WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, SEPTEMBER 2, 2023
By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 1, 2023
EAGLE FARM this week for a Tattersall’s Racing Club meeting. Nine races. The track rated ‘Good’. The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit. There are some afternoon storms forecast – hopefully it will not have any effect on the track.
Time to look at the program.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
BM70 over 1500 metres.
Tough race to start us off. I like the Stuart Kendrick runner – Capital Cee (5) with Bailey Wheeler to ride. The gelding is third up from a spell here and I think he has been crying out for this distance and should get every chance in this small field to break his maiden status.
All Valour (2) is trained by Desleigh Forster and resumed with a solid win at Beaudesert when he led all the way. The time was good, and he could run another bold race on the week back up. I see that Kirk Matheson will ride him again here – I hope his partner Cejay Graham can walk him around the Eagle Farm track to find the fastest way home!
Selections:
5 – Capital Cee 2 – All Valour 6 – Totspur 4 – Planned Encounter
Race 2
Class 6 over 1200 metres – another small field.
I thought that you are supposed to tip from top to bottom of the field as they appear in the race books. Well not here let us go from the bottom to the top in order!
Chris Waller Racing and Jimmy Orman combine with Kir Royale (8) who has been racing consistently in Sydney. Looks nicely placed here and the nose roll comes off – maybe a win for her first run in QLD.
Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted have two genuine chances in Jayanthi (7) and Fleetwood Maca (6). Jayanthi (7) won last time out at Doomben at $12 – was a solid win in Class 3 grade – steps up here in grade. Ben Thompson retains the ride.
Fleetwood Maca (6) is the stable mate with Jayden Lloyd to ride. Drops back in distance from 1400 metres to 1200 metres. I am not too certain he thrives at this track. The small field should enable him to sit off the speed and have a final crack at them late. Selections:
8 – Kir Royale 7 – Jayanthi 6 – Fleetwood Maca 5 – Baristasista
Race 3
No Metro Win over 1800 metres.
Mark Currie trains Heleva Deel (7) who flashed home over 1400 metres last time – the extra distance will suit. Bailey Wheeler will ride. Second up here – the distance will be no trouble – just hope he has trained on since his last start slashing run.
Whodat (8) is trained by Matthew Dunn. Is third up here and does like this distance. Damien Thorton will ride.
Lucky Exchange (4) is trained by Kelly Schweida with Jimmy Orman riding. The gelding is now into his fourth run this prep – he must be close to getting in the money.
Selections:
7 – Heleva Deel 8 – Whodat 4 – Lucky Exchange 10 – Duke Of Gordon
Race 4
BM78 over 2200 metres. These races are always a lottery!
Can Mark Currie and Bailey Wheeler combine with a race-to-race winner? They will pair up with Top Boy (6) who had a torrid run last time out Doomben – I think he possibly could have won. He is third up here for the new stable – I think I will gamble on him getting a great run and, with the weight off his back for Bailey, he should be right in the race.
Chris Waller trains Chernak (2) and Mark Du Plessis combines with this runner again here after they won at Doomben three weeks ago – should be right in this race.
Cash Me (4) is trained by Jack Bruce and Cejay Graham will ride him again after he won at Doomben over 2000 metres – the extra distance may be a problem.
Selections:
2 – Chernak 6 – Top Boy 4 – Cash Me 5 – Coup De Tonnerre
Race 5
The three-year-olds face the starter over 1000 metres.
Mintos Doro (5) was defeated last time out by Miss Coota (1). Maybe with the weight differential the Les Kelly trained filly Mintos Doro (5) and Sean Cormack may post a win.
Chris Munce’s good filly Miss Coota (1) won first up with Justin Huxtable riding. With the 60 kilograms allocated here the stable has elected to take 3 kilograms off her by booking Bailey Wheeler. She is undefeated at Eagle Farm – that may keep her in contention here.
Oceans Of Energy (2) resumes here for Matthew Dunn Racing – Andrew Mallyon will ride. She had an ordinary trial recently at Ballina. She has won first up and could be one to cause an upset here.
