WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 10, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, September 8, 2022
The track rating is “soft”. The rail is out 1 metre for the entire circuit. There may be some rain later in the week – so keep your eye on the track rating.
I was enjoying the races on Wednesday and watched Zac Lloyd punch out his first Metro winner at Canterbury. A great ride – looks like he settled in in NSW – now he just needs to build on this wonderful effort.
Congratulations ZAC! I suppose the real question is has he become a NSW supporter now he is down there and riding for Godolphin as well who wear the BLUE silks!
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
We start the day off with a race over 1350 metres. A small field.
Cool ‘N’ Ready, trained by Edmonds Racing, has posted three consecutive wins and Jimmy Orman will ride again. Just hope that he has one more solid run in him this preparation.
Prince Shalaa (3) comes out of the Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted yards with Boris Thornton to take the ride. Turned in an average effort last time out at Eagle Farm. It may pay to forgive that run as it was second up - look for an improvement in this race.
Madame Odette (9), trained by Tony Gollan, won on debut at Ipswich impressively. May strip fitter in this race and could be hard to beat - Georgina Cartwright will ride her again.
Selections:
2 – Cool N Ready 3 – Prince Shalaa 9 – Madam Odette 1 – Cocobrew Express
Race 2
Distance race over 2200 metres.
Chris Munce trains Southern Stock (7) with Larry Cassidy aboard. Fourth run this preparation on a track that he enjoys. Looks well placed.
Seat of Power (2) and Honorable Spirit (3) ran second and first respectively last time out in the Gold Coast Cup. They will run well again here. Seat of Power (2) should benefit from the 3K claim for apprentice Wendy Peel in this race.
Dune Forty-Five (9) ran a gallant second here in a similar race two weeks ago – Luke Tarrant will ride this week.
Selections:
7- Southern Stock 2 – Seat Of Power 3 – Honorable Spirit 9 – Dune Forty-Five
Race 3
Open race over 1200 metres.
Tony Gollan is well represented here with Self Indulgent (8) and Ingear (1). Both have gear changes is this race.
Self Indulgent (8) is third up with the tongue tie going on. She has won previously third up. Last time out she faded late – I think that she can win this race at decent odds – Ryan Maloney to ride.
Ingear (1) has the winkers going on and a 3-kilogram claim for Angela Jones – she is in tremendous form after claiming a winning treble last week. I believe that her partner Kyle Wilson Taylor was seen opening the wallet and paying for dinner! Ingear (1) is second up here and should get a nice run in transit.
California Surreal (11) is a Snowden Racing runner to be ridden by Ben Thompson. The corporates got smashed when they posted $13 on Wednesday about this runner – suddenly an avalanche of money has seen her firm into $5.50. The recent trial was nothing to rave about – barrier 14 is not ideal – and she will need to get some luck, I believe, to win the race.
Mary Valley (12) is a Steele Ryan runner with Dale Smith in the saddle. She is second up this weekend – a solid trial win recently and with a great barrier, she could upset these more fancied runners.
Selections:
8 – Self Indulgent 11– California Surreal 1 – Ingear 12 – Mary Valley
Race 4
A sprint race here over 1250 metres.
Birriecart (9) resumes here from the super consistent Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted stables with Boris Thornton aboard. Has a solid racing record with 4 starts for 3 wins. Two barrier trials under his belt for this first up assignment win and an impressive win in his last trial.
Adonisea (8) raced well last time out and was beaten by one that was flying. On that run I think that this Gary Duncan trained gelding will be hard to hold out – Taylor Marshall keeps the ride.
Bundyandcoke (4) may be the drink of choice after the race if this gelding can win for Alan Robinson and Tegan Harrison. The gelding has drawn well and should race in a forward position.
It Is difficult to line up the form for All England (17), a gelding from the Snowden Racing team. He resumed at Hawkesbury carrying a huge weight – he worked home well after drawing a wide barrier and getting too far back on a track that favoured the leaders – this runner could be a very good rough chance at $18 – massive odds!
Selections:
9 – Birriecart 8 – Adonisea 17 – All England 4 – Bundyandcoke
Race 5
Last leg of the early Quaddie. A No Metro Win race – tough race.
Tough race – may pay to stand and watch!
The NSW horse Concocted (16), trained by Nathan Doyle, looked good winning last time out at Hawkesbury – should race midfield and is down in the weights. I think that at $9 he represents great each way value – Taylor Marshall will ride.
Veteran trained Pat Duff saddles up Scottish Prince (19) who won last time out at Ipswich. Has drawn a nice alley and they have him posted at $26 – a great rough chance.
Caffrey (8) is second up here – just cannot seem to draw a barrier – this week barrier 18 for trainer Desleigh Forster. Jim Byrne will probably be midfield as there as some good speed in the race – he may just get in and be very competitive in this field.
Harlequin Field (5) has posted two wins and is looking for a hat trick here this weekend for Liam Birchley. Has an impressive career record – 15 starts and 5 wins and 4 placings. That is pretty good stats for this race. Just the barrier is some concern drawing barrier 15 as he normally likes to race on the speed – Brodie Loy may let some of the other speedsters go hard up front and take a sit in behind them – this could just prove the winning tactic.
