WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, OCTOBER 1, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 30, 2022
EAGLE FARM this week. The track rated “GOOD”. The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit. Just keep your eye on the track rating. The NRL Grand Final is on Sunday – contested by two NSW teams – Penrith and Parramatta. Billed the “Battle of the West” in front of a sold-out stadium I just hope that the game is better than the AFL farce last week. For the record Penrith by 16 to win – Nathan Cleary or Dylan Edwards for Man of the Match. I hear that James Goves is heading to the NRL Grand Final – he has had to get me to write him a reference to get him a visa to enter the great and superior state of NSW. I will be on the lookout for the social media posts of him wearing a Penrith jersey at the Grand Final – I am certain he will not have the balls to wear the trashy Broncos jersey that he currently owns! Straight into the preview.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day. Race 1
We start the day off with a race for this season’s two-year-old runners.
Les Ross seems to have launched an assault in the race with 5 of the 10 runners – that must be some type of record.
Sharryn Livingstone trains Heroic Eagle (2) won well in a nice trial in solid time when ridden by Corey Bayliss – he retains the ride for the colt’s debut run – ideally drawn – should be difficult to beat.
Mishani Renegade (3) is one of the Les Ross Racing runners who has been working well and trialling well. Jimmy Orman will ride.
Sunday Mail (5) won a recent trial at Deagon for Gold Coast trainer Lee Freedman – Sam Collett will ride.
The Chris Munce trained She’s A Rogue (10) has been well supported since the early markets opened – keep safe.
Always pays to follow the money on the morning in the lead up to these races! Selections:
2 – Heroic Eagle 3 – Mishani Renegade 5 – Sunday Mail 10 – She’s A Rogue Rough chance – (1) Felix The Scat Race 2
Distance race over 2400 metres. Only eight runners.
Chris Waller Racing has two runners – Otyrar (2) and (5) Za Ceibas.
Last time out Otyrar (2) won a midweek race – looks like he can go on with it here – Jimmy Orman will retain the ride.
Za Ceibas (5) was run down late in the shadows of the post by Tappy’s Lad (3) when they met last time on the Gold Coast. Sam Collett rides again, and a tongue tie goes on here - look for an improved effort.
Tappy’s Lad (3) relished the heavy surface winning last time out – maybe will struggle on a firm surface. Ben Thompson will ride again.
Top Order (1) has not bothered the judge in 55 weeks (the last time he won) – however, in saying that his best runs recently have been here at Eagle Farm when Taylor Marshall rides – maybe it is his turn to win this race. Selections:
2- Otyrar 1 – Top Order 3 – Tappy’s Lad 5 – Za Ceibas Race 3
Open race over 1400 metres.
Annabel Neasham Racing is well represented with Plundering (1) and Narnia (3). Both are last start, impressive winners.
Plundering (1) went well to the line when he won at the Gold Coast on a heavy track. Despite carrying the heavyweight here, he is the best of her runners and could post a hat trick of wins and be undefeated in three career starts after this race. Brodie Loy will ride the gelding.
Narnia (3) is the stable mate who won in a midweek race last time out. He steps up in distance and looks ideally placed by the stable - Stephanie Thornton will ride.
Boom Court (2), trained by Desleigh Forster, was narrowly run down by Narnia (3) at his previous start. I think the extra distance and this track will suit him and does meet that runner much better at the weights for that defeat – Jimmy Orman will ride.
Honkytonk Diva (4) was first past the post when resuming at Doomben when resuming from a spell - the race was ultimately taken off him in the steward’s room when a protest was lodged and upheld. He may be ready to show something here again. Selections:
1 – Plundering 2 – Boom Court 3 – Narnia 4 – Honkytonk Diva Race 4
A distance race here over 1800 metres.
Moktaffy (7) won here in a midweek race nearly a month ago and has since won a barrier trial at the Sunshine Coast. He looks ideally placed in this company and, with Jimmy Orman riding and drawn well, he should get the run of the race and deserves to be the favorite.
Artic Wolf (5), trained in the north of the state by Olivia Cairns, posted a win last time out at Mackay over this distance - he will race midfield and should be belting home late wide on the track – Brodie Loy to ride.
Too Much Class (10) trained by Jack Bruce looks like she has been crying out for this distance – looks for a sharp improvement after her recent runs over a mile. She likes firm tracks as well – right up her alley.
Go Darcy (12) trained by Scott Morrisey likes the distance and track – do not overlook. Selections:
7 – Moktaffy 5 – Arctic Wolf 10 – Too Much Class 12 – Go Darcy Race 5
Last leg of the early Quaddie. The race has been decimated by some early scratchings. Weona Smartone (1), trained by David Vandyke, won first up despite an alarming drift in the betting when he resumed at Doomben. He has a huge weight to carry – but his record speaks for itself with 11 starts for 9 wins. Ryan Maloney has been booked to ride him.
Osamu (7) looks the likely danger – loves this track and should be ready to fire after a month to freshen up. He despises wet tracks and will get a hard surface here this week – no excuses down in the weights – Ben Thompson will ride.
Pizonie (8) is another runner who thrives at Eagle Farm and second up looks well placed. He will be storming home late – with the intense speed in the race they could all destroy each other in front and Stephanie Thornton could be smoking her pipe at the rear of the field before unleashing his customary sprint late – keep safe at $14. Selections:
1 – Weona Smartone 7 – Osamu 8 – Pizonie 2 – King Klaus Race 6
This is the first leg of the Quaddie. A race over 1000 metres.
