TOKYO BLOSSOM AND THAT SWEET SCENT OF VICTORY
By Graham Potter | Tuesday, April 18, 2023
Those who followed the 3-2-1 countdown would have gone away smiling after Tokyo Blossom landed a BM58 contest over 2000m at Warwick on April 18.
The Tony and Maddysen Sears trained filly had finished third in her second last start and second in her last start prior coming into this assignment at Warwick and that positive build-up was enough to see her start as the $2.80 favourite here.
Nozi Tomizawa wasted no time in slotting Tokyo Blossom into a perfect position in the early part, sitting fourth on the rail, just 3.50 lengths off the lead.
Tokyo Blossom closed that gap up quickly in the approach to the home turn to slip up into third place, before switching out across the heels of the two runners ahead of him to corner right alongside them, three wide, but clearly going the best of that trio.
There was no hanging about now as Tomizawa pushed Tokyo Blossom to the head of affairs on straightening ... but the race still had to be won as the $5.50 chance Idling By, who had tracked Tokyo Blossom into the clear, emerged out of the pack as a serious danger.
Tokyo Blossom had to stay strong to hold her advantage, but she always held a margin ... albeit a diminishing one ... over her rival which allowed her to get the result with 0.30 lengths to spare.
This was the lightly raced Tokyo Blossom’s second career win from nine starts.
