MONTANA LADY GETS HER TWO-YEAR-OLD WIN

Montana Lady put her two-year-old win on the board when she saluted in a QTIS Two-and Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate over 1200m at Toowoomba on July 16.
The daughter of Red Dazzler was winning at the fifth attempt after having previously notched up two second placings … once on debut over 800m and then again in a run over 1000m in the start immediately prior to her win.
Montana Lady jumped as the equal favourite at a starting price of $3.40, along with Tomboy’s Spirit, and these two runners would indeed fill the first two placings, although the result was never anywhere near as close as the betting had predicted.
Strongly away from a wide barrier at the break, Angela Jones pushed the Tony and Maddysen Sears trained runner straight to the front. Skater ($6.50) then went up to try and pressure Montana Lady in the back straight and, more particularly, in the sweep to the home turn … while Tomboy’s Spirit sat just off that duo in third place, keeping a watching brief.
Jones got more vigorous on Montana Lady as the field turned for home and, with Skater not taking the turn as well as the rail hugging Montana Lady, the latter quickly opened up a gap of two lengths on the chasing pack.
Skater did try to kick on, but was running around a bit in the straight and weakened late, while Tomboy’s Spirit was also trying to fight on in the centre of the track … but Montana Lady was basically off and gone on her way to an assured victory which was recorded as a 2.30 length win at the line … the year older Tomboy’s Spirit did get up for second place.
Doing it at both ends … whatever the level of company … is seldom an easy task but Montana Lady and Jones certainly made it look that way.
It was a pretty good way for Montana Lady to round off her two-year-old campaign.
