STEADY READY TICKS ALL OF THE BOXES

By Graham Potter | Saturday, November 26, 2022

No matter which way you look at it, Steady Ready’s runaway win at the Gold Coast on November 26, in a BM75 Handicap over the 900m dash, ticked all of the boxes.

The highly rated colt was sent out in fine racing trim by the Tony and Maddysen Sears training partnership for his first-up run from close to a three-month layoff from race competition.

His reappearance was always going to be one of the focal points of the meeting as the son of Better Than Ready has attracted special interest since March 8 when he trashed his rivals to the tune of 13.30 lengths in a trial at Toowoomba.

A debut win in town (at Doomben on March 22) when again romping in by 5.75 lengths only enhanced an already burgeoning reputation, but then Steady Ready had to settle for two successive second placings ... behind two smarts ones in Exo Lady (who, at the time, had won four out of five starts) in the Listed Dalrello Stakes and behind Flaming Conquest (who, at the time, had won three of her four starts).

There was nothing wrong with either of those two efforts, but after Steady Ready pulled up big after his exertions on the soft track in the second of those runner-up finishes, the Sears camp elected to turn Steady Ready out and give him some time off.

Then it was on to the Gold Coast.

As mentioned, Steady Ready’s performance at the Gold Coast was everything the stable would have wanted it to be.

With apprentice Angela Jones in the saddle, Steady Ready, who started at the restrictive odds of $1.75, had the speed to protect the advantage offered by the number one barrier draw and he duly railed up to lead after the field had travelled 100m.

Boogielu ($11) and Cosmic Serenade ($18) did try to stay with and pressure Steady Ready in the first half of the race ... this trio raced some six lengths clear of all other runners in the approach to the home turn ... but they would soon fall away after the turn to be beaten by 11.30 and 9.30 lengths respectively.

That left Steady Ready out on his own in front on straightening and, with no meaningful challenge coming out of the pack, the Sears trained runner was able to relentlessly extend his lead in the home straight, having the race won a long way from home.

Steady Ready simply could not have been more impressive, scoring in the end by a 4.30 length margin, in spite of Jones easing Steady Ready down over the closing stages.

Steady Ready’s two career wins (from only four starts) have come by a combined margin of ten lengths and stable star has already banked $156 450 in prize-money.
He will shortly head to his assignment in the $750 000 King Of The Mountain at Toowoomba on New Year’s Eve.
