (7) Rubamos
Race 7
Class 6 over 1000 metres. First leg of the Treble.
Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted train Osamu (4) who resumed with a barnstorming win here first up over this distance. Solid time and a solid win looks well placed again here with Ben Thompson to ride again. He is now undefeated in two starts here at Eagle Farm and looks the winner.
Sue Grills (3) will bring Burning Crown (3) from her stables in Tamworth to Eagle Farm. This gelding has always been an exciting sprinter and had over 19 months off racing after an injury. He resumed in the Kirby at Grafton first up and performed exceptionally. If he has overcome that injury, he will be competitive here. It will be great to see Sue win a race at Eagle Farm – and then shout WINNO an afternoon tea in the lounge – I say Sue because her son Andrew would not part with $1 at any stage – so there is no point in asking him to shout!
The Tony Gollan Racing team have two resuming here. Both have been trialling well and always race well fresh. The Move (1) has a huge weight; however, apprentice Angela Jones will claim 3 kilograms and that will assist this sprinter. He races well fresh and must be respected – I think this could be Angela’s first ride – or her first chance to win a Saturday metropolitan race – good luck Angela!
Mischief Managed (11) some say is named after me – who would say such a thing! Won a recent trial and Stephanie Thornton will ride. She sprints well fresh and at $12 represents great each way value here.
I must make mention of a sentimental name’s sake here – Nikohli Beagle (9)! Everyone knows that I love beagles and one of my beautiful beagles “Ike” would have turned 15 earlier in the week – I miss him dearly – I will be having a sneaky few dollars on this Matthew Smith runner who resumed on a soft track at Randwick – I think he will be better served on a dry track and could cause an upset here with Brodie Loy to ride - $51 is on offer!
Selections:
4 – Osamu 11 – Mischief Managed 3 – Burning Crown 1 – The Move Rough chances – (9) Nikohli Beagle
Race 8
An Open Class race over 1400 metres – massive field – tough to line up some of this form.
Love Tap (5) is trained by Richard & Will Freedman and comes here, I think, looking for a firm track. He has had two runs since resuming both on tracks where he seemed out of sorts. Last time out he pulled up with a cardiac arrhythmia – best to overlook that run. He has trialled well since and I think that he will be incredibly competitive at $12. Looks a great each way bet – Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride.
Tokoriki Lad (3) resumed with a massive effort storming down the outside of a particularly good field and winning at $20 first up. It even surprised trainer Tony Gollan. Stephanie Thornton will ride him again – he has a poor second up record, but on his first up effort you must put him in.
Red Chase (4) led in the race where Tokoriki Lad (3) nailed him in the shadows of the post. He meets him 1.5 kilograms better here for that defeat. He can reverse the decision – trained by Desleigh Forster and Jim Byrne will ride.
The roughie of the race that I really like at $21 is At Witz End (6) trained by Owen Glue and my mate Luke Tarrant will ride. Last start he raced extremely well in a quality field in the 2022 Grafton Ramornie. That was an earnest effort, and he has an awesome third up record for six starts, 3 wins and 1 placing. I think that he could cause a major upset in this race.
Looks Like Elvis (1) is trained by Jarrod Austin and Jimmy Orman will ride him. I remember Orman winning on him for his maiden win at Grafton several years ago. He is very quirky, however, if he turns up, he will slay this field. A fun fact is that he has raced here on this track for 8 starts – 4 wins and 4 placings.
Selections:
5 – Love Tap 4 – Red Chase 6 – At Witz End 3 – Tokoriki Lad Rough chance – (1) Looks Like Elvis
Race 9
The last race – over 1400 metres – three-year-old runners – a massive field they will be coming wide I think come the last race.
Can LAST RACE LARRY – Larry Cassidy grab keep his crown with Yes Dream (2)? Trained by Michael Lee he won here over 1200 metres. Steps up in distance – goes up in weight and has drawn wide in barrier 16 – Last Race Larry – may have to be Last Race Larry the Magician this week!
I like the Richard & Will Freedman trained Field Wiri (10) in the race to salute with Jim Byrne aboard. He got too far back in his debut in QLD on this track over 1200 metres prior to storming home from back in the field to run a nice second over 1400 metres. He is drawn better and should get the run of the race.
Drive A Deel (8) is a Robert Heathcote Racing runner with Tegan Harrison to ride. The filly is second up at a distance that she will enjoy – I think that the speed in the race will see her placed close to the speed – she just needs some luck from barrier 12 not to get caught wide.
Chatty Lady (6) trained by Mark Currie won 3 weeks ago at Doomben over 1350 metres. Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride her – she is drawn well too to go forward and sit in behind the speed.
Manhood (3) has won his past two starts and is posted as favourite at $1.95 in some markets for the Annabel Neasham stables with Jag Guthmann-Chester to ride him again. Jag has ridden him to his past two starts and they are aiming to post a hat trick of wins – I just think that he may be tested in this grade and, drawn wide in barrier 15, he will need some luck to get the chocolates.
You can play wide here with some of my other “rough selections” – these races are always value each week – IF the favourite gets rolled and does not finish in the top four you will win a motza!
Selections:
10 – Field Wiri 6 – Chatty Lady 8 – Drive A Deel 3 – Manhood Rough chance – (2) Yes Dream – (4) Ghostwriter – (1) Grey Defence – (9) Enabler ___________________________________________________________________

Tough meeting – there are many that have chances here. Kyle Wilson Taylor, Stephanie Thornton and Jim Byrne all have some nice rides. I think Jim Byrne may get the decision.

WINNO V FLEMO
FLEMO and WINNO were on FIRE last week – several winners between us. I think FLEMO got the victory by a narrow margin. The battle continues this week with WINNO and FLEMO. Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
