WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, OCTOBER 15, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 14, 2022
EAGLE FARM this week. We have 10 races as well – just like last Saturday here. The is track rated “GOOD”. The rail is out 4 metres for the entire circuit.
Massive racing in Sydney this weekend and we are well represented with horses, trainers, and jockeys. Kyle Wilson-Taylor, Jim Byrne and Jimmy Orman are all on some wonderful chances on such an amazing day – wish all of them and the representatives from QLD all the best.
Victoria – well we have woken to distressing scenes on Friday to Melbourne and regional Victoria subjected to flooding. Hopefully everyone remains safe, and the Caulfield Cup program will go ahead. The scenes at Flemington and the adjacent stables were quite confronting. Our thoughts and prayers for everyone in this unfolding challenging natural disaster.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
Les Ross has five of the ten runners in this two-year-old Handicap. His charge Mishani Renegade (1), who won on debut impressively, looks like he can go on with it here. He goes up in weight however, they have gone for the claim with the impressive apprentice Jasmine Cornish who will claim 3 kilograms. He should get similar conditions as he did when he won – there is some serious speed engaged and he will just sit in behind – with the claim he is weighted well.
Flying Trapeze (3) is trained in NSW by Gary Portelli. The stable has a huge opinion of this son of Trapeze Artist. They also believe he is no good on wet tracks. His debut at Randwick on the heavy surface was admirable. He will get a rock-hard track here to see if the wraps on him are accurate – Brodie Loy will ride.
Chris Munce trains She’s A Rogue (7) who led on debut and was run down by Mishani Renegade (1) on that occasion. She will strip fitter for that effort and be competitive here with Michael Cahill to ride this week – he has nice hands and seems to get the best out of two-year-old runners – keep safe.
Trifling (10) from the Helen Page stables on the Gold Coast won a recent trial impressively – drawn well and could be the one to give the bookmakers a nice result – Ben Thompson will ride her in her debut run.
Selections:
1 – Mishani Renegade
3 – Flying Trapeze
7 – She’s A Rogue
10 – Trifling
Rough chance – (8) Mishani Metallic
Race 2
Class 3 over the mile.
Rations (3) raced well last Saturday and is on the quick back up. He was second up last week, and it appeared as if he needed the run – he will be much better for that effort – look for a winning effort here – Boris Thornton will ride for trainer Barry Baldwin.
Smytzer (4), trained by David Vandyke, won last start on his home track over the mile. Steps up to Saturday grade but looks a little progressive – Ryan Maloney will ride again.
Irish Homie (2) has the winkers going on here for trainer Bevan Laming. I think he will prefer the mile and longer – he should improve here on a firm surface – Larry Cassidy will ride.
Highlights (1) was heavily backed last time out for Cody Morgan. He got too far back and had to make up too much ground late – back in distance and the claim for Angela Jones does make him an appealing chance.
Keep one safe here at around $71 – Reflecting Image (11) trained by Greg Cornish and to be ridden by his daughter Jasmine. Refecting Image is second up and is looking for some distance – maybe with the solid tempo in the race she might working home late. This is just the second run for the new stable.
Selections:
3 – Rations
4 – Smytzer
2 – Irish Homie
1 – Highlights
Rough chance – (11) Reflecting Image
Race 3
A small field over 1400 metres. Not a fan of the race.
Garnett Taylor trains Bold and Lucy (8) who is first up after a 14-week spell. She has a solid first up record – and has a recent barrier trial where she wasn’t extended. I like the claim for Wendy Peel – could be a nice rough chance at around $17.
Cinque Torri (1) looks the likely leader from the NSW stables of Bjorn Baker who won the XXXX QLD Cup last Saturday. This runner posted a win last time out when unwanted in the betting at Warwick Farm over the distance – a claim for Angela Jones will see him get nicely into the race.
Five Crowns (6), trained by Kris Lees Racing won first up at Newcastle – will have Andrew Mallyon to ride who has returned from injury and is riding well – hopefully he will be able to still find his way around Eagle Farm without Siri or a GPS to assist him – welcome back mate!
