WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, AUGUST 19, 2023

By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 18, 2023

DOOMBEN this week – nine races with the track is rated ‘soft’ and the rail is out 0.5 metres for the entire circuit. I expect the good weather in the lead up to the races should ensure we get into the GOOD range.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

This is a tough way to start off the program.

Gollan Racing is well represented with three runners Muschialli (5), Immoral (6) and Miss Tambo (16) they all have genuine claims to win the race.

Apophia (9) is trained by Lindsay Gough and will be ridden by Michael Murphy. This gelding is looking for a hat trick of wins after posting consecutive wins at Sunshine Coast at Sunday meetings. A step up in class but he does look progressive.

Selections:

9 – Apophis
6 – Immoral
5 – Muschialli
10 – Baiyka
Rough chance – (16) Miss Tambo

Race 2

A BM75 over 1350 metres.

The Tony Trio here in this race look well placed. I am talking about the Gollan Racing three – Ayahuasca (3), Star Of Chaos (6) and Drammatica (7).

The Clinton Taylor trained mare Princess Tenko drew wide last time and was obliged to race wide. She featured in the steward’s report, however, this weekend she has drawn well, and apprentice Bailey Wheeler will claim 3 kilograms. He posted a win last Saturday in the last race and looks like he should transition well from the provincial tracks to the metropolitan tracks this season.

Selections:

1 – Princess Tenko
6 – Star Of Chaos
3 – Ayahuasca
5 – Deep Rouge
Rough chance – (7) Drammatica

Race 3

BM75 over 1350 metres.

Gone for a roughie here from the Kelly Schweida yards - Datinka (10) with Cejay Graham aboard. The stable has been on fire in recent weeks! The gelding was first up at the Sunshine Coast over 1000 metres – worked home strong – I think he will benefit from the longer distance.

Selections:

10 – Datinka
1 – Acres Away
2 – In Evidence
6 – Jack’s Boom
Rough chance – (5) Crimson Warning

Race 4

No Metro Wins race here over 1600 metres.

Not a fan of the race. However, the Mark Currie trained Heleva Deel (5) flew home over 1400 metres after a freshen up last time out at Eagle Farm. They have gone for Bailey Wheeler to ride this weekend – his 3-kilogram claim sees this mare get in nicely at the weights. She performs well at these distances and will get better when she gets to run around 2000 metres

Selections:

5 – Heleva Deel
6 – Prime Impact
13 – Rosovo
10 – Lucky Exchange
Rough chance – (8) Smytzer

Race 5

A distance race over 2000 metres.

The Tony Gollan trained Coup De Tonnerre (3) is now third up and looks ready to fire. Jimmy Orman will ride.

These two have been in red hot form in recent weeks – keep following this combination – they are lethal!

Selections:

3 – Coup De Tonnerre
1 – Galifianakis
4 – Jack Duggan
5 – Top Boy

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie – open field here over 1200 metres at Class 3 level.

Simbu (7) is a progressive Tony Gollan runner. Looked to not handle the class rise in his last start here four weeks ago – may pay to forgive that effort – Jimmy Orman will ride.

Rainbow Connection (6), trained by Matthew Dunn, resumed last start over 1000 metres and got too far back on a track that favoured speed runners. He has a poor second up record – maybe a risk at the short odds The blinkers go on here – Damien Thornton retains the ride..

Bubba’s Bay (10) was a solid winner in her last start victory at Eagle Farm over 1200 metres. She trained by Kris Lees and Andrew Mallyon will ride. She has drawn poorly in barrier 15 – she probably will have to go back and be ridden for luck. But, in saying that, there appears to be not much speed drawn inside her – she may be able to jump cleanly to take up the running and get the job done again!

Selections:

10 – Bubba’s Bay
6 –Rainbow Connection
7 – Simbu
14 – Thelwell
Rough chance – (13) Lady Wardell & (16) Tintookie

Race 7

The first leg of the treble – BM85 over 1110 metres.

All That Pizzazz (6) resumes here for Gollan Racing with Ben Thompson aboard. A solid recent trial and a nice barrier draw – he looks well placed.

The stable mate is Situation Room (5) with Angela Jones riding. He is a speedy conveyance who jumps and runs. He has drawn barrier 14 – this will be a stumbling block and he is up against some opposition that like to lead as well. All this means that he will probably be taken on early for the lead and may fade late.

Zuma California (8) resumes after a 4 month freshen up – keep safe with the low weight after they claim for apprentice Bailey Wheeler – this gelding always races well fresh.

Robert Heathcote has Hatchet (10) going around. Comes back in the distance here. However, with the abundance of speed in the race he will be the one storming home late – he has a tremendous finishing burst – Jimmy Orman will be waving the persuader late to help get the job done!

Selections:

6 – All That Pizzazz
10 – Hatchet
8 – Zuma California
5 – Situation Room
Rough chance – (1) Orbisyn

Race 8

A race over the 1350 metres – Open class.

I think that the Chris Meagher runner Arentee (8) just performs better at Doomben. He is down in the weights – sure he is up in class but has drawn well and Damien Thornton will ride. He has been well supported in the early markets. The blinkers go on here for the first time – a massive bonus for mine!

Lasting Kiss (13) was ok last time out finishing off the race well without much luck in the straight at Eagle Farm over 1400 metres. She likes the Doomben track and gets in on the minimum with Angela Jones to ride for the Stephen Lee stables who have a recent blue patch of form training winners in the northern NSW areas and in the QLD metro areas.

Palladas (11) keeps on going around and running places. He is drawn wide in barrier 12 – Ben Thompson will ride.

Sir Warwick (16), trained by Jake Capewell, just thrives at Doomben. Just forget he went around last start at Eagle Farm – drew wide, went forward and tired. Barrier 8 here – no weight – Samantha Collett to ride – a huge each way chance at odds to cause an upset – around the $14.

Selections:

8 – Arentee
13 – Lasting Kiss
16– Sir Warwick
11 – Palladas
Rough chances – (2) Bonaparte & (1) Irish Songs

Race 9

Well, it is the last race! We can all race home after this and watch the Matildas hopefully beat the Sweden team in the female World Cup.

Our Magnus (10) is second up here. Trained by Corey & Kylie Geran, they have kept it in the family with Gary Geran to ride. Looks ideally placed over the longer trip and should prove hard to hold out.

Sha Of Gomer (18) is second up here for the Chris Waller stable. Has had a win and a placing on the track and Mark Du Plessis seems to post a weekly winner of late. Will settle midfield and race home late.

I Am Lethal (9) is second up for the Chris Munce yard and has the nose roll going on this weekend. Kyle Wilson Taylor is aboard. I thought his first up effort was good enough to suggest he may be difficult to beat here.

Subterranean (13) and Uncle Russ (11) are good roughies.

Selections:

10 – Our Magnus
18 – Sha Of Gomer
9 – I Am Lethal
13 – Subterranean
Rough chances – (11) Uncle Russ

WINNO V FLEMO

The battle continues with WINNO and FLEMO. He has been up north in recent weeks calling the Carnival in Far North Queensland - and doing an amazing job! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
