WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, NOVEMBER 12, 2022
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, November 10, 2022
DOOMBEN this week. We have 9 races with the track rated “Good”. The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Shocking news earlier in the week with the talented and very promising apprentice Jasmine Cornish suffering a fall in a barrier trial. We all wish her a speedy recovery – she is a wonderful jockey who was just starting to make her mark in South-East Queensland racing – all the best Jasmine!
Into the tips this weekend.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
Solid two wins in trials for the Robert Heathcote trained Abounding (2) looks like the way to start the day despite the very short odds that are on offer – Ben Thompson will ride.
Only danger I can see if the Desleigh Forster trained Salt Lake Betty (4) with Jimmy Orman aboard.
Selections:
2 – Abounding
4 – Salt Lake Betty
3– Diamond Heels
5 – Skirt The Lane
Race 2
Another small field to face the starter here with the Chris Waller trained runners having the race between them.
Otyrar (3) posted a solid victory last time out and Sam Collett retains the ride - looks ideally placed again to get the job done.
The top weight is the stablemate – Stardome (1) who does normally perform well at this distance and could upset the more favoured stablemate in the market - one thing for sure is that Jimmy Orman will be doing everything to win the race.
Selections:
3 – Otyrar
1 – Stardome
5 – So Dapper
2 – Ligulate
Race 3
Tony Gollan trains Saweetie (13) who resumes here on the minimum weight with Ben Thompson in the saddle. She trialled well recently and looks well placed first up. She has always shown some ability – maybe she can cause an upset here.
Way To The Stars (5) is the NSW invader trained by Matthew Smith. He resumed with an all the way win at Warwick Farm and since then has had a barrier trial which he won impressively. He has been heavily supported in the markets since they opened and continues to firm - Ryan Maloney will ride him here.
Zingalong (6), trained by Trevor Miller, resumed at Eagle Farm and nearly caused an upset at huge odds only going down narrowly. Since then, he has won at Melbourne Cup Day on his home track at the Sunshine Coast – Matthew Powell will ride.
Selections:
13 – Saweetie
5 – Way To The Stars
6 – Zingalong
11 – Orphan’s Trust
Race 4
Confessed (3) missed that start last time out at Eagle Farm when defeated by her stable mate. This runner is trained by Kris Lees and if she can jump away with them, I expect her to be right in the race. She was also held up in the straight and Michael Cahill who retains the ride here had to steady her off heels before making a late charge.
Zoukina (1) won at huge odds last time out at this track and distance for Ballina trainer Stephen Lee. This week she must carry a mammoth weight that will be offset by the claim for Jaden Lloyd. Keep safe.
Bold and Lucy (5) is second up for Sunshine Coast trainer Garnet Taylor - it appeared that she may have needed the run first up, however she put in a solid performance and Ryan Wiggins will ride here.
Selections:
3 – Confessed
1 – Zoukina
5 – Bold and Lucy
7 – Giulia
Race 5
Drive A Deel (5) has been racing in wonderful form for the Robert Heathcote yard winning her past three starts. Looks well placed here in this race over a mile with Ben Thompson to ride. She demonstrated she could win on the heavy last time out and I would expect her to win this race.
Too Much Class (8), trained by Jack Bruce, won at a midweek race. Again, will race well with Mark Du Plessis to partner her here. Up in class – but down in the weights and should be respected.
Lasting Kiss (3) will be ridden by Bubba Tilley – she is on the quick back up after a victory at the Gold Coast last Saturday.
Selections:
5 – Drive A Deel
8 – Too Much Class
3 – Lasting Kiss
6 – Joy Too All
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie.
I think that the key to the race is the small field and the pace that is engaged.
In saying that the Tony Gollan runner, Count Da Beans (7) has blinkers and a tongue tie going on after being sent out a heavily backed favourite second up and being beaten by the stable mate. He is drawn well and will be in the speed battle with a couple of other runners who will scoot along here – I just think he may be exposed late.
Robert Heathcote seems to be having some great success in recent weeks. I think that his runner Ekaterina (4) who stormed home late out wide on a day where leaders had some distinct advantages was an enormous effort. With the small field and on a track where they can normally make ground successfully, she may be the one finishing off strong late – I am prepared to take the $8 on offer that she can beat the favourite. Kyle Wilson-Taylor retains the ride.
Stroll (2) resumes for Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted – a recent trial under her belt after a 23-week spell after winning the Listed Bill Carter would suggest that she is forward enough to bother these other runners late. Boris Thornton will ride.
Northern Express (1) is second up with the blinkers on – Jaden Lloyd will ride - will strip fitter after a solid effort when resuming two weeks ago.
Selections:
4 – Ekaterina
7 – Count Da Beans
2 – Stroll
1 – Northern Express
Race 7
First leg of the Treble. Massive field with many chances.
