BERRY EDGES HIS WAY BACK TO A RACE RIDING RETURN
By Graham Potter | Monday, August 21, 2023
Jockey Tommy Berry is almost back in business as he approaches the end of his seven-month disqualification period.
The star hoop is free to ride in barrier trials from next week and can be expected to be in full stride soon ... but, before that, he has been granted special dispensation by Racing NSW to allow him to ride the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Mazu, a top contender for The Everest, in a barrier trail at Rosehill on Tuesday.
Berry was originally banned for twelve months over ‘improper dealings with a punter’, but had that penalty reduced on appeal and is now expected to return to race riding on September 24.
Mazu is one of six runners in the second barrier trial on the day where he will rub shoulders with the Chris Waller trained duo, Nature Strip and Espiona ... his stable companions King Of Sparta and King’s Gambit ... as well as the Bjorn Baker trained Overpass.
Mazu is currently one of four horses, along with Think About It, Giga Kick and I Wish I Win, who have already secured a spot in the twelve-horse field, which is selected by twelve slot-holders, for the $20 million The Everest which will be contested at Randwick on October 14.
