WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, OCTOBER 8, 2022

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, October 6, 2022

EAGLE FARM this week. We have 10 races as well – featuring the XXXX QLD Cup.

The track is rated ‘Good’ at the time of writing. The rail is out 2 metres for the entire circuit. There may be some rain later in the week – so keep your eye on the track rating.

The track raced probably the best it has in months last Saturday – hopefully we will get the same uniformity across the track.

The NRL Grand Final was on last week some may have remembered my fearless prediction “for the record Penrith by 16 to win – Nathan Cleary or Dylan Edwards for Man of the Match” – I got them right and some people who followed me in won some cash!

Not sure what we will be watching for sports in the coming weeks with no NRL and AFL – however, the racing is warming up in Victoria.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

We start the day off with a race for this season’s two-year-old runners – the girls step out.

Les Ross has launched an assault on the race with 5 of the 9 runners – that was hot on the back of 5 in a 10-horse field last week where he got the chocolates. He seems to have great success in these early season races every year.

Mishani Jetstream (7) is one of his runners here – a solid barrier trial would suggest that the $16 on offer is a little silly despite the short-priced favourite in the race – I think each way this one is a solid bet – Jimmy Orman who rode the stable winner last week partners the filly here.

Miss Coota (1) is the short-priced favourite from the Chris Munce Racing yards – a solid trial winner. Justin Huxtable rode her in the trial and retains the ride here – he will be riding her hard at the end of the race to get her across the line.

Arabian Fox (3) from the Lee Freedman Racing team won a trial at Deagon by 7 lengths – looks a ready-made runner. Samantha Collett will ride her in her race debut.

Selections:

7 – Mishani Jetstream
1 – Miss Coota
3 – Arabian Fox
5 – Keyboard

Race 2

The boy’s version for the two-year-old runners to face the starter here.

Not to be outdone here Les Ross Racing have 6 of the 9 runners in this race!

I like Sage Advice (8) who is making his debut with Tegan Harrison aboard. I thought his trial was good enough to suggest that there was some upside and I think he will be ready to race well here.

The stablemate Mishani Raider (9) made his debut in Toowoomba and was heavily supported late in the betting and stormed home late to finish a gallant third. A larger straight and wider track - look for a bold improvement.

Lee Freedman trains Sunday Mail (9) and Sam Collett will ride. The is some “mail” around for this runner after he won his trial at Deagon. He has drawn well in barrier 5 and should race well.

A topical tip would have to be Risky Investment (7) trained by Tom Button with Luke Tarrant to ride. It probably could be “risky” for Luke if his girlfriend Samantha Collett is in front of him in the final strides and he ends up beating her in the race – I suppose the loser must shout dinner!

Selections:

8 – Sage Advice
9 – Sunday Mail
2 – Mishani Raider
7 – Risky Investment

Race 3

A small field over 1600 metres. A couple of these backing up from last Saturday.

Jetty (1) led and held on late last Saturday in a blanket finish for trainer Chris Munce. This week he will be ridden by Boris Thornton.

Mob Buster (2) ran in the same race and will strip fitter for the effort – Ryan Maloney will ride.

Jimmy Orman combines with Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott with Silent Impact (3) who ran in a 1400 metre race last time out at Randwick – that was second up, and he seemed to look like he needed that run. I think the mile will suit and he should be difficult to hold out here.

Mississippi Prince (5) has won his past two starts on heavy tracks at the Gold Coast – on both occasions surging away at the end to suggest that he will appreciate the mile. The Brent Gray trained gelding has an impressive record of 8 starts 5 wins and 1 second – he will be ridden here by Matthew Powell.

Selections:

3 – Silent Impact
5 – Mississippi Prince
2 – Mob Buster
1 – Jetty

Race 4

A race over 1600 metres that I am keen on – however, I have found some value in some of my selections.

The Robert Heathcote trained Drive A Deel (14) won at a midweek meeting at his last effort – maybe can go on with it here. Jimmy Orman in the saddle.

Rations (9) was second up on the Gold Coast last time out and I think probably was looking for longer and a firmer track. He should get those conditions here for trainer Barry Baldwin and Jim Byrne will ride.

Bahamut (7) was unwanted in the betting first up by trainer Daiki Chujo and got up to win easily. I think that he will appreciate the step up to the mile and Nori Masuda will be looking to get him home again for consecutive wins.

Goldeel (8) looks well placed and should race well here.

