TOMMY BERRY HIT WITH A MASSIVE BAN
By Graham Potter | Tuesday, January 17, 2023
High-profile jockey Tommy Berry has been hit with a massive disqualification after fronting a Racing NSW steward’s hearing earlier today.
Berry was handed a disqualification of eleven months and two weeks after being found guilty on charges relating to his ‘accepting or agreeing to accept considerations’ from a punter ... as well as a charge of conduct prejudicial to the image of racing.
Under the rules of Australian racing, it is illegal for jockeys to accept considerations from anyone other than a horse's owner without the permission of the stewards.
On top of that, Berry was handed an additional suspension of four weeks after being found guilty on charges of having a mobile phone in the jockey’s room.
Berry's disqualification was to commence immediately upon the notification of the penalty (Tuesday, January 17) with the first disqualification due to expire at midnight on Sunday, December 31, at which time the second four-week suspension will kick in keeping Berry out of action until Monday, January 29, 2024.
It is believed that Berry’s immediate intention is to appeal his ban and apply for a stay of proceedings, so that he can continue riding until an appeal is heard.
