EN POINTE MAKES A MOCKERY OF HER ODDS

The Better Than Ready filly En Pointe was by far the lesser fancied of the two runners trainer Robert Heathcote sent into action in a BM62 Handicap over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast on September 23.
En Pointe’s stable companion Kernel Boom was priced at $3.60 … being the third favourite behind Kobe Lad ($2.80) and Jamaican Rumba ($3.30) … while En Pointe, in spite of winning her previous start, ending up as the longest-priced runner in the five-horse field at $9.50.
As the old saying goes though, En Pointe didn’t know what price she was and she duly made a mockery of her odds, coming home under a confident ride by Jasmine Cornish to secure back-to-back wins … in only her third start … by an emphatic 2.50 length margin from the second placed Kobe Lad while also beating her stable companion to the tune of 8.60 lengths.
As another old saying goes … the smaller the field, the bigger the upset.
Jamaican Rumba and En Point disputed the early lead, with Cornish happy to position En Pointe just over half-a-length back, hard along the outside of Jamaican Rumba, always letting the narrow leader know she was right there, waiting to pounce.
The heat got too hot for Jamaican Rumba who fell away quickly soon after straightening as En Point strode to the lead and proceeded to make a mess of the opposition, pulling clear with real authority to claim an eye-catching win.
With this second successive win, En Pointe, who had finished third on debut in an 800m dash at Dalby before shedding her Maiden ticket over 1000m at a Poly Track meeting at the Sunshine Coast (also with Cornish in the saddle), has advanced her prize-money earnings to $63 550 from only three starts.
Her racing experience now includes now includes starts over three different distances (800m, 1000m and 1100m) on three different surfaced (good going, soft going and the synthetic surface).