Green Flash (10) is a rough chance.

Selections:

14 – Drive A Deel
9 – Rations
7 – Bahamut (dual acceptor race 10)
8 – Goldeel
Rough chance – (10) Green Flash

Race 5

The three-year-old runners race here over 1200 metres.

I am staying with the track specialist Exo Lady (1) who is trained by Desleigh Forster and will be ridden by Jim Byrne. She resumes here on a track where she thrives. There is some speed in the race – I expect Byrne to sit in behind the speed that should give her a nice trail into the race and win the race at around $10 (if only it was that easy).

Tony Gollan trains Deer Trail (10) who won on debut at a midweek race at Doomben. Looking at that effort, she will appreciate the step up and distance and should be improved by that run. Ben Thompson will ride her for the stable and she looks well placed and has been backed since the markets have opened.

En Pointe (3) is trained by Robert Heathcote and has won her past two starts. She is very speedy and will assume the lead and will be hard to run down in the straight with Tegan Harrison riding. She does step up to metropolitan grade, but I just think that there may be something about this runner to suggest that she may just be able to cause an upset – keep safe.

Diamond City (7) is trained by Annabel Neasham - comes here second up. Look for a bold improvement on a firm track – Stephanie Thornton will ride.

Selections:

1 – Exo Lady
10 – Deer Trail
3 – En Pointe
7 – Diamond City

Race 6

Last leg of the early Quaddie due to the ten-race program – the XXXX QLD CUP.

Only a small field to face the starter. I think a few of these will struggle to run out a genuine 2400 metres.

Tappy’s Lad is trained by Kerry Taplin and is on the quick back up from a race over 2400 metres here last week. Ben Thompson retains the ride. Just think that maybe at the weights he could cause an upset at around the $16 mark.

Barade (2) trained by Jack Bruce will certainly run out a solid 2200 metres – but given the right circumstances he may be able to find that extra 200 metres. He has performed well here with 3 starts for 2 wins on the track and Jim Byrne will ride again.

Mohican Heights (3) is a Chris Waller Racing runner who has been performing well in Sydney and has been sent north in the quest of winning a race. Samantha Collett will ride him and, going on his recent efforts, he should be extremely hard to beat as he will be able to run out a solid 2400 metres.

Seat Of Power (1) is in a rare form winning his past two starts for trainer Jack Duncan. Jimmy Orman retains the ride here and I just think he may struggle carrying the huge weight. In saying that his form has been exceptional in his past five starts finishing first or second. He must be respected in this race.

Selections:

9 – Tappy’s Lad
3 – Mohican Heights
2 – Barade
1 – Seat Of Power

Race 7

First leg of the Quaddie - Class 3 over 1200 metres.

There is some value here – these races are always difficult – play wide.

Better Get Set (8) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted. She resumed at the Gold Coast on a heavy track which did not suit her, however still finished off powerfully in the straight I think that she will be better for that run and will be extremely hard to beat here at $10. Ben Thompson retains the ride - drawn well with speed in the race she gets the perfect conditions to score second up.

Extremist (9) is only lightly raced and is trained by Robert Heathcote. She resumed with a solid win first up in a midweek race where she looked strong and she should be competitive here with apprentice Angela Jones riding and taking 3 kilos off for her claim.

The stablemate is Hatchet (3) who will be ridden by Kyle Wilson Taylor. I would think that he would be looking to finish in front of Angela in the race just for bragging rights and to see who buys dinner later Saturday night. This runner was extremely disappointing last start out when heavily backed – needs a quieter ride to get the best out of him in this race.

Miss Super (11) raced here two starts ago and perform very well. She then went home to Grafton and posted a very win with Anthony Allen riding her on that occasion. She is trained by Fleur Blanch, is only lightly raced and gives me the opinion that the 1200 metres is right up her alley. I think her chances will be enhanced if there is some rain around on Saturday and the track is a little damp.

Richard & Will Freedman train Noble Beauty (15) who had no luck last preparation striking wet tracks – she is no good on wet tracks – in fact hopeless. I think that on this firm track we could see a major upset at around $41 – she has had two trials in preparation for the resumption here – huge odds – could be a huge upset – Jim Byrne will ride.

Selections:

8 – Better Get Set
9 – Extremist
11 – Miss Super
15 – Noble Beauty
Rough chance – (3) Hatchet

Race 8

Open race here over 1400 metres. First leg of the treble.

