IPSW DEC 10 - MR BOOGIEWOOGIE TROUNCES HIS OPPOSITION
By Graham Potter | Saturday, December 12, 2009
Ipswich, December 10, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 6m. Class 1 Handicap - 1690m. Time: 1-42.88. 1 Mr Boogiewoogie; 2 Dalai; 3 Miss Trish.
The Desleigh Forster trained Mr Boogiewoogie romped home to score the easiest of victories. It was the gelding’s second successive win and came in his first attempt beyond 1350m.
The wide draw could have been a minor complicating factor, but jockey Jim Byrne took any disadvantage out of the equation by chasing Mr Boogiewoogie around his field with the minimum of fuss to take the lead early in the contest.
Once in front Byrne’s experience ensured the tempo he set was one to suit his mount so that when he asked Mr Boogiewoogie to extend in the sweep to the turn the gelding had plenty left to offer. Mr Boogiewoogie straightened four lengths ahead of the second placed Dalai and there was a similar distance back to the struggling pack.
Mr Boogiewoogie never let up in the straight and he went on to win by 5.50 lengths. A cakewalk … an armchair ride … call it what you will. It was a thoroughly convincing performance.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Desleigh Forster: “Yeah, I’m very pleased with him. Like we always knew once he gets over a bit of ground, that’s when he’d come into his own. Once he gets to even further … 2000m, even further … he’ll come into his own. He’ll be a horse you’ll be able to ride with a sit … put him in the box seat or ride him anywhere you want.
“So now he is going to go out and have a month or so off. Then he’ll come back and we’ll get him ready for a few longer races. He’ll probably go to town. A lot of the distance races in town are pretty weak so, if I can place him nicely, he might pick up a nice few races in town.
“He is bred to stay and he is probably only getting to the age where he is starting to mature now. He is lightly raced (this was Mr Boogiewoogie’s eighth start). We bought him as a ready-to-run horse. Every-time we had him ready he kept going a bit sore. He kept going sore so we just had patience … and more patience.
“It just needs patience and time and it will pay off. It’s amazing. People don’t realize how cheap and how valuable patience is. Patience is the go.”
Jockey Jim Byrne: “The horse is looking for further. Obviously today was the first time it’s been stepped up past 1400m. It was a nice enough win. The horse is going out for a spell now and he’ll be all the more improved for that.
“He did get some pretty soft sectionals today, but the horse is very dour and I think once he comes back he’ll be better again.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Mr Boogiewoogie): 2.30 out to 2.70 in to 2.60. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Mythical King (J. Holder) jumped away awkwardly, resulting in Bouillabaisse (M. Hellyer), Cooly Road (J. Taylor), Mr Boogiewoogie (J. Byrne) and Minus One (K. Forrester) all being hampered. Dalai (N. Evans) raced three wide in the early stages until near the 1000m.
A post race veterinary examination of Cooly Road revealed the horse to be lame in the off-foreleg and to be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer W. Sutton was advised that he must provide a veterinary clearance for Cooly Road, including the results of an ECG.
