NO CIGAR, BUT STILL A HEALTHY RETURN FROM DALBY CUP DAY FOR THE GERAN STABLE
By Graham Potter | Saturday, September 17, 2022
Co-trainers Corey and Kylie Geran would have been forgiven had they left the track shaking their heads after the Dalby Cup meeting on September 17.
The stable saddled six runners on the day and came away with three runner-up results and two third place finishes … but in a game as competitive as horseracing, the Corey and Kylie Geran know, as well as anybody else, that second place is better than third place … and so on, meaning that they would have put their day in perspective and been pleased enough with their Dalby Cup Day efforts.
Irish Sally finished second in a QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap over 1200m in only her second career start, finishing just 0.80 lengths behind the more experienced, Michael Nolan trained Radiant Queen. Irish Sally had finished third on debut so this run, with Alisha Donald in the saddle, would appear to have represented natural progression on the part of the three-year-old daughter of Vancouver.
In A Minute Riley, who was also ridden by Alisha Donald, could not have closer to the win without getting the result when he was touched off by the narrowest of margins by Ironside in the Plough Inn Cup Maiden Plate over 1400m. This result suggest at a win might not be far away for the Spill The Beans mare who has now placed in five of her eight starts.
Jack be Lucky (Alisha Donald) finished second in a BM65 Handicap over 1200m, beaten 1.50 lengths when starting favourite at $2.70. You will struggle to find a horse with a better level of overall consistency than this son of Holy Roman Emperor, but he is also a little bit luckless having finished second in no less than seven of his last eleven starts … and one of those defeats was by a lip and another two by only a half-a-length margin. For the record, his other four results over those eleven starts were three wins and a third place.
The Gympie Muster Cup Open Handicap winner Vinasta was one of the two Geran trained runners to claim a third place on the day, claiming that result in the Dalby Cup itself … while Dreamseeker also third, coming in just behind his stable companion In A Minute Riley in the Plough Inn Cup.
Hopefully the stable was just warming up for the big Weetwood day on their home track at Toowoomba on September 24, where they will have several chances top earn a place in the winner’s enclosure.