Brian Smith trains Alburq (3) who posted a win a fortnight ago with Boris Thornton riding – they combine again here. Steps up in distance, but they way he surged to the line last time would suggest that Mr Smith will be chanting “Dolly, Dolly” if he can win again. Plus, it is always great to see Darren Wilson winning races in town – I think he owes me a big bear hug if he wins!
Menazzi (5) was heavily supported when resuming over 1000 metres which was not his go. I think the extra distance will suit him here – Jimmy Orman aboard. Maybe a dramatic improvement will be noted as he is undefeated second up – with two starts for two wins.
Ocean Emperor (12) posted a win at Ipswich last time out over this distance for trainer Jack Bruce. Angela Jones will ride him here and he will be handy in the running and be somewhere in the finish when the judge calls a halt to the race.
Hatchet (13) is another Heathcote Racing runner – on the quick back up from last Saturday when sent our favourite and was beaten. Not sure what to make of that effort, but I think he is better suited over this distance – Ben Thompson goes on here.
Bahamut (15) drops back from a mile to the shorter distance. This runner is much better over this 1350 metres and despite the terrible barrier draw he will appreciate the solid speed and will be rattling home late.
Selections:
3 – Alburq
5 – Menazzi
12 – Ocean Emperor
13 – Hatchet
Rough chance – (15) Bahamut
Race 8
The Keith Noud sprint over 1200 metres – Listed level.
Looks like a race that will be dominated by the Gollan Racing stable – in fact I think, with any luck, he will trifecta the race.
I like Salateen (8) who resumes here on the minimum to get the job done first up. She won a recent barrier trial and will appreciate the genuine speed in the race set by some of the speedsters. Look for her to flash late with Stephanie Thornton to ride.
Proper Rogue (9) has been in career best form. He has won his past three starts – all wins have been good. He drops in weight and gets into this race very well. Ben Thompson will ride – he is up in class, but he just keeps on winning and must be respected.
Garibaldi (4) resumes as well – a recent trial winner – Ryan Maloney aboard who has a tremendous strike rate aboard Tony Gollan trained runners. Again – he will enjoy the speed on and will be sprinting late.
Holyfield (2) is trained by Annabel Neasham – Brodie Loy in the saddle. Had a recent barrier trial and resumes here after a 17-week spell – he was super in his last preparation and commands respect.
Miss Devine Em (11) resumes from a six week freshen up – her last start was too bad to be true – no excuses either in the steward’s reports. However, she does have a very good fresh record and could cause a huge upset at $41 with Tegan Harrison to ride. She may just like wet tracks – but I think that she may sprint well.
Selections:
8 – Salateen
9 – Proper Rogue
4 – Garibaldi
2 – Holyfield
Rough chance – (11) Miss Devine Em
Race 9
Well, it is the last race!
“Last Race” Larry Cassidy has no ride this week – BOO to all the trainers for not finding him something to ride!
Rob Heathcote Racing could finish a stellar day with Extremist (10) with Angela Jones to ride. She has won three in a row and loves this track and distance – the claim for Jones will be handy as well.
Enterprise Pomme (9) resumed a fortnight ago and will strip fitter for that effort. Does meet Extremist (10) worst at the weights for that loss – however, she normally goes well second up – Boris Thornton will ride.
Arentee (7) resumes here for Chris Meagher – a recent barrier trial winner. He was super in his first preparation and won some nice races. He needs to show something here for mine though. I do think he is a nice type and if he returns well to racing after the eight week freshen up, he could make this field look silly and slay them. Just would like to see him perform well again before I jump back on – Ryan Maloney will ride.
Orbisyn (5) won first up at Ipswich for David Vandyke – he loves to lead and is drawn well enough to ping the start and set up the speed in front – could just keep going and win – Michael Cahill rides him for the first time.
Kevin Kemp has had winners at the past three weekends in town and he steps up here with Five Oxford (11) who won at massive odds first up with Taylor Marshall aboard. There is a good man who owns this gelding – none other than Con Searle – you see he turns 80 in a few weeks and is probably looking to get another win at huge odds at around $31. Five Oxford does love this track – has an excellent second up record – this could well be a blow out in the last race. When he won last start, he looked like he was bolting and had nowhere to go – somehow Taylor Marshall seemed to find some gaps and get him home in the final bound to win – maybe a huge way to end the day!
Selections:
10 – Extremist
9 – Enterprise Pomme
7 – Arentee
5 – Orbisyn
Rough chance – (11) Five Oxford _______________________________________________________________________

There are many that have chances here. Angela Jones, Ben Thompson, and Jimmy Orman. I think that Ben Thompson has a strong book of rides – he should get the job done!
