WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 3, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, September 1, 2022
DOOMBEN this weekend – TATTERSALLS RACING CLUB DAY
The track rated “SOFT”. The rail is out 4.5 metres for the entire circuit.
The first meeting of SPRING and they are saying it is going to rain!
A bit busy this week – so will keep it straight to the point.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
We start the day off with a distance race over 1630 metres. A small field.
Lammer (2) a last start winner for Kacy Fogden looks well placed stepping up to the mile with Ryan Maloney to ride.
Executive Stress (3) is trained by Adrian Coome with Boris Thornton in the saddle. Won two in a row at Rockhampton before a reasonable effort last start here over 1350 metres – should strip fitter.
Selections: 2 – Lammer 3 – Executive Stress 1 – Altar Boy 4 – Money Man
Race 2
Small field over 1050 metres.
The boom colt Steady Ready (1) resumes for the Sears Racing team at Toowoomba – looks well placed - will have Ryan Maloney aboard for the first time.
Flaming Conquest (3) led and won last time out and could set up something for Steady Ready (1) to try and run down late with his huge weight – he could just hold on late and win again at some decent odds. Trained by David Murphy – Georgina Cartwright will ride the colt again – keep safe.
Selections:
1- Steady Ready 3 – Flaming Conquest 5 – Kobe Lad 4 – Clairvue Molly
Race 3
Open race over 1110 metres.
Ice in Vancouver (1) I think was unlucky last time out and didn't handle the Eagle Farm track. I think back on a soft track at Doomben you will see a much better performance. The claim for apprentice Jackson Searle gets him in well here.
Caribbean King (7) finished the race off nicely for his first outing at a metropolitan Saturday meeting last time out. I expect him to strip fitter be better for the experience and be very competitive in this race. Trained by Stuart Kendrick – Brodie Loy will have the ride.
Proper Rogue (3) was third up last time out with a huge weight and just didn't seem to fire. With that run under his belt. I expect a much better performance this weekend from the Tony Gollan trained runner – Ryan Maloney is aboard and these two have an excellent strike rate when they combine.
Selections:
1 – Ice In Vacouver 7– Caribbean King 3 – Proper Rogue 8 – Fetch
Race 4
A sprint race here over 1050 metres. Decimated with scratchings.
Be Water My Friend (9) looks well placed again by Matthew Park and Mark Du Plessis will ride. The gelding has won his past two starts and I think if the rain comes across the weekend, like they are forecasting, and the track gets downgraded he looks a great bet.
Osamu (3) I think was unlucky second up – overlook that run and look for a strong effort here. From the super consistent Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted stable with Ben Thompson will ride.
Never Paid (10) is trained by Kelly Schweida – maybe the owners and the punters can get paid with any luck! Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride.
Selections:
9 – Be Water My Friend 3 – Osamu 10 – Never Paid 5 – Superare
Race 5
Last leg of the early Quaddie.
Big chance here for the Sears Racing team to post a winning metropolitan double with Red Wave (8) who is second up. He resumed at Ipswich and worked home well over an unsuitable 1350 metres. Stepping up to the mile this weekend he looks ideally placed by this stable - he has won previously second up and with Michael Cahill to ride the $6 each way looks great value for mine.
Sergeant Silva (6) trained by Robert Heathcote loves this track and this distance and I expect we will see a bold showing in this race with the Adin “Notorious” Thompson to ride for the stable. I am a little concerned that I live on the inner north and the “Notorious” one lives close to me!
Relucent (5) raced at Randwick last start and was solid. Just think that he struggles to get past the post first. Paul Shailer (5) who trains at Port Macquarie travels him north looking for a win – Brodie Loy has been given the job if trying to get him to the line first
Selections:
8 – Red Wave 6 – Sergeant Silva 5 – Relucent 1 – Coup De Tonnerre
Race 6
This is the first leg of the Quaddie. A race over 2030 metres.
Looks a nice race for the Chris Waller racing pair of Otyrar (10) & Za Ceibas (8)
Otyrar (10) raced a fortnight ago and was working into the race nicely when held up at a vital point and never got a real crack at them on the line – Ben Thompson retains the ride this weekend.
Za Ceibas (8) is the stablemate. Won here two starts ago and then just had no luck last time out – forget that run and look for a marked improvement here with Jim Byrne to ride.
Backlog (7) trained by Scott Morrisey was unlucky last time out as well. Held up – then checked then got going again late on the line. A senior rider in Sean Cormack is aboard this weekend and he may alter the unfortunate run of placings for this stable in town each weekend.
Vendidit (6) is trained by Glenn Thornton. Has raced two weeks in a row! Last weekend posted a solid win with Boris Thornton riding – he retains the ride here.
Selections:
10 – Otyrar 8 – Za Ceibas 7 - Backlog 6 – Vendidit Rough chance – (5) Dune Forty Five
Race 7
First leg of the treble over a mile.
Aussie Nugget (3) is third up for his new stable – Gollan Racing. Apprentice Angela Jones claims 3 kilograms – surely, he can get the job done! Has been good in his first two runs for the yard.
Jakama (5) has the blinkers coming off and the winkers going on for this run. Was swamped late close to the line last time out. Sam Collett seems to have a great affiliation with this gelding and she is back on him – maybe a change in luck.
Jetty (4) is not without some chance in this field either – trained by Chris Munce Racing – Boris Thornton will ride – had a birthday earlier in the week as well – a win would be an appropriate way to celebrate – HAPPY BIRTHDAY BORIS!
Selections:
3 – Aussie Nugget 5 – Jakama 4 – Jetty 2 – Slow Hands
Race 8
Open race here over 1350 metres. The TATTERSALL’S MEMBERS CUP!
Last start winner Sir Rocket (5) should be hard to roll here – trained by Robert Heathcote and will be ridden by Tegan Harrison. He can throw us some odd results from time to time so you will not be wanting to take a silly price.
The stable mate Deep Sceiva (10) drops in weight – granted she is up in class. She loves this Doomben track and with Luke Tarrant aboard could be the blow out runner in this field at the current rude odds of $21 – do not overlook this runner.
The Annabel Neasham runner Hasabro (3) is having the first start for the stable. He as been gelded and given a few gear changes and has been trialling well recently – he may be the way to go if you wish to look for some value at around $7. Brodie Loy will ride him and he looks well placed in this grade.
Snippy Fox (6), trained by Joe Pride, raced over 1500 metres last time out at Rosehill and seemed to struggle at that distance. I think dropping back in distance will assist him and the blinkers are going on for this assignment.
Selections:
5 – Sir Rocket 3 – Hasabro 6 – Snippy Fox 10 – Deep Sceiva Rough chances – (2) Redouble
Race 9
The last race – tough way to end the day over 1350 metres. The field has been destroyed with all the early scratchings.
We finish here with a hotpot odds-on favourite trained by Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted – Enterprise Mia (12) with Sam Collett to ride – looks like a certainty to be fair now so many of the runners are out. She won leading all the way last time out and gave nothing else a chance. Hard to see here getting beaten in this field.
Big Bad Bruce (9), trained by Gollan Racing, is third up now and could be ready to show something, but he will need to improve on his last start effort. In saying that he goes well on this track.
As for the others – take your pick!
Selections:
12 – Enterprise Mia 9 – Big Bad Bruce 7 – Love Struck 3 – Don’t Stop ______________________________________________________________________

Several have chances - Brodie Loy, Ben Thompson, and Ryan Maloney. I think Ben could get the job done here.
