WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, APRIL 22, 2023
By Darren Winningham | Friday, April 21, 2023
Doomben this week – nine races with the track rated ‘soft’. The rail is out 3 metres for the entire circuit. There is some chance of rain in the lead up to the meeting – it could see a downgrade in the track conditions. Starting to see some excellent races in the lead up to the Brisbane Racing Winter Carnival.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
Tough race to open the program.
Not sure if I will be too interested – the Matthew Dunn Racing trained Oceans Of Energy (4) was impressive winning here three weeks ago. Ashley Morgan will ride – he has relocated to QLD and will be much sought after as he establishes himself.
Selections:
4 – Oceans Of Energy 9 – Brave Agenda 2 – Russian Alliance 5 – Flag Hall Rough chance – (6) Freeman
Race 2
Large field over 2200 metres. Very even bunch to face the starter.
Clyde was heavily backed last time out and looked the winner, however, was run down in the final stride by Stuck With You (1) who started at $31 on that occasion. Clyde is trained by Brian Smith and Larry Cassidy will ride.
Iowa (3) comes from the astute Mark Newnham stables in Sydney with Tom Sherry to ride. He is hopeless on a wet track – so if there is a downgrade in the track he will probably struggle. His last start was on a heavy track – forget the run, BUT if he strikes a better track, he will be super competitive. Smashed in the betting as well from $21 to $8.
Applications (4) is trained by Glenn Thornton with Boris Thornton to ride. He is third up here and must be respected.
Selections:
5 – Clyde 3 – Iowa 4 – Applications 12 – Flensburg Rough chance – (14) The Driller
Race 3
A race over the mile.
Alburq (5) ran a slashing first up effort over 1350 metres. Boris Thornton will ride again – the mile is more his go. Was beaten by a smart one last time out – keep safe. The astute Brian Smith trains this one.
Without Revenge is trained by David Vandyke (10) with Ryan Maloney to ride. This runner is now second up this spell and has a very good second up record. He was caught wide when resuming and looks like he will strip fitter for that effort.
Chris Waller Racing trains Rousseau (1), Jimmy Orman will ride. He resumed over 1350 metres – stormed home late – was an eye-catching run – that could just top him off for this mile race – keep safe.
Selections:
5 – Alburq 10 – Without Revenge 1 – Rousseau 6 - Aton of Delight
Race 4
Massive field – a fair few early scratchings over 1200 metres.
If Ring Of Steel (24) takes his place in this field (he is a dual acceptor) he will prove hard to defeat. He resumed from a spell at Ipswich for Kelly Schweida Racing and was very dominant – steps up from a maiden race – but gets in well here at the weights.
Miss Baltimore (12) is trained by Bryan Dias and Andrew Mallyon to ride. She was a very good second last time out at huge odds. I just think that they struggle to find races suitable for her. This race looks ideal. She also prefers the Doomben track and I think that drawn in barrier 8 she will be given every opportunity to win.
Canadian Dancer (2) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted – Jaden Lloyd will ride. She resumes here from a 16-week spell. A recent solid barrier trial suggests that she will be super competitive.
Do not leave out the Gillian Heinrich runner – Beaux Rumble (10) with Samantha Collett riding – he got run down late here a fortnight ago – may just prove hard to beat late.
Self Indulgent (9) a rough chance.
Selections:
12 – Miss Baltimore 2 – Canadian Dancer 24 – Ring Of Steel 10 – Beaux Rumble Rough chance – (9) Self Indulgent
Race 5
Sprint race – some good quality runners engaged over 1110 metres.
Sweet Margot May (12) resumed and won well first up. Robert Heathcote seems to be having some good success in recent weeks. Ben Thompson will ride her again. Drawn well and with the hot speed on she looks well placed to let down and sprint late and finish over the top of them.
Far Too Easy (2) is trained by David McColm with Jimmy Orman to ride him again. He had no luck in his recent preparation in NSW in some feature races. A recent barrier trial winner – looked a solid effort and will be in this for a long way.
Ef Troop (1) is a Gollan Racing runner – recent barrier trial winner as well. He loves this Doomben track with 9 starts – 4 wins and 4 placings here. Angela Jones will ride. The blinkers go on here as well.
The stablemate is Proper Rogue (6) who is around $21. Damien Thornton will ride. He has had a six week freshen up since resuming at Eagle Farm. I don’t think he really likes that track and always goes well on this circuit – he could be one to cause an upset at a huge price.
Boomnova (7) comes back after a brief freshen up (6 weeks) and she will be in the leading bunch for a long time. Chris Munce seems to place her well in every preparation and she is always very competitive.
Fifteen Rounds (10) could be another at a large price to show up.
Selections:
12 – Sweet Margot May 2 – Far Too Easy 1 – Ef Troop 6 – Proper Rogue Rough chance – (7) Boomnova & (10) Fifteen Rounds
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie – open field here over 1350 metres
The Gollan Racing pair look well placed. Argyle Pink (20) has drawn well here in barrier 2 with Angela Jones riding here again. She posted a solid win last time out on this track. I just think down in the weights and racing on the speed from a nice barrier she could be the one to get on.
The stable mate is Tilianam (16) with Kyle Wilson Taylor aboard. Bragging rights if he can beat his girlfriend! Solid effort last time out when beaten by her stable mate – I think that she will be going forward from barrier 3 and that may prove the winning factor.
Mississippi Prince (11) is trained by Brent Gray and Mark Du Plessis will ride. The gelding resumed with a solid win here two weeks ago. If the track is rain affected and the track is downgraded, you need to be on this one – he is an absolute duck in the wet – he will slay them.
