MONTANA LADY GRINDS OUT A THIRD CAREER WIN
By Graham Potter | Saturday, August 19, 2023
August 19 was a relatively quiet Saturday for the Tony and Maddysen Sears training partnership who only had two runners on the day, but their scoreboard seldom has a day off and once again the stable added to their winning tally when Montana Lady claimed the third win of her career when taking out a Ratings Band 0-62 Handicap over 1000m at Toowoomba.
Coming in on the third line of betting at $4.80 in a six-horse field, Montana Lady was chased out of the gates early by Anthony Allen before settling in fourth place, a little under four lengths off the leader for the first half of the race.
Montana Lady went back to second last but was now just three lengths off the speed as the field negotiated the sweep to the home turn and she still had those three lengths to make up when the field turned for home with Montana Lady cornering three wide.
It seemed like a long chase home as Allen tried to rev up Montana Lady and while she kept coming it there was a stage where looked like she might run out of time.
Two lengths back with 200m left to run ... and still a length adrift coming through the 100m ... the momentum was there, but Montana Lady still had to sustain her run over the concluding stages and she stuck to her task gamely to ease to the head of affairs when it mattered most to score a finely judged victory by 0.30 lengths from Thunder Moon ($5.50), who had hit the front looking the likely winner halfway down the home straight.
That’s three wins from sixteen starts now for the four-year-old daughter of Red Dazzler.
