LITTLE MISS PIXIE'S LAST TO FIRST VICTORY
By Graham Potter | Saturday, March 11, 2023
It’s been a while (since November 2020 in fact), but the five-year-old mare Little Miss Pixie finally found her winning touch once again when landing a BM62 Handicap over 1210m at Toowoomba on March 11.
Interestingly enough, her previous win had come the last time she raced over this track and distance.
Georgina Cartwright has been doing a good job for the Sears camp and she was entrusted to take the reins on Little Miss Pixie on this occasion, and she had a job to do with Little Miss Pixie jumping from the worst of the draw (barrier ten out of ten).
The option Cartwright took was to take Little Miss Pixie back from the wide gate and tuck in behind the field, a strategy which saw her settle in last place, eight lengths off the leader in the first half of the race.
Little Miss Pixie was still last but saving ground on the turn, a factor which quickly saw her move up into fifth place when she moved out two wide on straightening, now with only a little over two lengths to make up.
Little Miss Pixie didn’t hesitate, taking a gap in-between two runners in the first half of the home straight and that only left the $8 chance Bringonthebubbles in front of her. A further marginal shift outwards and Little Miss Pixie increased her tempo and ranged up alongside and then went past Bringonthebubbles to score by a widening 0.50 length margin.
Was Little Miss Pixie’s task made any easier by the fact that the $2.20 favourite Just Engaged reared at the start and failed to take any part in the race?
Nobody will ever know ... but the bottom line is a win is a win and you take them whenever you get them!