Flaming Conquest (8) gets out fast and goes fast – she will jump and run from barrier 2 with Georgina Cartwright in the saddle. Trained by David Murphy she is looking for a hat trick of wins in this race. I cannot see her getting beaten.
On Hold (6) made her debut on her home track at the Sunshine Coast for David Vandyke where she ran nice time. If she can translate that form to the Eagle Farm track, I think she is a genuine contender here – Michael Cahill will ride.
Northern Express (3) is resuming from a 13-week spell for the Michael Nolan yards in Toowoomba. This gelding is undefeated at this distance and always races well fresh. Jasmine Cornish will claim 3 kilograms off the weight and that makes this runner appeal. He will race midfield and, with some solid speed in front, he may be the one storming home late out wide.
Larrikin Rogue (11) is a QLD Rogues runner trained by Chris Anderson – Stephanie Thornton will ride him again after winning on him in his debut start. The transition to Saturday grade may be a drama – but I am certain that QLD owners will be cheering in the stand if he can post a win – I suppose at least that will give them something to cheer about this weekend with no NSW team in the NRL Grand Finals! Selections:
8 – Flaming Conquest 6 – On Hold 3 – Northern Express 11 – Larrikin Rogue Race 7
First leg of the treble over a mile. This time a BM75 over 1000 metres.
Fetch (9) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted. She won at a midweek race here over this distance two starts ago. Then stepped out at Doomben on a heavy track and wasn’t disgraced. I think she is one that likes to be on top of the ground and we should see her return to the winning stalls in this race – Ben Thompson will ride.
Mischief Managed (7) from Gollan Racing yards was well supported in the markets last time out – really did not fire a shot. In saying that she was second up – look for a better effort here. Her third up form is exceptional with 3 starts for 2 wins and 1 second. Jimmy Orman will ride.
The stable mate is Shamaton (3) who has been heavily backed in the markets since they have opened. I cannot have him here – he resumes from a 15-week spell – hasn’t posted a win in 46 weeks – has not won first up ever. You know what is going to happen now – a WINNO EGG ON FACE moment! Ryan Maloney will ride.
Ruby July (11), trained by Michael Lee, resumed at Doomben and faded badly late. Three weeks between runs – down in the weights as well - she likes the track and has a great second up record. She could be the one to get the bookmakers cheering at the huge odds of $26. Adin “Notorious” Thompson will ride the mare. Selections:
9 – Fetch 7 – Mischief Managed 3 – Shamaton 11 – Ruby July Rough chance – (1) Gemelon Bolt Race 8
Open race here over the mile – many chances.
Schweida Racing has Mob Buster (8) looking for a hat trick of wins with Ryan Maloney keeping the ride. Solid last two wins would suggest that he will get the job done here again.
Vendidit (12) is trained by Glenn Thornton – he won here two starts ago over 1835 metres. He had three runs in three weeks and has had a freshen up since. A month between runs now I think that he could sprint well over the mile with Stephanie Thornton to ride – the tongue tie goes on here – look for a bold effort.
Jetty (10) from Munce Racing had a checked run in the straight last time out – maybe an improver.
Bottega (2) loves this distance – was sent back to midweek grade by trainer Lee Freedman last time to get a victory. Now he has won again – maybe he can find the winning post again – Jimmy Orman to ride.
Selections:
8 – Mob Buster 12 – Vendidit 10 – Jetty 2 – Bottega
Race 9
The last race – BM85 over 1200 metres.
Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted train Birriecart (13) with Samantha Collett to ride – resumed with a barnstorming victory at Doomben – races here for the first time – has a superb racing record – 5 starts – 4 wins. He deserves to be the favourite in the race – he will be in front of my selection throughout the running. I just hope my selection gets a run out wide and can catch him late.
Sweet Margot May (11) resumed with a solid win for Robert Heathcote Racing – then got too far back second up and got beaten by an eye lash. She has drawn well to get the run of the race – Ben Thompson will ride. The way she has run in her two starts since resuming she looks the one to beat here – GET ON! I think it is a nice trifecta to end the day.
Tara Jasmine (8) was sensationally backed here two starts ago and won easily. Had no luck last time out at the Gold Coast – she will thrive with the genuine speed in the race – I think that she will be the widest runner in the straight with Tegan Harrison yielding the whip to get her home in the shadows of the post. I am certain Grafton based trainer John Shelton will be at the track looking for another win with this mare. They have taken the blinkers off and put winkers on for this run.
Hot Spring Gold (6) is a QLD Rogues runner trained by Chris Munce. He has had a freshen up since winning his past two starts at this track – not sure how he may fare over 1200 metres – but he has not been defeated at Eagle Farm – Brodie Loy will be looking to for consecutive wins on the gelding. Selections:
11 – Sweet Margot May 13 – Birriecart 8 – Tara Jasmine 6 – Hot Spring Gold Rough chance – (5) Miss Devine Em _____________________________________________________________________ Jockeys Challenge

The battle continues with WINNO and FLEMO. FLEMO is back at Eagle Farm after a trip to Toowoomba. Not sure who he is tipping in the Grand Final – would be hard to see him tip a NSW team! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