Selections:
16 – Concocted 19 – Scottish Prince 8 – Caffrey 5 – Harlequin Field
Race 6
This is the first leg of the Quaddie. A race over 1600 metres. Only a relatively small field.
Some solid speed in the race should suit some run-on horses.
Tumbler Ridge (2) loves the speed on and will be thundering home – trained by O’Dea & Hoysted , Boris Thornton rode him to a win last time out over 1350 metres on this track. I think that he will be right in this race,
Couldn’t Refuse (6) raced over 1835 metres last time out at Eagle Farm and I just think he is better placed at the mile. Look for an improved effort here back to a distance that he really thrives at – Jim Byrne will ride.
Puntura (3) is trained by Barry Baldwin and does race better on rain affected tracks – if the rain comes and the track deteriorates, he is the likely winner – Mark Du Plessis will partner him again.
Tokoriki Lad (1) – well depending on what one comes to the races probably determines his winning chances. He would just slay this field on his last start win at Eagle Farm. Has had a month between runs and has had a recent barrier trial – no claim either this weekend with Stephanie Thornton to ride.
Selections:
2 – Tumbler Ridge 6 – Couldn’t Refuse 3 - Puntura 1 – Tokoriki Lad
Race 7
First leg of the treble over a mile.
The infamous last race the other week where Pentito (17) defeated Mob Buster (4) in the last race – well that was the original result until the photo was reviewed and the placings were altered by the stewards and correct weight declared. Pentito (17) is trained by Jason Edwards, and I think he will get the mile – Sam Collett will ride him again – maybe the owners can celebrate this weekend!
Mob Buster (4) will race honestly again and cannot be overlooked – Ryan Maloney will ride again for Kelly Schweida Racing.
Indiscreetly (14) is trained by Danny Bougoure and Michael Cahill will ride. She resumed with a solid second on the Gold Coast – second-up she will be ready to win and is well placed.
Relucent (10) is trained at Port Macquarie by Paul Shailer – Jimmy Orman will ride – drawn terrible here – maybe will need some luck – will appreciate the mile.
Selections:
17 – Pentito 14 – Indiscreetly 4 – Mob Buster 10 – Relucent
Race 8
Open race here 1110 metres. Some good quality horses going around here.
Weona Smartone (6) resumes here for David Vandyke with Kyle Wilson Taylor to ride. He has had three solid trials in preparation for the resumption to racing. Drawn well, he is the $2 favourite – I think that on paper he looks the winner – just would rather see him post a win before I get on at those odds – he has had a 32-week spell as well.
Gollan Racing Mass Destruction (11) will love the speed in this race and should be finishing off over the top of them late. He raced in Listed and Group races last prep and didn’t disgrace himself – down on the minimum here with a solid trial under his belt. Drawn well, Ben Thompson aboard and the rude odds of $17 on offer I think I know what one I will land on here!
Legal Espirit (7) has been very good for Donald “Ducky” Baker since resuming from a spell. Adin “Notorious” Thompson will ride him again. He won on him last start sitting off the speed and getting the job done decisively late. Coming back in distance, he goes down in weight and with the solid speed in this race I believe he will be very competitive here.
Winside (10) is better suited over this distance – trained by Corey & Kylie Geran – Larry Cassidy will ride. Keep safe.
Selections:
11 – Mass Destruction 6 – Weona Smartone 7 – Legal Esprit 10 – Winside
Race 9
The last race – Class 6 over 1200 metres.
Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted train Kingston’s Here (5) with Boris Thornton to ride – resumed and was disappointing when a short-priced favourite. He is better than that. A ten week freshen up now. Silly odds for a horse with a tremendous record at $9.
Sweet Margot May (14) resumed with a solid win for Robert Heathcote Racing – Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride. She has drawn well to get the run of the race – just some concern with the poor second up efforts. The way she won first up – she looks like she is in store for a solid preparation.
Manhood (12) returned to the Gold Coast track and posted a win last time out after he was sent out a short-priced favourite two starts ago here and was disappointing. I think that this Annabel Neasham trained runner has the chance to return to the winners stalls again and post consecutive wins with Brodie Loy to ride.
Arentee (8) had a wonderful first preparation – trained by Chris Meagher and Ben Thompson will ride. Resumes after a 14-week spell and a recent barrier trial win shows me that he will be competitive here. The early markets posted him $9.50, and he has been smashed in the betting into $4.80. This stable rarely miss when they back their runners.
Some nice rough chances here with Desert Dreamer (7) and Mill Rossa (10).
I think it is a nice trifecta to end the day.
Selections:
14 – Sweet Margot May 5 – Kingston’s Here 8 – Arentee 12 – Manhood Rough chances – (7) Desert Dreamer & (10) Mill Rossa ____________________________________________________________________

Many that have chances here - Boris Thornton, Ben Thompson, and Kyle Wilson Taylor. I think Boris could get the job done here at some nice odds!

WINNO V FLEMO
The battle continues this weekend with WINNO and FLEMO. FLEMO is back from Birdsville – great calling and coverage of this unique Carnival mate!
Shame about your Broncos – they were no better than my Bulldogs in the end!
Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
