WINNO'S WINNERS: SUNSHINE COAST, NOVEMBER 19
By Darren Winningham | Friday, November 18, 2022
Sunshine Coast this week … with nine races. The track rating is ‘good’ and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
The two-year-old’s start off today's program.
On The Amazon (5) a first starter from the Maher & Eustace stables makes his debut here after a solid trial at Warwick Farm – Ryan Maloney will ride. Keep your eye on the markets – there has been some early money for this runner. Blinkers go on here for the first time.
Chrysaor (3) was heavily backed on debut at Doomben and just seemed to peak on his run late. Trained by the powerful Chris Waller Racing team and Jimmy Orman will ride again – some gear changes – a lugging bit goes on so I would expect an improved performance.
Shamedy (2) won on debut at Rockhampton – Graeme Green trains this gelding. Keep safe as the time and sectionals were impressive – Bubba Tilley retains the ride.
Selections:
5 – On The Amazon 3 – Chrysaor 2 - Shamedy 1 – Boomster
Race 2
A BM78 over 2200 metres.
Another Maher & Eustace runner sent north here looking for a victory – Kings Charisma (1), who will be ridden by Ben Thompson. Won the Horsham Cup two starts ago prior to running at Rosehill over 2400 metres – just did not seem to stay the distance – I think he should be better over the slightly shorter trip here.
Stuart Kendrick trains Hillcrest Avenue (9) who stormed home behind Red Wave last time out at Doomben. He is back on his home track where he is undefeated with two starts for two wins. Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride – looks well placed.
Tony Gollan and Ryan Maloney combine with Coup De Tonnerre (5) who finished fourth in the same race as Hillcrest Avenue (9) – with some improvement could cause an upset.
Selections:
1 – Kings Charisma 9 – Hillcrest Avenue 5 – Coup De Tonnerre 12 – Gambo Rough chance – (6) A Deel Of Humour
Race 3
Soothsayer (2), trained by Lee Freedman on the Gold Coast, turned in a solid effort last time out at Eagle Farm. I think he will be suited to this track and should run a bold race – Boris Thornton will ride.
Affogato Girl (1) is trained by Kacy Fogden and will be ridden by Ryan Maloney. Posted a win last time out at Ipswich over the shorter distance of 1350 metres - she looks a promising type that should get the mile.
Cash Me (4) destroyed a field at the Gold Coast by over 10 lengths to win his maiden. If he reproduces that effort he will win this race easily – Ben Thompson will ride for trainer Jack Bruce.
Selections:
2 – Soothsayer 1 – Affogato Girl 4 – Cash Me 3 – Tapildoodledo Race 4
This is my best roughie for the day from the Chris Munce stables – Outback Gladiator (11). It went around last start at Randwick in the little dance feature race and was not disgraced. Stepping up in distance slightly for this run will suit him and with Mark Du Plessis to ride I think at around the $20 mark he is a wonderful each way chance.
Jakkalberry Finn (2) is trained on the track by David Vandyke - he won his last start over this distance and looks well placed in this class. I think he will be hard to beat coming off that winning effort last start – Ben Thompson will ride.
Moktaffy (3) looked flat first up after a month freshen up at Doomben a fortnight ago. He previously had posted a win at this distance at Eagle Farm – look for an improved effort this week from this Chris Waller Racing runner with Jimmy Orman aboard.
Selections:
11 – Outback Gladiator 2 – Jakkalberry Finn 3 – Moktaffy 14 – Noah N A Deel
Race 5
On paper Tony Gollan has the chance to trifecta the race with his three runners. However, I think Barry Lockwood could upset the party with his runner Johnny Rocker (4) with Samantha Collett in the saddle. This colt was super in his first preparation. He has had a recent trial when beaten by All That Pizzazz (3). I think that he will be stronger after that trial and could cause an upset in this race.
The hot pot is Golden Boom (6) from the Tony Gollan yards who debuted with a dramatic win here on this track. Was impressive on that occasion and, to be fair, looks ideally placed for his second career start - Ryan Maloney retains the ride and he will be extremely hard to beat.
The stablemate is All That Pizzazz (3) who trialled well recently. He was also strong in his first preparation, winning three consecutive starts and commands respect in this field. He gets the ideal run to trail behind the leaders and the speed and he could be the one that finishes over the top late. Jimmy Orman will ride.
Hidden Wealth (9) is the final Gollan Racing runner. He made an impressive career debut over the short 800 metres at Ipswich, winning in good time. Looks to have above average ability and should be respected in this field with Stephanie Thornton to ride.
Selections:
4 – Johnny Rocker 6 – Golden Boom 3 – All That Pizzazz 9 – Hidden Wealth
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie over 1400 metres.
I like a genuine each way chance here from the Kris Lees stable at Newcastle – Ucalledit (5). His performance second up was good when beaten at Doomben last time out. I expect that he will take some benefit from that run, and I think stepping up to the 1400 metres this week will suit him – Andrew Mallyon will ride.
The early favourite is Logan Street Lion (9) who won first up on Melbourne Cup Day at Eagle Farm for the Chris Waller racing team. On that occasion he carried a huge weight and does drop in weight for this run, however I am just unsure of the quality of horses he beat first up at Eagle Farm, and he may just get caught out here in this race. He is too short in the market to back and I have gone wide looking for some value.
