FLEM JAN 30 - WELL TRAVELLED TALLOW WINS VANITY

Flemington, 30 January 2010. Track - Good 3. Rail - True. The Mittys Vanity (Group 3 - 3yo Fillies - Set Weights) - 1400m. Time: 1-23:52. (Carrying 54kgs) 1. Tallow, 2. Misty Blue, 3. Absolute Faith.
Three year old filly Tallow has clocked up her fair share of miles over the past six weeks.
Having won at Randwick in December, the daughter of Street Cry travelled north to compete at the rich Magic Millions carnival on Queensland’s Gold Coast earlier this month, where she ran second to Graceful Anna.
From there, trainer Anthony Cummings sent his charge south, where she lined up as race favourite at Flemington on Saturday in The Mittys Vanity (1400m).
Jockey Corey Brown took advantage of Tallow’s ($2.80 fav) inside draw and settled her second, three quarters of a length off leader Misty Blue ($9.50).
As the field made the sweeping Flemington turn, Tallow draw level with Misty Blue and together they slowed the pace to their advantage.
Straightening up, Brown was riding confidently on Tallow but Misty Blue, who was having her third start - her first on a metropolitan track - challenged strongly on the inside.
Together the pair raced to a two length lead at the 200m mark before Tallow, who always appeared to have the upper hand, asserted her authority to score an impressive length win over Misty Blue with Absolute Faith ($12.00) a further half length away in third.
“I thought we’d be running fifth, sixth even seventh.” Brown revealed after the race.
“The first furlong of the race I was a bit concerned that the two runners inside me were booting up underneath me and I didn’t want to come back and let them get the better of me, so I surged on to sit outside the leader.”
“Once getting outside the leader we really backed up quite noticeably and it was a sprint from the 600m to home.”
“She did well.”
Purchased by Magic Millions proprietor John Singleton for $30,000.00, Tallow looks set to continue her Australian road trip and head toward Adelaide for the South Australian Oaks.
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Tallow): 3.00 in to 2.80. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Umatain jumped away awkwardly. Orbiting Belle raced wide without cover throughout. Speedy Natalie was held up after straightening and failed to obtain clear running for a major part of the straight and as a result, went to the line without being fully tested. Umatain layed in under pressure in the straight.
L Nolen, when questioned regarding the performance of Salinas, could not offer any real excuses for the filly, given the favourable run it had during the race and suggested to connections that the filly may be in need of a gear change, that being the addition of winkers. A veterinary examination of Salinas revealed no abnormalities.
G Boss reported on the scales that Miss O’Brien, in his opinion, was distressed on pulling up. He added that the filly had sweated up badly prior to the race. Subsequent to the event, the Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that the filly had a slower than normal recovery rate.
