GOLDEEL SHINES IN SECOND-UP WIN AT DOOMBEN

The very useful Goldeel claimed her fourth win from only nine starts when she landed a Class 3 Plate over 1630m at Doomben on September 3.
The Tony and Maddysen Sears trained four-year-old daughter of Dundeel came into the race second-up, off the back of an eye-catching runner-up finish when resuming after nearly five months away from race action at Ipswich on August 17.
That run was over 1350m (where she was unwanted in the betting at a starting price of $17) … and up to 1630m here with the benefit of the Ipswich outing under her belt and with the 3kg claim of Angela Jones, Goldeel was always going to be right in it here and was duly supported into favourite at $2.50.
Goldeel made every possible use of the number one barrier draw, chasing into an immediate and clearcut lead with the $16 chance Sheppy being the runner closest to her as the Sears trained runner took the field down the back stretch.
The comfortable lead at a comfortable gallop remained the status quo for some time for Goldeel until the field started to close up on the sweep to the turn with Jones was still unconcerned, seemingly still with a lapful of horse.
When Sheppy make a move and started to apply pressure on Goldeel early in the straight though, Jones did get more urgent on Goldeel as it became a two horse, stride for stride battle over much of the last 250m.
Halfway up the straight it did look like Sheppy, who had now narrowly headed Goldeel, had the momentum to go on with it, but Jones and Goldeel weren’t done yet and, helped by weight advantage of Jones’s claim, they kept fighting and their effort was rewarded when they inched back into the outright lead with 50m left to run and then continued to do enough to ensure that Sheppy could not come back at them again.
The winning margin was 0.20 lengths.
This win took Goldeel’s prize-money earnings to $104 100.