Night Guy trained by Will & Peter Hulbert backs up after a solid third last Saturday – the stable apprentice Adin Thompson will ride.
Selections:
8 – Bold and Lucy
1 – Cinque Torri
6 – Five Crowns
10 – Night Guy
Race 4
A distance race here over 2218 metres.
Not a race that I am keen on – however, have found some value in some of my selections.
The Robert Heathcote trained Sergeant Silva (9) won at a midweek meeting at his last effort. Jasmine Cornish in the saddle so will carry no weight and may just go on with it here. Heathcote trained a treble here last week – the stable is in form!
The Chris Waller pair of Otyrar (2) and Za Ceibas (9) will go well. Otyrar (2) is the pick of his runners after winning here last time over 2400 metres. Larry Cassidy will ride him.
Za Ceibas (5) didn’t cope with the 2400 metres last time out – coming back in distance may help him in this race. Sam Collett who has ridden him to a win previously will ride again.
Red Wave (7) will be partnered by Ben Thompson – trained by Sears Racing, turned in a nice run in the Toowoomba Cup when finishing third – keep safe.
Selections:
2 – Otyrar
9 – Sergeant Silva
7 – Red Wave
5 – Za Ceibas
Race 5
The three-year-old runners race here over 1200 metres. Only a small field to face the starter.
The Lee Freedman runner Soothsayer (1) defeated the Desleigh Forster trained Boom Court (2) a fortnight ago here.
I think that their battle will be waged again this week – with the result going the same way!
It will be Sam Collett versus Boris Thornton in the saddles.
Chris Munce Racing has Brookhaven (5) in the race – comes off a winning effort midweek at the Sunshine Coast when resuming. Could just go on with it here in this small field with some speed on. Justin Huxtable will ride.
Yellow Brick (4) from the Sears Racing yards will appreciate the firm ground and will be competitive.
Selections:
1 – Soothsayer
2 – Boom Court
5 – Brookhaven
4 – Yellow Brick
Race 6
Last leg of the early Quaddie due to the ten-race program – Class 3 over 1000 metres.
Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted train Stellar Magic (11) who resumes here after a 19-week spell. She raced in Listed races last time in and was very good. She has had a recent trial where she won well. She looks well placed – ideally drawn and should prove too hard to beat here – Ben Thompson will have her placed in the running to get the job done.
Argyle Lane (1) is trained by Joshua King and Michael Murphy will ride him again. Hopefully Michael has invested in a razor prior to the meeting and had a shave! He has ridden this gelding three times for three wins. Can he continue the 100% strike rate in the race? He had a nice trial recently to get him ready for this first up effort and at $7 is great each way value.
Do not underestimate the chances of the stablemate (2) Enabler – could show up here fresh.
Amity Gal (9) is a David Vandyke runner who has resumed and won both her starts from a spell. Looks ideally placed by this astute trainer to get another result for the owners – Ryan Maloney will ride her again looking for a hat trick of wins.
Selections:
11 – Stellar Magic
1 – Argyle Lane
9 – Amity Gal
2 – Enabler
Race 7
First leg of the Quaddie a No Metro Win over 1200 metres.
There is some value here – these races are always difficult – play wide.
Better Get Set (13) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted. She resumed at the Gold Coast on a heavy track which did not suit her, however still finished off powerfully in the straight. I think that she will be better for that run and will be extremely hard to beat here at $5. Ben Thompson retains the ride and drawn well with speed in the race she gets the perfect conditions to score second up. She was scratched last Saturday – she will be heavily backed come race day.
Fumiko (14) has the tongue tie going on for this race – trained by Kirsten Buchanan and Taylor Marshall will ride. She is a lightly raced mare with a wonderful first up record – has had a look at this Eagle Farm track earlier this year in April. I think that the recent trial would suggest that she is forward enough to be hard to hold out.
Maybe Mix (4) can get in amongst them and mix them up here. He is trained by Lee Freedman and I think he was looking for 1200 metres after his first up run. The gelding has a solid second up record and a wonderful record over this distance. Sam Collett retains the ride.
