EF FEB 13 - UNSUPERVISED TOO STRONG FOR HIS RIVALS
By Graham Potter | Sunday, February 14, 2010
Eagle Farm, February 13, 2010. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 1m. NMW Handicap - 1200m. Time: 1-09.16. (Carrying 53 kg). 1 Unsupervised; 2 The Sixties; 3 Haizum.
The Kelly Schweida stable has been experiencing a boom time in recent months and the run of success continued at Eagle Farm on Saturday when the lightly raced gelding Unsupervised landed his third win from his last four starts.
Jockey Larry Cassidy had the chestnut in seventh place on a strong speed set by The Sixties early. He improved up to sixth saving ground on the turn and straightened some four to five lengths off the leader who was not stopping.
With Unsupervised full of running, Cassidy angled his mount out to take a run between General Secretary and the tiring Cole Trickle. Once Cassidy got Unsupervised where he wanted him to be, he straightened his mount, balanced up and changed gears coming through the 200m mark.
From that moment, in spite of The Sixties striving to go on with, the race became an uneven contest as Unsupervised surged to the lead with 100m. He went on to win going away by a widening two length margin.
Unsupervised has now won four of his nine starts. He also has three minor placings to his credit.
Trainer Kelly Schweida: “Yeah, that’s three out his last four now. It wasn’t Jimmy’s (jockey Jim Byrne) fault the other day when he got beat. The three speed horses scratched in the race, you know, and he got left in front.
“This horse can’t lead. He has had a few breathing issues. He’s had throat operations, you know, so he just needs to relax in behind them like he did today. Larry (Cassidy) rode him well.”
Byrne has been an integral part of Schweida’s regular run of winners in recent months. So why wasn’t Byrne on Unsupervised this time around?
Schweida: “Jimmy doesn’t always ride him. Chris Munce won on him in his last win and Mitchell Wood won on him the run before. Yeah and Larry just happened to win on one of the owners other horses the other week ... Sequiz. So that’s how that riding choice came about.”
Jockey Larry Cassidy: “He just got a lovely run. You know, alleys make a difference because it just put me where I wanted to be. He is a horse ... Kelly (Schweida) said he’s got a few little problems, wind problems ... so you’ve just got to get him to relax. When I got that sort of run early I knew he was going to finish off easy.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Unsupervised): 4,00 in to 2.80. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Connections advised that Mr Boogiewoogie would be ridden further back in the field from the wide barrier. The horse was ridden accordingly.
Connections advised that The Sixties would be ridden from a rearward position from the wide barrier. Following the race, jockey J. Holder reported that The Sixties began extremely well and as a result he was obliged to ride the horse forward.
Connections advised that Unsupervised, which led last start, would be ridden with cover if possible. The horse was ridden accordingly.
Rapid Magic (T. Bell) and Millers Wheel (G. Colless) were slow to begin.
Near the 1000m, Mohawk (J. Bowditch) was checked when crowded for room between Cole Trickle (O. Turpin) and General Secretary, which after initially being taken in slightly by The Sixties (J. Holder), shifted in of its own accord. No direct action was taken but both C. Reith, rider of General Secretary, and J. Holder, rider of The Sixties, were advised to exercise more care in future.
Rounding the turn and in the early part of the straight, Stature (M. Speers) hung in and because of this M. Speers was obliged to change the whip into his right hand.
Apprentice T. Bell, rider of Rapid Magic, was reprimanded for using his whip more than five times prior to the 100m.
Jockey R. McMahon, rider of Truesdale, stated that the horse, which was having its first run from a spell today, travelled satisfactorily, but when placed under pressure in the straight gave ground quickly, and as it was well beaten he did not ride the horse out to the finish as he normally would. He was of the view that Trusedale would benefit considerably from today's run. A post race veterinary examination of Truesdale failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
A post race veterinary examinations revealed: Rattle ‘N’ Run - to have been galloped on on the off-hind leg. Stature - to have been galloped on on the near-hind leg.
