TONY GOLLAN HEADING INTO THE MILLIONS MAIN FEATURE RACES IN A VERY POSITIVE FRAME OF MIND
By Graham Potter | Thursday, January 19, 2023
Multi-Premiership winning trainer Tony Gollan is very happy with his runners going into the two $2 million races at the Gold Coast today ... the Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic and the Magic Millions Three-Year-Old Guineas.
These two races feature amongst the eight races that were postponed, moving from Saturday to Thursday, after Saturday’s meeting had to be abandoned after just two races had been completed.
“Skirt The Law (Gollan’s Two-Year-Old Classic entry) has been ticking along nicely since Saturday,” confirmed Gollan.
“We were very lucky we got that trial into her on the course proper at the Gold Coast (on December 29). I think that has kept her up to the mark nicely.
“It was also to give here a look at the Gold Coast track ... and the trial was run at nearly race pace, so it was a good, hard, solid hit out for her, which I think has held her in good stead for what is certainly going to be a track with a bit of give in it.
“I would prefer the track to get out of the heavy zone ... more so just because of the space between runs (it will be forty-seven days since Skirt The Law last raced) then any reason of her not getting through it.
“A soft track actually excites me. A soft track suits me better than a track like the week before where we ran on a really good 3. The soft ground is far, far more in my favour.
“Skirt The Law worked very nicely on the course proper on Monday morning.
“She’ll head into the race with no excuses.
“I’m also really happy with both of my Guineas runners (Spiritualised and Latakia).
“The benefit of them both racing the week before (on January 7) now stands them in very good stead fitness-wise.
“Latakia, particularly ... I think that soft ground is really her friend. She is a Deep Field filly and with that sort of pedigree I think she’ll love that sort of track to be honest.
“I think the hard tracks are not her complete go ... and I think that is the reason she was struggling the week before ... and then she got into her groove.
“A track with give in it will suit her better.
“With Spiritualised, I’m not so sure. I didn’t want heavy for him, but I’m certainly happy with him on soft.
“Both horses won last time and they are brimming with confidence ... and they are both nice and fit on what is an eleven day turnaround now as opposed to a seven day back-up.
“They’ve both worked well since they’ve come back. Spiritualised was very strong on Monday morning.
“They had a float trip down on Saturday. It didn’t hurt them. They are in good order. They look well. They are full of themselves. Their coats are gleaming. They are in good shape.
“It will be a good day no matter what ... Magic Millions Take 2 ... it’s something quite unique, and we will go into it very happy with our team.