Not sure if Manhood (14) will take his place in the field – the wide barrier is problematic.
Selections:
20 – Argyle Pink 11 – Mississippi Prince 16 – Tilianam 14 – Manhood Rough chance – (3) Indispensable
Race 7 PRINCESS STAKES – Listed Race
The first leg of the treble – massive field over 1615 metres at set weights.
I think the NSW trained runners look well placed here – could be some huge exotics if I get them right.
I like the Chris Waller runner Beautiful Heart (14) who won a maiden last start out. She is a lightly raced filly and, on that win, I think that she has plenty of improvement in her – Jimmy Orman will ride and she has drawn well in barrier 6.
Whisker to Whisker (15) is from John Thompson’s yards and Ben Thompson will ride. She last went around in the Adrian Knox at Randwick (Group 3). I think the 2000 metres was too long for her and back to the mile I expect a much better performance. Not sure if she appreciated the big heavy conditions. Maybe an improver on a firmer surface.
Street Gossip (11) is all the talk. From the Mark Newnham yards in NSW with Tom Sherry aboard. Again, only lightly raced – last start winner at Wyong. Some good sectionals – can maybe step up to this grade – looked progressive in that race.
Madam Odette (5) is trained by Tony Gollan and Ryan Maloney is aboard – this combination is lethal when they unite. She finished the race off nicely first up at Eagle Farm over 1400 metres – I think the mile will see her in the finish when the judge calls a halt to the race - $19 on offer is silly odds.
Wolverine (1) ran a nice race last weekend for Kris Lees Racing. That was over 1400 metres, and she is on the quick back up here with Andrew Mallyon riding again – barrier 15 is no help. She will appreciate the mile – if the rain comes that will not bother her either – just think she had every chance to win last weekend.
Selections:
14 – Beautiful Heart 15 – Whisker to Whisker 11 – Street Gossip 5 – Madam Odette Rough chance – (1) Wolverine
Race 8 CANADIAN CLUB TAILS STAKES – Listed Race
Open class over 1350 metres.
Nice race. Chris Waller Racing has Skyman (1) in the race – Jimmy Orman picks up the nice ride. He does carry a mammoth 60 kilograms. He is second up here over a distance over which he has won 5 times. His first up effort over 1500 metres at Rosehill was solid. He has had a month freshen up and a barrier trial since then. Looks well placed for mine.
Santero (15) has a string of wins since resuming. Trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted – she has had a month freshen up since her last win at Eagle Farm over 1835 metres. Jaden Lloyd retains the ride – he has a solid record on the mare – 3 rides – 2 wins and a second. A great winning combination.
The stable mate is Tumbler Ridge (7) – with Boris Thornton riding. Ran well over 1350 metres here last time out when a great second. He does like the mile and should be right in this race.
Dune Forty Five (14) just keeps winning since Robert Heathcote has taken over his training. Owned by the BRC Chairman Neville Bell – he just kept going from strength to strength. The winning form must not be underestimated. Kyle Wilson-Taylor who is two from two on him since he resumed keeps his spot in the saddle.
A rough chance to the Matthew Dunn trained Cephus (3) who comes back from harder races in Sydney.
Selections:
1 – Skyman 15 – Santero 14 – Dune Forty Five 7 – Tumbler Ridge Rough chances – (3) Cepheus
Race 9 MICK DITTMAN PLATE – Listed Race
Well, it is the last race! Another Listed race over 1110 metres. At set weights may be the key here.
Named after a distinguished QLD jockey – Mick Dittman.
This is an open race – I think you could have 8 picks and still miss the winner.
Swiss Exile (1) is the one I have settled on from the Annabel Neasham yards – Brodie Loy will ride. I really think the set weights sees this colt get in well against the opposition. He did race at Group 2 level last time out. People will be critical of my tip – he hasn’t won in 48 weeks. I keep going back to May 2022 when he won the Champagne Classic (Group 2) as a two-year-old. Maybe we will see history repeat nearly 12 months later!
Lady Laguna (8) is the stable mate who was a super run behind the Godolphin superstar Aft Cabin last time out when she ran a wonderful third in that race. That was in Group 2 company – another non-winner – last win 72 weeks ago. I just think sometimes these horses come out of the Sydney Carnival – come to QLD and seem to thrive in the warmer conditions and firmer tracks.
Golden Boom (6) is trained by Gollan Racing. Has been trialling super – resumes from an 18-week spell – drawn superbly and Ryan Maloney aboard – could be one to rattle the favourite Chinny Boom (10).
The stablemate is Bezique (17) with Angela Jones to ride. She had only two runs in her first prep. She has improved in the 46-week spell. A superb recent barrier trial win – she could cause a major upset.
Chinny Boom (10) won first up here a fortnight ago. He was in all sorts of trouble in the straight – had to be checked then straightened and overcome difficulties to win like a good thing. Showed some good class to get the job done first up. Trained by Clinton Taylor and Ben Thompson rides again. He has barrier 11 to contend with – however, there appears speed inside him – I expect him to get across and settle nicely three pairs back and be swooping late. This is his toughest test in his career – happy to see him win and be proven wrong.
Selections:
1 – Swiss Exile 6 – Golden Boom 10 – Chinny Boom 17 – Bezique Rough chances – (8) Lady Laguna & (4) End Assembly ________________________________________________________________________

Jimmy Orman – Ben Thompson, Andrew Mallyon and Angela Jones all have a solid book of rides – looks like Jimmy Orman may get the job done on a tough day.

WINNO V FLEMO
The battle continues with WINNO and FLEMO. We had a few winners last weekend – looks a tougher assignment here with the massive fields.
