WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, AUGUST 20, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 18, 2022
DOOMBEN this weekend with the track rated ‘soft’ at the time of writing. The rail is out 2 metres for the entire circuit. A bit busy this week – so will keep it straight to the point.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
We start the day off with a sprint race over 1050 metres.
Muschialli (9), trained by Tony Gollan, has failed on heavy tracks in recent efforts. Blinkers on this weekend – Angela Jones and a 3-kilogram claim – look for an improved effort and nice odds.
Gemelon Bolt (2), trained by Chris Anderson, comes off a midweek win here – Adin Thompson will ride and looks well placed.
Caribbean King (1) will be ridden by Jimmy Orman after winning on his home track on the Sunshine Coast last time out.
Selections:
9 – Muschialli 2 – Gemelon Bolt 1 – Caribbean King 7 – Be Water My Friend
Race 2
Small field over 1350 metres.
Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted train Hang Five (1), second up here with Ben Thompson aboard. Will strip fitter and appreciate the extra distance. Should be able to sit in behind the hot speed in the race and finish them off late.
Cool N Ready (2), from the Edmonds Racing stables, has won his past two starts and is thus looking for a hat trick of wins – Jimmy Orman will ride. He likes to lead and will bounce and go forward.
Demon Delivera (4) can he “delivera” a second Saturday metro win for the Kylie & Corey Geran team who won their first weekend race last weekend at Eagle Farm – Mark Du Plessis will ride. Looks like he will thrive at this distance.
Selections:
1- Hang Five 2 – Cool N Ready 4 – Demon Delivera 7 – Sir Leonidas
Race 3
An Open Handicap race over 1350 metres.
Go Wandji (4) produced a superb winning last time out with Larry Cassidy aboard. Looks ideally placed here and should get the job completed. The small field allows him to settle and then flash home like he normally does.
Tumbler Ridge (2) is third up here – look for an improvement as he increases in distance – Boris Thornton will ride.
Snowzone (3) was a good winner two weeks ago here – steps up in trip and I think may struggle at the increased distance. Trained by Kris Lees – Ben Thompson will ride him again.
Selections:
4 – Go Wandji 2– Tumbler Ridge 3 – Snowzone 7 – Wham
Race 4
A distance race here over 2200 metres.
Last time out, a fortnight ago, Za Ceibas (7) defeated Stubai (1). I think it will be the same result here despite the 2.5 kilogram weight turn around in favour of Stubai (1).
Za Ceibas is trained by Chris Waller Racing and Jimmy Orman will ride him here. He should be suited with the extra distance.
The stablemate is Otyrar (9) who won midweek and steps up to weekend grade. The way he worked home late time out he should be okay with the longer distance. Ben Thompson will ride.
Stubai (1) ran super for new stable Will and Peter Hulbert – I think he will strip fitter for that run and look for further improvement here with the stable apprentice Adin Thompson to ride – his claim will be beneficial. Just hope he can run out the extra 200 metres and place some pressure on these Chris Waller runners.
Selections:
7 – Za Ceibas 1 – Stubai 9 – Otyrar 5 – Brown Thomas
Race 5
Last leg of the early Quaddie.
Self Indulgent (12) from the Gollan Racing team was unlucky first up – seemed to resent being on the inside of runners and then got held up in the straight. The blinkers go on here and so does Ben Thompson – look for a bold improvement.
Just Field (13) had excuses last time out as well missing the start here over 1110 metres. This Damien Lane mare should improve if she gets out of the barrier cleanly. Jim Byrne who rode the first three winners last weekend will ride.
Daralina Belle (3) is second up here after resuming on a soft track at Randwick for trainer Matthew Smith, who has a solid hit rate when he brings runners to QLD – Jimmy Orman has been booked to ride. She has solid second up form and has been well backed in the markets since they have opened.
Selections:
12 – Self Indulgent 13 – Just Field 3 – Daralina Belle 1 – Deep Sceiva
Race 6
This is the first leg of the Quaddie. A race over the mile.