Selections:
5 – Mintos Doro 1 – Miss Coota 2 – Oceans Of Energy 9 – Instagood
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie – open field here over 1000 at No Metro Win grade.
Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted have Nashira (11) in the race with Ben Thompson aboard. Second up here – just has drawn better than many of his opposition.
Hold On Honey (4) went down in the shadows of the post when resuming here four weeks ago – will strip fitter, however, barrier 19 may be a drama for jockey Cejay Graham. The gelding has the speed to get across and take up the running. Just hope he doesn’t get pressured early.
Le Melody (5) is trained by Cody Morgan and has a heap of gear changes after running third to Vodka Martini (who won last weekend) three weeks ago. Andrew Mallyon will ride.
Selections:
11 – Nashira 5 – Le Melody 4 – Hold On Honey 9 – Groomed
Race 7
The first leg of the treble – a Class 6 over 1200 metres.
Gollan Racing has a mortgage on the race for mine. Probably could train the trifecta!
I like the longer priced of all the runners – Mass Destruction (3) – hopefully he can cause some havoc and destroy this very small field. I think he is best served when he can settle and storm home late. He gets the chance to sit off them and fly home late with only a small field here – look for Jimmy Orman to pull him to the outside and put a couple across his backside and get him home! Super odds as well at $9.
Zarastro (10) is the stable mate with Angela Jones to ride. He was heavily supported here in his last start win as an odds-on favourite – he led all the way on that occasion and ran them into the ground – up in grade here, but down in weights – he could win again – just think his price is too short for mine.
All The Pizzazz (2) is the third of the stable representatives – Ben Thompson will ride. He has an impressive second up record with two wins out of three starts. He will be right in this race.
Ned’s Gully (1) was impressive with a last start win here at this track and distance – Jake Molloy will ride.
Selections:
3 – Mass Destruction 10 – Zarastro 2 – All That Pizzazz 1 – Ned’s Gully
Race 8
A race over the 1400 metres – The Tattersall’s Members Cup.
Cepheus (1) returns to the track after a brief freshen up and that amazing win in the South Grafton Cup that automatically got him an entry into the Big Dance to be run at Randwick – with prize money of $3 million on offer. Jimmy Orman will ride the Matthew Dunn trained gelding. Despite the 60 kilograms I think he looks well placed – after all he has won at Group 2 level. I think he picks himself here if there is a genuine tempo in the race.
Williamsburg (7) is an interesting runner from the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou yards. He resumes here after two nice barrier trials. He normally is better second or third up – however, when you look at the constant support in the markets firming from $4 to $3.30 – where there is smoke there is fire – but I am going to hose it down and say he cannot win first up – Ryan Maloney will ride.
Hot Spring Gold (11) from the Munce Racing yards loves the track and was a surprise but solid winner at this track three weeks ago. Kyle Wilson-Taylor will ride. He seems to post back-to-back wins once he gets into the winner’s stalls – may pay to keep this one safe at $10.
Shaquero (12) could maybe fill a place with his recent form.
Selections:
1 – Cepheus 7 - Williamsburg 11 – Hot Spring Gold 12 – Shaquero Rough chance (3) Tumbler Ridge
Race 9
A massive field over 1400 metres at BM78 level.
I will stay with the Corey & Kylie Geran trained Our Magnus (6) – it did cost me a massive parlay result last time when he was narrowly defeated. They have booked Jimmy Orman for the ride – third up – looks well placed.
Titanium (7) could be the kryptonite for Our Magnus (6). This gelding is trained by Barry Lockwood and has a solid record on this track – Jaden Lloyd will ride.
Star Of Chaos (10) was solidly supported late when she won last time out at Doomben. Angela Jones will ride the mare here. She goes up in grade and may need some luck from barrier 12, however, the last win was impressive – she could go on with it here.
Sha Of Gomer (13), from the Chris Waller Racing team, was heavily supported last time and to be fair was disappointing. Mark Du Plessis retains the ride. Third up this weekend – a win would not surprise me.
Selections:
6 – Our Magnus 7 – Titanium 10 – Star Of Chaos 13 – Sha Of Gomer Rough chances – (12) Sea Ripple _____________________________________________________________________