Battleton (9) is trained by Bjorn Baker Racing in NSW – this runner has had a good look at the Eagle Farm track in winter running placings in Group 3 races. He has some hoof-filler this weekend – maybe some concern – and the winkers are going on here. His first up effort was just a pipe opener – he will strip fitter for that effort, and I expect him to be very competitive down on the minimum here – Jim Byrne will ride.

Matowatakpe (7) is trained by Jack Bruce – I don’t think he appreciated racing week to week last time out. He has had a fortnight off and the blinkers go on here. I think that he is right in this race. Ben Thompson will ride him again and with a solid tempo on he should enjoy a nice trail into the race – especially with the long straight.

Stardome (5) won first up on the Gold Coast on a wet track at huge odds – probably was suited by the race conditions and a 10 out of 10 ride by Jimmy Orman – not sure if he can back that up here.

Turn On The Charm (6) raced over a mile last time at Randwick – I think back in distance here and a three week freshen up he could sprint well in this small field. Ryan Maloney takes the ride for the powerful Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stables.

Selections:

9 – Battleton
7 – Matowatakpe
5 – Stardome
6 – Turn On The Charm

Race 9

A 1000 metre sprint – a large field. There is some serious speed in this race – they may destroy each other in front if they take each other on.

Gollan Racing has two runners that are both second up – Le Palmier (1) and Shamrock Lu (2).

I think that, with the speed in the race, Shamrock Lu (2) is the best placed of his team to sit in behind the speed and then let down late. Jimmy Orman will smoke his pipe and then hopefully get a run and win!

Blackjack Boom (7) was unsettled behind the barriers when resuming at Doomben. He has a very good second up record. Trained by Edmonds Racing – they have Angela Jones aboard – 3 kilograms off will make his chances even better with no weight to carry. Will appreciate the speed on as well and should let down late.

Hamlet Von Snitzel (6) is trained by Robert Heathcote – normally doesn’t come to the track ready to win first up – however, with the speed on they may elect to let him jump and settle from barrier 12 and he may just be able to get over the opposition late.

Desleigh Forster trains Aidensfield (11) resuming here from an 18-week spell – could sprint well. She is drawn well and should just get a nice run-in transit with Mark Du Plessis to ride.

Selections:

2 – Shamrock Lu
7 – Blackjack Boom
11 – Aidensfield
6 – Hamlet Von Snitzel
Rough chance – (1) Le Palmier

Race 10

The last race – race 10. I will sleep well tonight!

This is the biggest field of the day – I hope you are in front when you get to this race!

There are a few emergencies that could be very competitive if they get a start.

Cool Lad (22) is long odds to get a start however, this Matthew Smith trained runner is well placed on the minimum weight with Michael Cahill to ride. Is fourth up here and should be ready to do something after a solid run last time out at Rosehill when he worked home nicely to run fourth.

Bahamut (19) is a dual acceptor from race 4 – read the preview there – however, if he takes his place in this field, he will be competitive here as well.

Zuma California (2) won nicely last time out at the Gold Coast. He is trained by Cameron Richardson and will be ridden by Angela Jones. He has drawn terrible in barrier 21 – will have to ride for luck I think – but he does like this track.

I Am Lethal (4) is trained in NSW by John O’Shea – second up here with Brodie Loy to ride. I think will be better placed on a firm surface – does not enjoy shifting ground.

Nishikori (8) is trained by Matthew Dunn and raced well last time out on the Gold Coast. Should improve here from a nice barrier draw.

Rejoiced (9) - I liked him last start at Toowoomba now trained by Pat Webster – Bubba Tilley rides. He worked home well last time out – maybe the new stable has got him ready to fire here. Drawn well and may show up at huge odds.

You may have to play wide here depending on what runners end up facing the starter.

Selections:

22 – Cool Lad
19 – Bahamut
2 – Zuma California
4 – I Am Lethal
Rough chance – (8) Nishikori & (9) Rejoiced

JOCKEY CHALLENGE

Looking at Jimmy Orman, Ben Thompson, and Jim Byrne. I think one of the Jim’s will win – stay with Jimmy Orman again this week who is riding in career best form.

I must take the opportunity to wish Jimmy well next weekend in the feature race – THE KOSCIOUSKO when he rides Far Too Easy for David McColm at Randwick).

WINNO V FLEMO

The battle continues this with WINNO and FLEMO. I think I may have just pipped him last weekend – it was a poor effort from both of us to be honest. Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