Jakama (8) was beaten in a blanket finish last time out by Bargannon (2) who ironically, I thought would need a race over a mile to win. They meet here again, and I think that the tables can be turned and with Adin Thompson to ride.
Bargannon (2) is trained by David Vandyke and Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride. After his strong finish and win here over 1350 metres in his last start he could just go on with it and win this race.
Tony Gollan trains Aussie Nugget (5) who will be ridden by Angela Jones. Was hot on their heels in the race won by Bargannon (2) at his last start. That was his first start for the new stable and I expect that he will strip fitter for that effort. At the ridiculous odds of $14 could cause an upset here.
The early market favourite is The Great Idea (4) who is third up with Ryan Maloney to ride. The gelding does love this track and distance and should be respected.
Selections:
8 – Jakama 5 – Aussie Nugget 2 - Bargannon 4 – The Great Idea Rough chance – (1) Sir Barnabus
Race 7
First leg of the treble over a mile.
Merimee (13) is trained by Chris Waller and is drawn terribly in barrier 17. She has had a freshen up since her last start effort and a recent barrier trial. If Jimmy Orman can get any luck in running, she should be winning this race.
Maevila Ruler (8), trained by Mark Currie, didn't handle the heavy track here two starts ago. He then went back to his home track at Toowoomba and slayed them as a very short price favourite. Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride the gelding who is drawn well and represents great each way value at $16.
Knight Mariner (2) is second up over a more suitable distance for Tony Gollan with his stable apprentice Angela Jones to ride. Made solid ground first up over a shorter distance, However the short price does not inspire me in any way.
Selections:
13 – Merimee 8 – Maevila Ruler 11 – Vendidit 2 – Knight Mariner
Race 8
Open race here over 1350 metres.
Fleet Dove (14) is third up for the Kelly Schweida and Kyle Wilson Taylor combination. Just think this mare will show something here down in the weights, third up over a longer distance and on a firmer track. At $16 I am prepared to gamble that she can win.
Rubamos (12) is trained by Chris Waller and is third up as well with Ben Thompson in the saddle. His first up effort in QLD was good and I expect him to take some improvement out of that run - look for another bold run.
Caffrey (8) is trained by Desleigh Forster and has a recent trial win under his belt. He resumes here in a race where he could show up with Jim Byrne to ride - drawn ideally and has an exceptional first up record. Keep safe.
Selections:
14 – Fleet Dove 12 – Rubamos 8 - Caffrey 6 – Tumbler Ridge Rough chances – (2) Sir Rocket
Race 9
The last race – tough race to end the day over 1200 metres.
Two weeks ago, Desert Dreamer (3) defeated Manhood (16) in the shadows of the post. I think the Tony Gollan runner will be hard to hold out again this weekend – especially with the 3-kilogram claim for Angela Jones.
Manhood (16) has regular rider Jag Guthmann-Chester back aboard after he could not ride him last time due to his low allocated weight. The stallion has the blinkers and a tongue tie going on – this gear change should see him competitive this weekend, but I cannot step up and take the $2.40 on offer.
A few rough chances here to the Toowoomba trained horses. Mark Currie trains Mill Rossa (9), coming back from some runs in Mackay and Rockhampton. A months freshen up and Kyle Wilson Taylor to ride – keep safe as he normally sprints well and will run a bold race.
For My Annie (4), trained by Lindsay Hatch, has drawn terribly in barrier 17 with Brad Stewart to ride. If the track gets into the good range or a little firmer look for a solid run at huge odds.
If Optimo (19) gets a run here, he could upset them as well.
Selections:
3 – Desert Dreamer 9 – Mill Rossa 16 – Manhood 4 – For My Annie Rough chance – (19) Optimo _____________________________________________________________________
Jockeys Challenge
Tough weekend. Jimmy Orman, Ben Thompson, Adin Thompson, and Angela Jones have some nice rides. I think Jimmy could get the job done here.