Expectant (9) could improve on his last start effort at Toowoomba – not sure if he enjoyed the track. Back to this larger track. Look for an improvement.
Selections:
13 – Better Get Set
14 – Fumiko
4 – Mix
9 – Expectant
Rough chance – (7) Amore Veloce
Race 8
Open race here over 1820 metres. First leg of the Treble.
Moktaffy (14) is from the Chris Waller Racing team on the Gold Coast. He resumed a fortnight ago after a four week freshen up. He just seemed to peak on his run late. I think that after the solid hit out he looks ideally placed here in this race and will be difficult to beat – Mark Du Plessis will ride.
So Dapper (8) won last time out here a fortnight ago. He led all the way with Larry Cassidy setting the speed in front and getting away with blue murder. I expect that he will not get his own way in front here, but he certainly cannot be overlooked after his last start win.
Supergiant (6) is an Annabel Neasham runner who is third up. He has been racing in NSW and has despised the heavy tracks in his past two starts. He is a runner that thrives at Eagle Farm I expect him to be right in this race with Brodie Loy aboard – I think the bookies have got it wrong with $10 on offer for this runner. Clearly on his day he would slay this lot.
Traduce (4) trained by Maryann Brosnan is getting back to a distance that should suit him – Samantha Collett should have him making a sprint late down the outside of the field.
Keep a watch on Slow Hands (5) from the Kelly Schweida Racing team. Has been very well supported since the markets have been posted – I always have thought he goes best on wet tracks – but the stable must think he is a genuine chance here in this race with Ryan Maloney to ride.
Selections:
14 – Moktaffy
8 – So Dapper
6 – Supergiant
4 - Traduce
Rough chance – (5) Slow Hands
Race 9
A 1200 metre sprint – only a small field now with some scratchings.
Looks like the result a few weeks ago at Toowoomba in the Weetwood is the form to follow.
With the small field here, I think that Tony Gollan runner Mass Destruction (7) who has been very unlucky in both his runs since resuming should get the chance to post a win – Ben Thompson will ride him again and he should get the job done here for punters.
The stable mate Ef Troop (8) is third up and has Angela Jones riding. Her claim gets him in well – keep him safe.
Axe (2) won the Weetwood – trained by Jack Bruce and will be ridden again by Samantha Collett. He does go up in weight for that victory, but he is a quality sprinter – just some concern for me racing on this Eagle Farm circuit for the first time.
Selections:
7 – Mass Destruction
2 – Axe
8 – Ef Troop
5 – Last Chance
Race 10
The last race – race 10. I will sleep well tonight!
Sweet Margot May (11) was given a 12 out of 10 ride by Ben Thompson last time out. She has come back looking like she can have a good preparation. Steps up to 1400 metres here. Just hope she can get the trip and it will be get in the line and collect! Robert Heathcote seems to have her firing now.
The horse that I fear the most is the Chris Munce Racing runner – Hot Spring Gold (13) with Brodie Loy aboard. He loves this track and thrives at this distance – last time he worked home late after a brief spell to suggest that he would be better for that run. He is owned by the QLD Rogues – you know how much I hate QLDERs! But like the QLD team look for a late dash in the final stages – can he win in the final stride?
Tara Jasmine (14) thundered home late last time. She can be a little tardy out of the barriers. However, if she jumps cleanly, she will be really flying home late down the outside - Tegan Harrison retains the ride and she knows this John Shelton trained mare well.
Rathlin (15) must be watched from the Hoysted & O’Dea yards. Has been heavily supported in the markets – it is rare that when the money comes for this stable’s runners that they do not win or run boldly. Boris Thornton will ride – just barrier 16 is some concern for me.
There are a few other rough chances that could fill a place.
Selections:
11 – Sweet Margot May
13 – Hot Spring Gold
14 – Tara Jasmine
15 – Rathlin
Rough chance – (16) Indiscreetly & (2) Rubamos & (5) Gave Us Up _______________________________________________________________________
Jockeys Challenge
There are many that have chances here. Samantha Collett, Jasmine Cornish, Ben Thompson, and Ryan Maloney. I think that Ben Thompson has a strong book of rides – he should get the job done!
