WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, AUGUST 26, 2023
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 24, 2023
DOOMBEN this week - nine races – a track rated ‘soft’- the rail is out 4 metres for the entire circuit. I expect the warm weather in the lead up to the races should ensure we get into the GOOD range.
I am in Cairns for the Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup 2023 – so it will be brief this week!
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
Class 3 over 1050 metres.
Gollan Racing is well represented with three runners Devastating (1), Blue Spinel (7) and Liquor (12). The premier trainer, jockey and apprentice from last season all combine here on two of those, runners, both last start winners. Devastating (1) won last time out at Eagle Farm – Jimmy Orman stays aboard. Blue Spinel (7) won at Eagle Farm as well – Angela Jones rides again.
Hard To Say (2) resumed at Rosehill with a very good win – trained by Jason Deamer this Dynamic Syndicate owned gelding will have Ashley Morgan riding.
Selections:
1 – Devastating 2 – Hard To Say 7 – Blue Spinel 5 – Nashira Rough chance – (11) Compassionate
Race 2
A BM90 over 2000 metres. Only a small field to face the starter. Chris Waller has three runners in the field.
Selections:
3 – Shameless Miss 5 – Wairere Falls 6 – Mubariz 7 – Nikau Spur
Race 3
BM70 over 1350 metres.
Mark Currie trains Gaius (4) and Telephone Booth (6) – hold the phone!
Look, Gaius (4) I think is a different horse at Doomben – got lost on the Eagle Farm track last time out. Comes back in distance and to a track where he thrives. Jake Molloy will claim three kilograms and that gets him in nicely. Jake can get him past the post first – I think that may be his first Saturday winner if he can get him home.
The stable mate is Telephone Booth (6) with Jimmy Orman aboard. Resumes here and always sprints well fresh.
Argyle Pink (8) resumes here for Gollan Racing with Cejay Graham to ride. Has won a recent barrier trail – keep safe.
Selections:
4 – Gaius 8 – Argyle Pink 16 – Smokin Toff 6 – Telephone Booth
Race 4
Class 3 race over the mile.
Tough race – no real interest.
I would go for a roughie Ella Te Ama (13) trained by Kris Lees Racing and with Andrew Mallyon aboard. Has had a four week freshen up since a nice effort at Eagle Farm over 1815 metres. I think back to the mile she will be difficult to beat.
Selections:
13 – Ella Te Ama 1 – Ashgrove 4 – Red Top 2 – Bettcha The Crown Rough chance – (10) Northern Decree & (17) Hector De Maris
Race 5
Class 6 over 1350 metres
Release The Beans (5) was on the quick back up last start – a week between runs and seemed to be flat. With a four week freshen up look for this Robert Heathcote runner to perform well on a track that he loves – Damien Thornton will ride.
Michael Murphy combines with Lindsay Gough with Viminele (12) who comes off a win last time out at Eagle Farm. He is down in the weights and should feature in the finish.
Selections:
5 – Release The Beans 12 – Viminele 3 – Kinloch 1 – Briars Kingdom
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie – open field here over 1200m.
Coco Rox (10) seemed to have a forgettablel run last time out at Eagle Farm – seemed to surge forward and race too hard. Matthew Dunn has elected to put on the blinkers this weekend – Ben Thompson is back aboard as well after winning on the mare at Grafton two starts ago – super each way odds as well - $16.
Bubba’s Bay (16), trained by Kris Lees Racing, has been scratched recently. Should take her place in the field – Andrew Mallyon will ride.
Vodka Martini (7) is looking for a hat trick of wins. Kelly Schweida trains and Cejay Graham who rode another double last weekend is riding the gelding again.
Birriecart (2) is a very smart sprinter resuming here for the O’Dea & Hoysted team – Justin Huxtable will ride.
Selections:
10 – Coco Rox 16 – Bubba’s Bay 7 – Vodka Martini 2 – Birriecart Rough chance – (3) Shamaton
Race 7
The first leg of the treble – a QTIS three-year-old plate over 1200 metres.
The Player (6) was super first up from the Chris Munce yards. Kyle Wilson-Taylor will ride again. Should be hard to hold out.
Deep Respect (5), trained by Kelly Schweida, won on debut at a midweek meeting. Jimmy Orman stays aboard – has been well supported since the markets have opened.
Shot Of Whiskey (4) and Spin Doctor (1) are trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted – both are not without claims in this race.
Selections:
6 – The Player 5 – Deep Respect 4 – Shot Of Whiskey
1 – Spin Doctor
Race 8
A race over the 1200 metres – Open class.
Contemptuous (2, trained by O’Dea and Hoysted Racing, has had a four week freshen up. Jaden Lloyd will ride – this runner seems to run well after a break.
Acrobatic (12) is trained by Kelly Schweida and resumes here – a terrible trial; however, he can race well fresh, and he does love the Doomben track – Kyle Wilson Taylor.
Snowzone (1) is from the Kris Lees Racing yards and comes off a win at Sunshine Coast. Has had a freshen up and despite the huge weight will be competitive.
Spaceboy (8) is from the Gary Portelli yards in Sydney – seemed to get lost last start at Eagle Farm. Cejay Graham will ride, and her claim will be handy.
Selections:
12 – Acrobatic 8 – Spaceboy 2 – Contemptuous 1 – Snowzone
Race 9
The Mark Currie trained Heleva Deel (15) flashed home over 1400 metres – the extra distance will suit. Taylor Marshall will ride.
Canadian Dancer (8) is trained by O’Dea and Hoysted. Comes off a last start win at Eagle Farm over 1400 metres. Ben Thompson will ride – he did finish the race off strongly.
Hokahey (9) is trained Jack Bruce and Angela Jones will ride – worked home nicely over 1500 metres at Eagle Farm – possibly will enjoy the Doomben track more.
It is a tough way to end for punters – let’s hope Currie gets the Chocolates!
Selections:
15 – Heleva Deel 8 – Canadian Dancer 9 – Hokahey 6 – Shopping Espirit Rough chances – (2) Point Counterpoint _______________________________________
Jockeys Challenge
The in-form Cejay Graham, Andrew Mallyon, Jimmy Orman and Kyle Wilson Taylor all have a solid book of rides – looks like a battle between Jimmy and Kyle.