Starvirgo (7) was unwanted in the markets first up for Robert Heathcote Racing and I think surprised the stable when he got home and won over 1110 metres at Doomben. He does race well fresh and with some speed in this race may be flashing home late with Jaden Lloyd to ride him again.
Fleetwood Maca (11) won on debut for the new stable and has an undefeated record second up with two wins from two starts. I am certain that trainers Steven O'Dea and Matt Hoysted will be looking to keep his undefeated record in QLD going in this race. He has previous solid form up to the mile when racing in Melbourne so the distance will be of no concern this weekend - keep this one safe.
Selections:
5 – Ucalledit 9 – Logan Street Lion 7 – Starvirgo 11 – Fleetwood Maca
Race 7
First leg of the Treble. A solid sprint race over 1000 metres.
Sneaky Five (4) resumes for her new stables – Gollan Racing. She trialled recently and I think that she will race well here. She always races well fresh – two wins first up from three starts. Jimmy Orman will ride her for her first start in QLD and I think that the 1000 metres will be right up her alley.
Je Suis Belle (9), a Mark Currie runner who is second up, has a wonderful record on this track. She also thrives at this distance. Ryan Maloney will ride for the first time and with some solid speed in the race she will do well.
Goldsborough (6) is trained on the track by Gary Duncan and Ben Thompson will ride. He has had six starts on his home track and has never been out of the money. I think he will run well and must be respected.
Master Jamie (3) has some serious ability – just maybe too short for him – however, a classy type that cannot be left out. He has had two trials to get him ready for this first up assignment – Bubba Tilley will ride.
Selections:
4 – Sneaky Five 9 – Je Suis Belle 6 – Goldsborough 3 – Master Jamie Rough chance – (2) Simply Fly
Race 8
The feature race is the Mooloolaba Cup over the mile.
Is it the case of second “Last Race Larry” this week with the Kevin Kemp trained Linthorpe Lad (10)? Cassidy is looking for a hat trick of wins aboard this runner from Toowoomba. His last start win was full of authority, and he will be strong to the line here.
I think he may be in trouble with a local runner from the David Vandyke stable – Without Revenge (16). The first time I saw this gelding in the yard was at Doomben two weeks ago and to be fair he looks nothing like a typical European runner. He is a very impressive type and I think that he will win this race and maintain this undefeated status in Australia - gets into the race with only 52 kilos and Tegan Harrison will ride.
Chris Waller Racing is represented with She's The Gift (8) who resumed at Rosehill in the Group 2 Hot Danish. She has drawn wide in barrier 15 – however, she has a good second up record. Samantha Collett, who continues to ride winners, will be looking to get her home!
Gave Us Up (14) is a Barry Baldwin runner who is value at $19. Down in the weights here – forget last time out when he was caught wide in the race won by Linthorpe Lad (10) – look for a better run-in transit from Jaden Lloyd here and is a genuine chance at odds.
Dzsenifer (5) is trained here on the track by Gary Duncan. He will probably be better for the run – but he loves this track and distance and must be respected. Taylor Marshall continues to keep his association with this gelding and would love nothing better to move “all in” and straight past Larry Cassidy in this feature race after Cassidy nailed him in the final bound back in July in the Glasshouse Handicap.
Aussie Nugget (9) is a genuine rough chance from Gollan Racing – loves the mile.
Selections:
16 – Without Revenge 10 – Linthorpe Lad 8 – She’s The Gift 14 – Gave Us Up Rough chances – (5) Dzsenifer & (9) Aussie Nugget
Race 9
Well, it is the last race!
“Last Race” Larry Cassidy – never had a ride in the final race last weekend. He has the ride aboard the Joshua King trained Enabler (9). The loyal followers will scream – yell and cheer – not me this week Larry – you can possibly win the last two races – but I think you will struggle in this one! Last time I had a crack at him I ended up with egg on my face! It is Cassidy 1 – WINNO – 0.
This runner gave nothing a chance when Cassidy rated him in front to perfection at Doomben last time out – not sure if he will get it his own way this week with some other speed runners engaged.
I think Better Get Set (13) to see Cassidy go down! Trained by Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted she was very good winning three weeks ago at Eagle Farm – she thrives on dry ground and will enjoy some speed in the race. Ben Thompson will get the job done for WINNO and send Cassidy back to Brisbane lamenting what may have been!
Majestic Shot (11) is a Grant Allard trained runner with Jimmy Orman aboard. Has an excellent second up record and did run a super race first up when defeated by Simply Fly (Race 7 – number 2). I think that he gets in nicely with a solid tempo in the race – the wide track will assist him as well.
Anethole (8) from the Cody Morgan stables in Tamworth raced in the Kosciusko last time out at Randwick. That is solid form for this race. He wasn’t disgraced and will be suited by the race conditions – Andrew Mallyon will be looking for a win to end the day.
Selections:
13 – Better Get Set 11 – Majestic Shot 9 – Enabler 8 – Anethole ____________________________________________________________________
Jockey Challenge
Ryan Maloney, Kyle Wilson-Taylor, Ben Thompson, and Jimmy Orman are all in the running. I think that if they retain their current rides (no scratchings) there will be a dead heat between Jimmy Orman and Ryan Maloney!
