CLASS PREVAILS AS YOUTHFUL JACK WINS BRISBANE PLATE

By Graham Potter | Monday, June 1, 2009

Brisbane Plate (Listed) - 1400m. Time: 1-25.29.
Track - Slow 6. Rail - True.
1 Youthful Jack; 2 Geeza; 3 Little Mel.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Corey Brown (who was having his first ride on the twelve-time winner): “He’s probably in the same form today (as he was in recent starts) but he may have been just getting back a bit far in his races. He’s getting that little bit older and he might be getting that little bit lazier in the finish.

“It wasn’t really ideal on the track surface today. The big field in race two went along the inside and chopped the track up a helluva lot, so I was pretty keen to get out at least four or five wide from the 600m because of the track, but he had a good run in transit. I rode him five or six wide around the home turn to give him plenty of room to stretch out. I gave him a couple of cuts with the stick to wake him up because just watching his replays he seems to have been loafing in his previous runs, so that is why I was pretty keen to get stuck into him early today to make sure he was in the business end of things.

“We may well have got there a little bit soon - probably got half a length in front of the second horse and the second horse fought me right back down to a short-half-head in the finish. It was a good effort. He’s a lovely horse and he’s definitely going to be much better next time in, I reckon.

I reckon the true horse that he is, in my honest opinion, he would have won by two or three today, easy. I just reckon he might be looking for a break. Mate, I’m not the trainer, but that’s just what I feel ... but he’s done good. I’d love to say it was a great win, but it was a nice win ... a bit of a grinding win. Obviously on top of the ground he probably wins a bit better, but look he toughed it out well.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Youthful Jack): 3.40 out to 3.80.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Approaching the 300m High Roll’n Woman (G. Colless) had to be steadied when tightened for room between Jazz Heart and Youthful Jack, which was going forward to its outside. At the same stage N. Rawiller (True Tales), when attempting to shift his horse around the heels of High Roll’n Woman to improve was inconvenienced and obliged to shift out and in doing so hampered Sinful Warrior (B. El-Issa).

Approaching the 300m Little Mel was momentarily held up for clear running. At the same stage Dorf Command was also held up and unable to obtain clear running for a short distance.

Youthful Jack had a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages.
